Franco's back and conditioning were incredible.

Thank you for posting this - it's so hard to find anything from this event. Franco looks better there than he did in photos, but his bitch tit was still horrible and his legs still nothing compared to the others. Even if he looked better, there's no way he should have beaten Padilla, Platz or Callendar.

Yep- absolute joke that he won. But then that’s how the Weiders’ ran their contests.

I did a whole series of interviews about the 1981 Mr. Olympia for my Bodybuilding Legends Podcast - http://bodybuildinglegendsshow.com/podcast/

It was a good comeback all things considered, overshadowed by the decision et al.

How do you go on stage with gyno? It's your goddamn job.

Listen at the 6:01 mark. :D

Thanks for posting! Awesome find. While it’s hard to tell from that video who should have won, Franco looked much better than I thought.

IMO Franco was in his best-ever condition in 1981, except of course for his gyno and legs. But he truly took his upper body to another level beyond what he had for his previous O win in 1976.
Undeserved win aside, it was a remarkable and inspiring comeback.

I agree on all counts.

People always talk shit about his wonky eye but he was one hell of a detective.
-
Mentzer, Coe and Zane boycotted because of what happened in 80.
Some things never change.

I agree! I was there and I was really impressed how good Franco's upper body looked. His only downfall was the gyno and zero separation in the quads. Compared to the legs of Platz, Padilla, Callendar and Dickerson, I had to put Franco 5th at best despite his great comeback and his awesome upper body because of the legs.

Padilla 1st.
Platz 2nd.
And Chris "Curious George" Dickerson (that face, those ears) should never have been allowed on stage again.

You're thinking of Sammy Davis Jr. who sung Detective Beretta's theme song, The Candy Man.

Nope. Peter Falk, the actor that played "Columbo" also had a weird eye.

Frank Zane agreed with you on your 1st place pick for the 1981 O--he said it to Mr. Padilla himself in this interview. Try and ignore the mildly obnoxious Castellano dude who made the video.

Great pics from 1981 Mr. Olympia here.

Actually I have never seen a Mr.O winner that dry before or after. That torso is literally a muscle chart
With that kind Of condition and his legs not injured, he would have taken Dicekerson and maybe Banout the following years.
