First Customers Get Tesla Model 3 Electric Cars
July 29, 2017
Sonari Glinton
While more than 500,000 people have put down a deposit for the privilege of owning Tesla's new Model 3, according to the company, 30 employees were the lucky few to receive their vehicles first.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk took the stage at a companywide event in Fremont, Calif., on Friday night to handover the vehicles, just a few of the approximately half-million to put down $1,000 to eventually own an affordable long-range all-electric car.

This is actually a big step for electric cars. The Model S and X were never really affordable for the average consumer.

New Tesla Model 3 Finally Detailed, Offers Up To 310 Miles Of Range
By Michael Karkafiris
Jul 29, 2017
Model 3 to come in two versions: the standard $35k derivative and the so-called Long Range model that starts from $44k. All prices are before incentives.
Let’s dive in in the specs then, shall we? The standard Model 3 will offer an EPA-estimated 220 miles of driving range (354km), 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds and a top speed of 130mph. Opt for the Long Range model and you’ll get 310 miles of range (498km), 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds and a 140mph top speed.
The two versions also have differences in their charging rates; standard models will gain 130 miles of range per 30 minutes of charging at Tesla’s Supercharger, with the Long Range gaining 170 miles for the same amount of time. The rates become 30 miles per hour from a 240V household outlet at 32A for the standard and 37 miles per hour for the Long Range.

Biggest news imo was that they now have over 500,000 reservations, representing 22 billion usd in sales

I found the 310 mile range, 5.1 second zero the sixty, and 170 miles after 30 minutes charge to be equally impressive. Those specs justify the 500,000 reservations. This car will really be a scaled down Model S without losing much of the capability and customers will be please with what they get.

Assuming a 20% negative margin, they will only lose $4bn on that.

I believe the first ones go to employees.

Both S en X have a higher profit margin than Porsche's best
Very few people will order a base Model E. With options it will be profitable, as the cost per kWh drops every year
-
Model 3 also is larger than a 3 series, Model Y will sell even better as crossovers are more popular than sedans

Those first models are probably given to employees to test and provide feedback before delivering final cars to consumers. Still seems like a good car for the base price (~$35k) if one doesn't care about the auto pilot and other premium features.

The Chevrolet Bolt with 238 miles of range is $36K. :-\
This is the Model 3's competition.
