The legendary Boyer Coe joins the Bodybuilding Legends Podcast to talk about his three NABBA Mr. Universe victories. Boyer also talks about the early days of competing in Bodybuilding, the events leading up to his first NABBA Mr. Universe win in 1969 and his thoughts about Sergio Oliva and Bill Pearl - http://bodybuildinglegendsshow.com/the_podcast_test/season-5-episode-3-boyer-coe/

Just a constructive criticism.
Your voice is really echoey/boomy.
Your guest's voice is perfect.
I think it is the room you are in + possibly your distance from the mic. I don't know how advanced your audio set up us, but you probably have some controls to downplay that echoey/boomy sound. Or you could try sitting a different distance from your microphone.

OK, thanks, I'll try to correct that for the next interview.

Boyer always comes off as the perfect gentleman. Always great listening to his stories.

John, thanks for the privilege you have afforded. Your legendary interview series is awesome and certainly loaded with priceless content. I never thought I would be privy to such historic and unique competitive bodybuilding insight. I appreciate your terrific interview with Boyer Coe. He truly is a bodybuilding legend.

Thanks Peter, I appreciate that.

He is a great guy, reminds me of Bill Pearl, no ego, just a cool, down to earth guy.

That pic is crazy in the OP. Would like Boyer to speak more on his comeback in the early '90s. He was one of the few of the old guard to remain relevant and not embarrass himself.

Boyer talked about his prep for the 1994 Masters Olympia in this interview I did with him a couple years ago -

Yeah I remember that, he mentioned he used GH for the first time... he looked damn good.

Yeah, that was great how open and honest he was.

What would Arnold have looked like had he used GH back in his prime? 280 pounds onstage. Crazy to think about.

That was a great interview. Boyer is well spoken yet humble. Those young "instagram" "youtuber" "personalities" bodybuilders could learn a thing or two from him, alas, they won't.

Who mentioned a hairpiece ??? >:(

It would be interesting to hear about these "old timers" and their first experience taking steroids
I'm sure it was nothing compared to guys today but it seems a small amount went a long way back then
Here is a pic of Coe as a teenager (per a claim on Dave Draper site)
It had to be crazy to walk around like this as a teenager in the 1960's
He's 19 or just turned 20 in the 2nd picture
For comparison you can see Boyer at a time when I think he said he was off all drugs in those Nautilus videos he did in the 1980's with Mike and Ray Mentzer

Boyer looked great as a teenager. He told me that he bench pressed 400 pounds while in high school. Back in the '60's, he was probably one of the few kids in high school who could bench press that much.

The two pics I posted are from him as a teenager
seems like he discovered those magic pills sometime around 16 or 17

Yes, in my interview with Boyer, he said he started taking steroids at 17 because he was friends with someone who knew Alvin Roy, the strength and conditioning coach who introduced steroids to the NFL.

Boyer was a great bodybuilder. comes over very well in Johns interview.
-
Boyer has a lot of interesting stories. I enjoyed those over the mundane winning contest stuff.
Didn't hear Boyer until 15 minutes. Way too long to have to wait. Last interview I gave up listening!

Boyer is always one of my favorite interviews. A real gentleman, no ego at all and he always has great stories to share for his really remarkable career in the sport.
-
LOL,
Those of us who were contemporaries of Boyer and Dennis and others aspired to win the NABBA Mr Universe title.
What a shame that the title isn't as 'important' as the Mr Olympia title. All those older guys are almost forgotten and those
big titles don't mean as much any more. What was Joe Weider thinking? You can't be bigger or better than Mr Universe.
-
Great arms !

John can you do Bill Pearl?

John can you do Bill Pearl?
I believe Bill has Parkinson's Disease now and Boyer Coe recently told me that he has stopped doing public appearances. I can try and do an interview by the phone. I know a good friend of his who lives in Chicago so maybe I'll ask him if Bill is open to it.
