Title: Tonight's question from the gym...
Post by: cephissus on October 27, 2017, 10:09:50 PM
Does anyone still "do abs"? ???

Seems to have fallen out of style. I stopped any consistent ab work probably 5+ years ago. Don't know if it's made a difference.

I haven't trained and since 1999

Aside from demonstrating ab machines or Kettlebells crunches/Russian twists during boot camps and such.

If you bodybuild or train like a bodybuillder why wouldn't you? It's a muscle......train it.

I have much more in common with a strength athlete than a bodybuilder but,  high frequency front Squats, chins, and standing overhead (BTN) pressing hits my core pretty well. If I was going to go full bodybuilder I would throw in some direct ab work for the additional hypertrophy of the abs that it gives you. As it is I have a vague six pack when relaxed but it could be improved if that was my desire.

Not nearly enough.

Not nearly enough.

Keeping in mind that my goals prioritize function over aesthetic, what would you add?

Currently using these movements in addition to said front squats , chins, and standing (BTN) presses (some of which also hit to varying degrees):
RDL
Flat
Incline
Close Grip
Lateral raises
BB row
rear delt fly
Clean from the hang
Curls (LOL)  ;D

Doing tons of crunches, planks, etc. is nothing like the training bodybuilders do for their arms, back, legs, chest, shoulders, etc. and weighted ab exercises feel awkward and ineffective ineffective.

Your abs are similar to your lower back. Do people do high rep body weight exercises for lower back? No, yet everyone does them for abs... Why?

It looks like all of the work you’re doing is saggital. “Core” is made up of 12 muscles including rotational and lumbar. Core for power we do a ton of med ball (upright and ground based) as well as anti-rotation work to protect the spine. We do core work everyday. Here’s a sample of a power rotation drill w/med ball and anti-rotation using a sled...

maybe a few more people should call him out on his constant bullshit, I have left him alone for a while, he just gets carried away and starts spouting shit again.

Fuck me, people are now blowing smoke up his arse in his online battle with GH15.

Wake up call.....they are both bullshitting liars.

I find it interesting that you're asking to see his personal training certificates. Yet, when I asked you to provide information about the 3 IQ tests you took, you ran away with your tail between your legs. Now you're asking him to provide information about possible certifications. Why should he provide information about his certificates if you will not provide information about your IQ tests?

Also, receiving a personal training certificate means nothing. Look at the minimum qualifications. Anyone can get into a program. Further,  I knew a guy who received numerous certificates in a years time just because he paid the money and passed a test.  ::) ::)

TO BECOME AN NASM-CPT, CANDIDATES MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Must have current Emergency Cardiac Care (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification prior to sitting for the exam (not required to   purchase the CPT).

a lot of pros just train them before a show. I only do a few sets of sit ups or hanging abs now.

Training abs is easy and seems to make them pop a little bit more

Lots of people with good abs that claim to never train them , makes me think it's probably not necessary but I figure it can't hurt
