Always amazed by early Michalik pics. Had a great structure. No face bloat. Long limbs...wide shoulders...classic bodybuilding shape. Seems his body went through a ton of fucked up looks in later years...kinda like Gaspari. Looking at these early pics...he looks like he couldve become one of the best. But he never did.
-
Those are pretty much perfect proportions. Nothing that really can be improved. I think what I really like about the earlier looks are that they just look healthy. The physique guys today look like veiny dehydrated corpses with a ton of muscle....a shitty super ripped unhealthy look.

very good point
what would you say is his bodyfat there?
that's a nice look actually, lean and shapely but not too ripped and dry
-
chest too small.
up the dosage!!
-
He didn't gain much after that shot, and he took more drugs than anyone at that time...
-
That's not Howard

Dint he say he wanted to die onstage right after winning the NOC?
Also he had a car smash and tore his sciatic nerve, fuck me that must have been agony...
-
Nope. Over-rated, if anything. Did the psycho thingy nicely, tho.
-
That guy was a nut case.
-
BETHERE, Yea, I sorta recall when that accident occurred. I believe that it was shortly after he beat Peter Grymkowski in one of the major contests which we all hoped Pete would win.

he never won the night of champions

he never won the night of champions
I didnt say he did.
I said that was his fantasy, winning the show then dying.
He also almost drowned John Defendis
John asked him to train him, he took John down to the beach and waded out waist height and then held John under the water, when he finally let him up he said "Come back and see me when you want to train as hard as you wanted that one last breath of air."

he should have picked a better show
-
He got run over by a garbage truck, well his car did and he happen to be in it. So maybe his lack of improvement in later years had something to do with it. For as much drugs as he claimed to take he either had a lot of fake shit or his genetics sucked.
-
Very similar legs to that Arnold guy.

Maybe his training system was shit. I've heard on many occasions that he was a first class asshole. I remember some kid on Ironage used to train with him. The routines he talked about were completely Insane. Kid kept posting pics to show his development but he looked more and more like shit. Finally the kid looked like total garbage then Minchalik scammed him out of money in a business deal. The kid completely idolized Minchalik and He just took advantage of it and ruined the kid physically and financially.
-
Yeah he probably could have been at least "somebody" if you know who hadn't come along...
-
BETHERE, Interesting drowning story!
I've never heard that one but I have heard even stranger bodybuilding stories while sitting around with some pros and a pound and a half of marijuana going up in smoke.
I'd do my best to tell them someday, but I'd only wake up and find myself dead the following morning!
And, "YES! I have been told that!!"
"WARNED" may be more appropriate.
-
Supposedly had a 27 inch waist in 1972 at the America.
-
Yeah he probably could have been at least "somebody" if you know who hadn't come along...
That's not really the point.
-
Looking pretty fucking impressive here. Nobody looks like this on a beach these days. Puts all current pros to shame for sheer impressive bodybuilder physique.
-
This training shot of Steve always brings me back to the 80's...training at John Kempers Diamond Gym in Jersey, Bob Bonhams Strong and Shapely and Tom Minichellos Mid City gym in NYC. The days when the gyms had a sokid bunch of guys and gals who trained fucking hard as shit. Trained long...hit bodyparts twice a week. Trained in thermals and froze in the gym in the winter. Basic cycles and hard bland dieting. No excuses. This pic says it all.
-
He seems like a Ecto-Meso, very wide, nice shape but a bit lanky.
To be honest I always wondered what was all fuss about the guy.
Long arms and legs are hard to fill and it's very evident in his pics.
I'm sure he was very impressive in person with his ultra wide shoulders, miniscule waist and long muscular yet a bit slender looking limbs.

Seventies builders looked the best. Great photography back then too
Todays bodybuilding is a complete nightmare

That guy was a nut case.
Class act
Blew his brains out while his children were in the next room. One of the biggest mental cases of them all
But early in his career he had a solid physique that still looks awesome now 45 years later

he was a pure skinny boy. Here he is after his accident in the 70's.

Yeah, physique notwithstanding the guy was a c0ck... After several hours of him terrorising them by shouting and waving the gun around, he realised that 10 years of bodyweight-only training along with tuna and ramen 6 times a day just wasn't the sort of lifesyle he was after...
And it's weird, because trying to find an article actually outlining his demise wasn't easy - looks like all the muscle-mags left it pretty vague for some reason....?
-
He did a tour in Vietnam maybe he had some demons.
-

If that's the case, Good Riddance!
If you can't make sacrifices for your children, don't bring them into this world. And if you do bring them into this world, make sure you leave them in a better place from where you started. That's the way I see it.
This idiot emotionally crippled his children for the rest of their lives.

Still wider than Heath.

A crazy ending to a crazy man. I would have loved to see Mentzer and Michalik argue over training systems.
-
I don't know if anyone put this up but this is his story of using steroids. http://www.thestacksreader.com/the-power-and-the-gory/
-
Michalik looked tremendous for a natty.

I once asked Bev Francis About Steve and she said he was a total asshole!

did you hit it ? your cave or hers ?

I saw him at a gym in New York. I approached him and we chatted. He took me through a few arm exercises. Seemed like a nice guy. He was still VERY wide.

His demeanor was good or bad depending on the dose.

I remember that!
The kid really did idolize Steve. He posted his routines and, while I can't remember the specifics, they seemed vaguely similar to Mishko's giant set crap with baby weights and mega-volume.
The kid wasn't a bad bodybuilder, but it was obvious he was slowly regressing at best. He certainly wasn't improving.
He did a show and placed well, but an even thinner, more ripped guy won. In the video taken from the finals, after the latter won, you could hear Steve screaming, "The most muscular 'stick.' They gave it to the most muscular stick!"
I knew then that he was a classless clod and royal asshole.
His client eventually grew frustrated with Steve's bullshit training, ditched it and did much better on his own.

I believe it. He probably would have admitted being one.

That kids training was horrific.....I beat him at the New Englands.

Need pics.

I don't doubt it.
Do you remember what Michalik had him doing, Tim?
Like I said, I vaguely recall the kid talking about mega giant sets. I liked a lot of the blokes at Ironage, but their "nothing negative!" policy resulted in tons of ass-kissing, often to the detriment of playing pretend lest you be censured. In a sense, it was the anti-Getbig of the day...over there, everything and everybody were gum drops and strawberry shortcake; here, it was utter chaos, what with the likes of Dave Mirza and the "squad" stinking up the joint with juvenile humour, thread after thread.
We still have some of that but now it IS in good fun, and the posters who typically deserve lampooning are rightly targeted (*cough*Wankins*cough*).
Eh, I digress. Semper Fi, carry on.

Great summation!! :D
All I remember is that he was using baby weight going from exercise to exercise with horrendous form.

It's insane how narrow he is there vs. when he's bulked up. Like his clavicles themselves gained 2 inches on each side when on da juice. Just bizarre.
I think Michalik's bullshit training system was "Intensity or Insanity" and was supposedly something like 100 sets for a muscle group early in the week, 75 sets for it in the middle of the week, and 50 sets for it at the end of the week. Just total horse shit he pulled out of his ass. I even remember reading somewhere he'd "rope off a portion of the gym" for him and his training partner and tell the guy "Welcome to Hell". Just cringeworthy shit. This is inspiring me to go start a new thread.

Someone said the pen that was at the front desk to sign members up was made out of a syringe.
Guy sounded like a total asshole. But in retrospect he may have suffered a brain injury during his accident. Because it seems like he was more reasonable prior to the accident.
But he definitely competed after the accident he just didn't do very well.

That's a really good point.

I'm glad he pronounced his name in that video as "Mihalik." I've heard his name pronounced several different ways so now I know.

I remember seeing Steve Michalik at the George Snyder Best in the World Show in suburban philly in around 77or 78. He was walking with a cane and I remember he was huge but in baggy clothes. It was also the first and only time I saw Arnold, he was sitting at a table signing autographs for a dollar. I'd never heard of anyone charging for an autograph at the time. I remember meeting Robby and Bill Grant who were both cool with the fans. Other posters have mentioned on this thread the former Iron age site, i used to post there under the same name as here. I quit the site after getting into a keyboard argument over the so called Colorado Experiment...I couldn't believe people actually bought into that bullshit marketing ploy. But I guess Art Jones had the last laugh as it helped him sell alot of nautilus equipment

I agree with you about the Colorado experiment. I suspect steroids and extra conventional workouts were the reason. If you remember Arthur Jones was part of that experiment too but dropped out claiming illness. I suspect he wasn't advancing fast enough to make people impressed with the machines.

He had Mike and Ray filming Boyer going through the workouts. Boyer showed up clean. Of course he was in shape but man he was skinny. He was about as clean as a bodybuilder can be. The videos were awkward. Mike following Boyer around, with a clip board, making small talk between sets. They only made it through 3 or 4 workouts before ditching the whole idea of filming Boyers progress.
I mean this was supposed to be the proof. On film. But of course it didn't workout (no pun intended) Boyer made no progress at all. What did Casey supposedly do in Colorado? 6 workouts?
All those people he had at Nautilus, Sergio, Casey, Boyer Coe, Mike and Ray. And not once could they repeat the results of the famous experiment. Just excuse after excuse. FFS he was paying them to workout and eat! The worlds best bodybuilders and nada.

That is how you prove your "scientific" hypertrophy theory. Just delete the results that don't match your expected results.
