Sad story with Mike. You just know how much he regretted taking bodybuilding to the extreme once he turned about 40 or so. From my experience with people being given major medical diagnoses, you can generally get one decade from there - which is roughly what Mike got. Again, it's sad. On the flip side, Mike may never have made 65, even if he lived a life that a monk would consider aesthetic...err...I'm thinking of another word, but the spelling escapes me. Esthaic? I can't remember. Basically it means harmonious or something.
I believe Mike's father passed away in 2003, somewhere between the ages of 68 and 73.
Also, was it Dorian who said that there was nothing between Mike's armpits and knees? True - but only while comparing Mike to a person like Dorian!

Ascetic is the word you're looking for. And I'm French. And you're American. WTF?

He had decent quads.

Heh. Thank you, sir!
I speak French to - it is Canada's second official language and I took French immersion in elementary school. :)

His eyes were big but they certainly lacked separation especially in the rear shots. Actually anything other than the front double bicep they latch separation

I'm quite sure it was Cormier who said that about Mike. At the time, at Gold's, the two were regularly inches from fisticuffs.

In alot of ways Mike epitomized the fun part of the bodybuilding lifestyle, ie you can see from his demeanour, posing, interviews that he seemed to really soak it in, he also was one of the first of the top pros of the 90's to show the downside of the whole thing
I don't feel his bodyparts were really "weak" as much as his stronger ones(delts, arms, abs, calves) just overshadowed the other ones
The guy had a good back, chest and legs, they were just overshadowed IMO

One of Mike's best contests was the 1992 IFBB Pro Ironman. He has gigantic. It was roughly 8 months after he turned pro at the 1991 USA. I believe that he placed 5th
-
MIKE had a decent contest history'placing'wise considering not being the genetically'blessed'look/shape wise like some 90's guys flex,cormier,milos,ray,labrada,ect...he had his 'look',,he was a freak hardness/condition wise at his usa win esp considering he was 228 peeled 5'10,,

He must have felt on top of the world...
To be honest, I am somewhat an addict of the local strongman circuit. It's only local strongest man contests, yet I have an increasing penchant to compete and win my weight class. I made a decision to just do it for fun and stay at 170 though. That said, I fully understand why higher level. competitors love what they do...but at what. cost?

OK, now I've got that off my chest, I have 1 (and maybe a half) Matarazzo memories...
1. THAT Musclemag cover. Like the Denis Newman edition, the shoulder thickness just blew my mind...
2. I seem to partially remember a UK tour in the mid '90s (date anyone? It was the drug years after all.....) where Mike was supposed to come to my hometown and I got (wrongfully) arrested so couldn't attend... or did I confuse this with another US Pro? (did Vince Taylor tour the UK..?)
-
Also, what was that story about Mike living with Flex, and them having a flasher/peeping tom at their apartment LOL

Yeah, he looks awesome there... crazy.

Mike was my favourite bber for years to come.
What really amazes me is he seemed best in 1991 MR. USA
Even his best magazine covers are from 1991...
He suppossedly went from 228 to 248 but didn't get better.
He seemed to have amazing shoulders (anyone recall his MegaMass Posters?!)
To me he had amazing delts, forearms and abs next to his obvious showcase muscles...
His lack of lat spread-High lats-lack of back seperation, short thighs, mostly mediocre pecs obviously hurt him.
Lastly, I was shocked when I discovered how pitiful his delts looked next to Levrone and Coleman in 1997 NOC
If you can find some pics from that contest you will see what I mean, as much as I like big Mike so much, he was a very distant third behind these fellas.

Another cool shot.
