so many conflicting articles on the internet
lets say you work out at home, and dont have access to a lat/tricep machine to perform pushdowns, what free weight exercise targets best the lateral head?
or is it just a size/bodyfat issue?

weighted dips? close grip bench press elbows flared? lying down across the body dumbell extensions?

In addition to paused close grip bench, lying triceps ext (I prefer straight bar) lowering bar behind head rather than to forehead and lying dB ext one arm at a time again lowering behind head/shoulder.
Prefer pushdowns though

Just pick an exercise you can feel stressing the triceps and that you enjoy doing it

MRI analysis has proven that overhead extensions stress the long head more, while rope press downs stress more the lateral head.
MRI has also revealed that regular bench presses do hardly anything for the long head... it's almost all lateral and medial heads.

Stick with ngb,skulls and overhead ext.All you will need and if tris don’t develop from those they prob won’t.

Everyone’s built differently,you can’t assume that will happen to every single person who performs that excercise, to me the straight bar feels more natural and have never had any issues from it

The long-head originates from the scapula and as a result part of the function of the muscle is to bring the elbow up and back. So, kickbacks are a good exercise for this. However, the poor leverage of the move allows for very little weight to be used. I believe the rope extensions are superior as you can load up a bit.

Personally, I’ve been at it too long to obsess about each individual head of my triceps. I just do one basic exercise and move on with life.

there are twin brothers who train at my gym, both are in good nick with decent size, they have no tricep development at all, the back of the arm is totally straight, nothing they do will ever get them triceps
I do maybe 12 sets a week for triceps and mine are fine.

Any movement you can use the most weight on. For me I treated loose form skull crushers and close grip bench as though they where lifts at a power meet. I would record my poundage and reps for both of these and strive to use heavier weights each and every week. I was able to loose form skull crush #205 for 3x8 and strict form close bench #315 3x5. My triceps where thick full and cut from shoulder all the way down to the elbow.

yes those close grip press with cambered bar is very under rated i dont know why more people arent doing it... and look at those arms on Larry and freddy, unreal....
overhead press will stimulate mainly lateral and medial head of triceps. doing them with strong lockout and doing them heavy will definitely stimulate them. also bench dips really squeezing them hard will work well.

It's so odd that the tricep is shaped liked that. Just think how much bigger our arms could be if the center of the tricep was also filled with muscle.
But, that is how God made our triceps, so it is what it is.
