All award shows are relatively irrelavant.
However, they basically tied last year.
I didn't watch it, but who would?

Updated: With early returns down from 2016 numbers, adjustments have it tying the previous year.
The Emmys are becoming a tougher sell for viewers. For another year, initial ratings for the TV awards were down — though the total viewership ultimately just bested the lows from 2016.
Emmys' updated haul have it averaging 11.4 million viewers for the night, up incrementally from the 2016 show. That's good news after overnight 8.2 rating among metered market households had it down another 2 percent from the previous year. That means that the final tally for the 2017 Emmys, hosted by Stephen Colbert on CBS, avoids the all-time low 11.3 million viewers that tuned in during 2016.
In the key demo of adults 18-49, the show did bottom out, slipping 10 percent from a 2.7 rating to a 2.5 rating. Overnight ratings are naturally below those of NBC's Sunday Night Football, which took a 12.6 overnight rating among households.
Emmy viewership has been dipping steadily over recent years, especially compared to the stronger awards shows such as the Golden Globes, the Academy Awards and the Grammys. The show hit new lows in 2015 and again in 2016, despite relatively strong performances in 2013 and 2014.
Sunday competition from the NFL has certainly been one source of shrinking viewers, but many point to a broadening body of winners — including lesser-watched series on cable and streaming outlets, while broadcast shows go relatively unnoticed — as one reason for smaller tune-ins. Though considering the popularity of 2016 winner Game of Thrones, that argument may not hold that much weight.
Others, including several readers who've already been riled enough to contact me via the link below, will posit that the lows are the result of the many shots fired at Donald Trump. And while that may be true to a small degree, to say that Sunday's ratings are rebuke of Colbert and others' mockery of the president would be ignoring the fact that these scores are only incrementally off from the previous two Emmys.
Someone said "Hollywood is dead". That's a crazy statement considering how much money the Hollywood Box office brings in pretty much almost every year.

Yes, they will all be out of work soon once Trumptards find out Hollywood doesn't like him.
If only they had kissed his ass I'm sure all the Trumptards would have stopped watching Sunday night football to tune in to the Emmy's

Irrelevant or not this years show and for the next EIGHT years won't be about the ones that won the awards but (as planned) a three hour Trump bashing by uninformed Hollywood shitheads that pretend like they actually give a shit about what happens to anyone. But as usual, their plan backfired and they look dumber than ever.

They were irrelevant before the election, but they solidified themselves as dangerous, unpatriotic degenerates after the election. That whole media campaign to try and convince the electoral college not to elect Trump was a direct threat to our democracy.

Notice how it gets worse as the demographic gets younger. There's no future for the industry. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch.

It may but it's not a trend yet. 2016 was a record year for the Hollywood box office.
Not saying it will or won't trend down, but it's not good if it does. It's a huge part of the US economy.
If it does trend down, then that is a bigger sign of entertainment. Not just Hollywood, but other types as well. Such as the NFL.

It's not about revenue. It's about profits. They're pumping more money into these movies for a smaller return.

But not everyone in town is crowing; last year was lopsided when it comes to profitability. The six major studios collectively pocketed $5.2 billion, down 20 percent from 2015

2015 had Star wars though... That was 2 Billion by itself.
You can't compare the years. When you have a world wide phenomenon, it matters. I would expect that the numbers by the end of the year look a lot better than we are led to believe considering how the next Star Wars movie will most likely be received.

Highs and Lows. Streaming is where it's at. How much money does Netflix or Hulu make? If we add that to the "box office", what happens? I don't think it's a lack of liking the content, it's just how it's delivered. Two different things.
Eventually movie theaters will be things of the past.

We heard the same rap from the music industry when MP3s became popular. Now the industry is dramatically smaller.
Nexflix isn't nearly enough to do to replace the decline of movie theater attendance. The reality is that the Internet has created more options for people. Hollywood doesn't have the market cornered on entertainment anymore and it never will again.

The music industry revenue has been effectively the same and stable for the past 7 years or so. Smaller from like 2000, but not in the past 7 years or so.

I believe there were some injuries, but let's say there weren't. They did destroy government property to get in.

So long-term it's a shrinking industry. You seem like the type who likes to argue for the sake of arguing:
As I said everything points to Hollywood being an industry in decline and it's not that big a part of the economy. It's consumer discretionary. Nobody needs these assholes:

The industry isn't declining. Box office is declining. How people consume content is changing. Of course no one "needs" entertainment. No one needs the NFL, or MLB, or any other forms of entertainment. Video Games... whatever. The way people consume content, especially young people is completely different than the way television is.
How much revenue is in youtube and things of that nature. I don't specifically know, but I'm sure there's a connection between the rise of streaming services, including youtube, and the drop of television ratings.
Even news channels are feeling that pressure. The way people consume content is changing. It will continue to change, but there will always be people who generate content and get paid for it in a capacity.
Not arguing to argue, my statements are simply related to the reality that saying "Hollywood" is falling, isn't really looking at the bigger picture of content generation as a whole.

I'll use myself as an example...
I used to watch at least as much television as the average person, I now watch a few hours a month.
I still get as much (or more) information as before, I just don't get it via television. I do watch far more movies and series now that I stream them.
TV ratings will continue to decrease but it doesn't necessarily mean less people are watching the content.

I find myself bored to death watching TV - I rather play amazon Echo in the background w music i like etc - and surf the web while i do other stuff. TV now to me just a time waste

I don't know their political alignment. I think the FBI killed one guy but that was off site on a road somehwere.
But this thread is about the entertainment industry and their dwindling influence on the general population.
