I met Chuck at Golds Gym, Venice in October 1968. Found out his nickname was "Gopher" because of his teeth. Made me wonder how a bodybuilding champion who we all knew from the magazines could be treated like that.
After a few weeks at the gym I concluded the rule there was to put shit on the other guy if it made you feel good...but do it first!
Zabo was The Chief and Joe Gold was the Dog Catcher, apparently because of the quality of women he picked up at Venice Beach. Joe used to play volleyball there.
Lydia, Zabo's wife at the time, had Chuck at their wedding. Apparently he was encouraged to take his shirt off and pose at the reception which he did! Ah, the good old days.

Great pics and story Vince!

The story and photos were posted by Lydia at Ironage. Forum no longer online.

Back in those good old days when there were no more than 10 competitors competing for a tin trophy, you could always count on Chuck to be in the lineup.
I can't confirm this but I think that Chuck competed in more contests than any other Southern California contender.
Reg Lewis just might have entered a couple less.

One of the great short bodybuilders of the 60's, Never saw a pic of him where he wasn't in top shape. A big inspiration to many of us from that time.
your brother in Christ,

More bullshit from this guy. The info contained in this post is nothing more than regurgitated magazine articles and copied photos. Vince, who else was on vacation 1000's of miles from home who you happen to meet on a beach in BC?

I post the truth and some anonymous dork challenges what I post. I don't exaggerate or lie or fabricate reality. This is called having integrity. Likewise I don't come on discussion forums as some unknown smartass.

Or that anyone be treated like that, really. The way people treat one another never ceases to amaze. I suppose bullying is something that will never go away though.
