Woman sentenced to 15 months in texting suicide case

Michelle Carter, whose own words helped seal her involuntary manslaughter conviction in the suicide of her teenage boyfriend, was sentenced to 15 months in a Massachusetts jail Thursday -- but will remain free pending appeals.
"This court must and has balanced between rehabilitation, the promise that rehabilitation would work and a punishment for the actions that have occurred," said Bristol County Juvenile Court Judge Lawrence Moniz, emphasizing rehabilitation as a primary component of juvenile justice.
Hundreds of Carter's text messages presented as evidence over six days of testimony in June convinced Moniz of her guilt in a criminal case that hinged largely on intimate cellphone exchanges between Carter and 18-year-old Conrad Roy III. Moniz sentenced Carter to a two-and-a-half-year term -- with 15 months in jail and the balance suspended plus a period of supervised probation.

Based on what I've read her involvement had a big part in him doing what he did, although of course he was already depressed, suicidal and crying for help...she was the feather that tipped the scale.
I think she deserves it just from a sadistic point of view.

That is one way of looking at it. The other is that she was just being strong for her friend and give him the strength to do what he might have expressed a desire to do, for a very long time.
When you're around someone who wants to suicide, you'll try just about every thing in the book to try to snap them out of it -but I can imagine that if you'd totally failed for a year or two, you might change gears and start siding with them on their desire.
It is slightly different and ultimately much more righteous - but If I had a relative, say, with some advanced form of terminal cancer, I'd be saying some pretty hard shit in private to them, too - that definitely could be misinterpreted as some sort of "fetish for death".
Like "Go to the bridge, throw yourself off whilst you have the chance"

Thats why the sentence was stayed. The judge agreed with the defense that this would go through a fairly lengthy appellate process. First amendments and how it applies to test etc.

When you overstate an offense you don't increase it's evil and "badness" but rather diminish the real horror of the original comparison. When I hear the world "rape" now I don't think about someone being overpowered or drugged to have sex and what a extreme violation that is. I think, "Hmm, rape. What do you mean?"

I think it is very plausible that this girl had a lot to do with this boy killing himself. How many men in history have killed themselves over a women? How many men have killed others over a woman? Hate to broach a touchy subject but didn't Radical Plato's suicide have something to do with his ex? Should we arrest a bully who caused a boy to shoot up his school? Arrest a boss for firing an employee who came back to the office and blasted away?
We're setting a new precedent here. And it's not going to stop here.
