I will be keeping a log as I get ready for three shows in April and May
Im doing a IBFA final qualifier on the 28th April, A NAC qualifier on the 5th May and a NABBA Britain qualifier on the 19th May, I need a top 6 at the Britain to qualify for the Universe in November.
If I qualify I will be doing all the other organisation finals as well..
Will be putting everything into my prep this year to try and get the desired results.

Thank you. In regards to your weekend carb refeeds....is it a controlled refeed? As in...pretty much just adding healthy carbs on top of your Mon-Fri foods? Or do you just relax your entire diet for those 2 days and just eat what you fancy? Thanks again for your post.

Ahh....good stuff. Thank you for the replies. As you get closer to your contest dates....do you make the refeeds cleaner? Or shorten the days from 2 to 1? Hope these arent too many questions. I have found your take on nutrition as well as your training to really cut through the bullshit. Good stuff.

I only clean it last couple weeks as I conscious about not ruining what I have done
I do something slightly different prep week than the norm but I got the info from someone who makes money prepping so its unfair for me to give away that bit.

quick update, looked better today, was a bit flat last week and looked shitty, upper body chest and shoulders quite defined, legs coming through, still got my normal bit of fat around my abs and low back, always last to come off these days, never used to be, was always glutes in the past.
there is truth in that the creation of fat cells in an area always come back once they have been there, I never had fat on my abs until I stopped training in the late 90s, once its on it never really goes away permanently.

I did a couple of weeks last year but stopped when I decided I wasnt competing in November
I should do some for general health, but for burning fat its just easier to eat less...

Training split at the moment? If I am correct...twice a week per bodyparts. Moderate volume of sets? Just basing that upon from what I recall reading in older posts.

Yes...I agree. Too many guys concerned about pushing mega heavy weight. After I tore my left pec in 98....my surgeon...who used to be a competive bodybuilder as well as a competitive powerlifter told me to start training smarter and to concern myself with training longetivity. I was in my 20's at the time and stubborn, but I started to pick the brains of older bodybuilders in my gym at the time during my recovery and 90% of them told me the same thing. To pull the heavy weight ego out of my ass. Seems like building a balanced and muscular competitive bodybuilding physique got mixed up with maximal poundages somewhere along the line. I tend to feel that the early 90's appearance of Yates and his training philosophy caused a ton of this. I know it definitely influenced me at the time to go heavier and heavier and to implement forced reps and other risk inducing methods which helped me toward tearing my pec. My years prior to that...I trained way smarter, moderate poundages and other techniques that stimulated the muscle. I was and still am a big proponent of drop sets and also very very brief rest periods between sets. Thanks again for sharing your insight and this thread.

What would you estimate your protein intake to be? And does it differ precontest to offseason. If I recall from a previous post on another thread...you are moderate with protein. Possible closer to 100grams at points.

Not totally off the subject, but I am curious as to whom your influences were or anybody that you kinda mentored in your earlier days of competing or starting along your bodybuilding path. As I stated months ago...I was always a huge follower and fan of Bodypower magazine in the 80's -90's along with the scene in Great Britain.

I learned my initial prepping from Fred Chadwick, Marion Bolds brother, he won the middleweights at the Brits when Dorian won the overall and turned pro, his sister also won the women's overall the same year.
I still see Fred when Im prepping, hes one of the only people I can trust to be totally honest with me.

Incredible physique on Fred. I just looked him up and now remember seeing a photo or two of him from that show from another British mag back in the day. Incredibly balance physique on the man. Also just checked out some photos of his gym. I love the look of that place. Reminds me of that great solid 1970's equipment that just doesnt quit. I remember old 1970's Ironman magazines as well as early MTI issues that advertised equipmwnt like that. Great that you have such a trusted guy to be honest with you. Thanks for sharing.

Fred opened his gym back in 85 I think, he made most of the equipment himself after doing a welding course.
Its still the same equipment in there to this day.
He runs his gym with a no drop weights policy, anyone dropping weights is asked to leave.
I would love to see Branch and Johnnie try and get in Freds for a workout.
Back in the 80s it was a hive of activity with Mary Ann Gay, Kev Taylor, Gary Shelmerdine and Ian Atkinson all coming down to train at weekends.

Just seen thread, count me in. Legs really have improved, goes to show if you know your body and can establish a good mind to muscle connection you don't need to use really heavy weight.
Are you doing any ab work? Twenty mins of sit ups and legs raises will really pull your physique together I don't see any weaknesses.

knee raises and ab roll crunches, cant do sit ups because of my low back.
I think crunches are far more effective to isolate the abs..

started off with 15 mins on bike and got a good pump in my legs
couple warm up sets with 20k on hacks, I make sure I get something out of every set, squeezing the muscle on every rep
between sets I constantly flex my thighs alternately until they burn.
I did around 3/4 sets with 40k again, I make sure Im fully spent each set, I dont really count reps, I find it distracting when Im counting
I then did pendulum squat, with these I concentrate on fully bottoming out to fully stretch the quads (3/4 sets)
couple sets of leg extension, concentrate on full then partial reps and keep going until the pain stops me.
I then do standing single leg ham curls, with these I pull from the hamstring, I dont really concentrate on the weight, its about the muscle contraction.
then 3 sets lying leg curls, holding at peak contraction, I go to failure, then stop for a few seconds then go again, I do that a couple of times.
Calves I just do standing raises, around 6 sets

Are you still using Rubber Resistance Bands for a solid portion of your training? I have been using them for years in my routines and find them incredible.

I use them between sets, I dont use them all the time, I will occasionally use them to do lateral raises if the cable machine is in use
I also use them when Im training back to warm up.
Same with biceps triceps...

I also buy french breadsticks and hollow them out, it gets rid of all the doughy bread and just leaves the hard crust, I also get the part baked rolls and do it with those.

400gms organic steak pieces spiced and fried in 1tsp coconut oil
1 boil in the bag long grain white rice
4 rice cakes with 1 cup of cottage cheese

lettuce 1tbsp olive oil
If I ate 6 whole eggs at 6am I wouldn't feel like eating until 12pm...

flapjack is oats and sugar,butter and oil..
I prefer oatibix...I have eaten wheatabix, I do get bloated eating wheat and bread so try and avoid it, I do like bread though.

normally just a 10 kilo, I occasionally use a 15, I keep my back arched and just pivot forward from the hips, it puts all the tension on the hams and glutes, I can even feel it in my calves..
Its a hard movement to explain, TBH its hard to master properly, I have showed it to a few people who asked but they invariably end up doing it with. around back so they can lean forward further which defeats the object, the plate only goes to my shins.

off diet yesterday and today, chucking some carbs and sodium in, chocolate and crisps
having a lamb roast dinner today, just bought a few microwave meals, carbonara and Bolognese , they are around 400 cals a pack, just spilt one and have it with chicken or steak , makes dieting so much more interesting and achievable.
I will leave the chicken and rice 5 times a day to the masochists.

And.....What is the time limit for your nighttime posing routine? In seems that these days in the states...that most all shows are a 60 second maximum. Which to me....is way too short to allow much of anything in the sense of a nice piece of music. Back in the late 80's and 90's....I know that all of the local and state shows that I competed in allowed 2 minutes of a routine. Which to me..allowed enough time to pick and edit a solid piece of music and create a nice dramatic arc for a posing routine. But now...due to too many extra classes...ala physique and "bedroom body boardshorts"class....if they didnt cut off at 60 seconds...the show would last until the next morning. Just curious. ..thanks.

they do have a minute limit, my music this year is 1 minute 17, if you pose well they tend to leave it running (fingers crossed)
Posing isnt even judged anymore, apart from some of the physique classes where they judge on your presentation.

I will be keeping a log as I get ready for three shows in April and May
Im doing a IBFA final qualifier on the 28th April, A NAC qualifier on the 5th May and a NABBA Britain qualifier on the 19th May, I need a top 6 at the Britain to qualify for the Universe in November.
If I qualify I will be doing all the other organisation finals as well..
Will be putting everything into my prep this year to try and get the desired results.

The freezing cold part always crept up on me in. the final few weeks of dieting. The leaner I was...the worse it got...and stayed. Do you usually experience this in prior preps?

advised to do a bit, I am doing 15 mins bike 15 mins rower at the moment and walking.
May increase the bike and rowing to 20/25 each depending on how I feel and its daily...

Two weeks yesterday mate, first show 28th April, second one 6th May and then the main show 19th May hoping to qualify for the NABBA Britain on the 26th May . thanks for the tip, will give a try mate, I have to be careful first thing in the morning with my back, two bulging discs are very sensitive first thing

Its harder as you get older, the body picks up little niggles, I havent really trained my legs properly for 3 weeks due to twisting my knee trying to stop the cat running in the road, Im just doing high intensity stationary bike and some hacks with no weight on the machine, and some standing hamstring curls
Will post my daily prep dial in this week but wont be talking about specifics due to the fact I got this prep from Illuminati who PTs and preps others... I will be phononing him this week no doubt even though i have everything written down, hes a real help in the last few days, anyone else thinking of competing and need some last week prep hes really good and cant do enough for you.

great transformation back in the day when you competed were you much larger? or may i ask did you have a phase back in the day where you walked around with some bulk/mass?
i ask bc you look like you put on size through this diet or at the very least didnt lose anyy muscle, and typically guys who were bigger (with more bulk/mass, with fat water etc) earlier in there career are the ones who pull that off the best transformations during prep

I have always stayed pretty lean, I started training at around 150lb and have gained about 55lb of lean tissue over the years, my heaviest weight was around 16st 10lb
when i stopped lifting in 96 I evened out at 14st, my body composition was a lot different than my contest physique but I didnt look that much smaller in clothes, I can drop 2st now and people at work dont really notice, in clothes I look pretty normal...

Jeff....you won that show. And you know that inside. And looking at those photos and routine...you CLEARLY are the winner regardless of what the judges put on paper. Great job!!! I can see quite a difference in body mass from last year. And your posing routine was fantastic. You are an incredible poser. Incredible transitions...from the flexing...to even how you hold your hands during transitions. Loved the music. You squeezed in a lot of great posing in a compressed time. Reminded me of a few great Lee Labrada routines. Anyhow....GREAT JOB man. So very inspiring.

I have had some great feedback on FB from some high profile people in the industry, Im going to do the finals on June 10th up in Gateshead, I hadnt planned to diet so long as I only planned up until hopefully the Britain on the 26th May, but I cant leave it like that...

I phoned the organiser asking for feedback, he then posted on the judges forum and asked how they voted, after 4 out of 6 said they placed me first he then realised something was wrong
they then re-visted the sheets and realised the error, if the judges had spoken to each other on the day it would have been recitified then.
the person responsible mixed up our numbers with our scores.

Not getting to compete for the Overall this past weekend due to the screw up really is unfortunate. Clearly you are going into this next show ready to take it all without any bullshit mishaps on judges part. Very interested in what your plan will be in the last few days of June 10th show....considering the previous days post regarding your incredible conditioning days after the show having relaxed and eaten without any other variables at play. Anyhow.....Congrats again and looking forward to many more weeks of this thread and an overall win for you in June.

That sounds like a fantastic plan. The last time that I competed....due to pretty much the same reasobs that you have documented....I kept on my regular lower carb diet up until 1 am on the Saturday of my show. An hour prior at midnite...I stopped all my water intake. But at 1 am...I started eating everything under the sun. Pretty much an entire large pizza, McDonalds cheeseburgers, fries, a bag of chocolate chip cookies and haagen daz ice cream. I also chewed 3 antacids every 2 hours to neutralize stomach acids. I kept this going until 7 am. I carbs seemed to load me up enough and pull waterever water I had remaining under my skin into the muscle. The antacids kept my stomach acids in check. Of course I. was thirsty...but I had tested this method out pretty much every weekend on my intial cheat meals. Hence I was prepared for it. Did it work? Yes...like a charm. I was full as hell and more vascular than I had ever been from a traditional carb load of oats and yams.. Should have done it years ago...but didnt want to take the risk. Anyway...I believe that your gameplan is going to work out perfect. Best of luck Jeff.

14st 4lb this morning, feeel I look good enough to step onstage now... will carry on eating normally today until 9pm when I add in the pizza and ice cream,. no water from 11pm
very tight this morning and muscles quite hard, , looking at adding 3lb or so with the refeed.
Havent done anything at all with sodium, just eating my normal food with sauces and using milk.

its 0945 and i am drying out nicely, really vascular , will be leaving in around half an hour, show starts 1pm, should be onstage by 2.15 to 2.30
Just going to add in some oats and honey around 12pm then some chocolate around 20mins before going on...

You looking amazing. We are our own harshest critics...but considering what we are partaking in here..it is understandable. That being said...I think that you are good to go. Any little bit of drying out...should be easy to make happen. How I look at it....The package that you are bringing to this show is well beyond 95% of the others....especially with regards to your shape and symmetry. No weaknesses that draw the eyes away. In these past 2 years of shows...you are the only guy in that top 3-5 lineup that is bringing in everything to balance. That mix of Symmetry, Size and Conditioning. So IMO...5% dryer or less dry....aint ging to negate the rest. Sorry for this long winded reply bro, but you are going to be great today on that stage. All the best...again.

Sadly...yes...it seems like conditioning will win out above all else.A guy can come in as a mess of bodyparts looking like Big Lenny but if he is shredded dry....he will be given first place above a slightly less conditioned Bob Paris body. Seen it happen 99% of the time. Total horseshit... but you have a no-quit attitude...so I know you will pull it off on next run. Thats all you need to pull off an overall win. Keep it going man!

I totally get it. The last time that I stood onstage was in 2004. While I gave myself 18 weeks of prep.....I found myself not coming in where I needed to be. And I knew that I was going to be fucked if I waited any longer. So at 6 weeks out....I dropped my carbs to trace amounts only found in Splenda and whatever was in low carb whey. My daily total carbs were between 10 -15 grams per day. And the only fat in my diet was whatever was intramuscularly in the chicken breast. My protein intake was set at 250 grams per day over 5 meals. I ate this near zero carb and near zero fat...only protein diet for the entire 6 weeks and binged-junked loaded for a 24 hour window from Saturday evening at 10pm until Sunday evening at 10pm. I also jacked my cardio up to (2) 90 minute recumbent bike sessions per day...and in a fasted state for both. So a total of 3 hours daily...except on the Sunday junk day. It did the job. I ended up shredded as fuck. On the last week....I didnt even bother to load up at all. I went into the contest on Zero carbs. I was not going to risk anything to even show up anything but dry shredded with no water retention. During the last 2 weeks....I monitered my morning condition each day after my Sunday cheat. I found that there was a sweet spot for me on Thursday morning...in which I was still somewhat full enough but holding ZERO water and dry as fuck from the previous 3 days of zero carbs. So.....on last week....I held off on my cheat day until Tuesday. Just gorged myself on junk all day on Tuesday. Then Zero carbed back on my daily diet all the way through the night show on Saturday evening. Kept my daily measured intake of 1/4 teaspoon of iodized salt...as well as my chicken and 3 low carb whey-water shakes. Plus 1 gallon bottled water. On day of show...I only drank water. Did no food at all...all day. Just stayed hydrated. And I pumped the fuck out of my side delts, chest, triceps and biceps backstage in giant sets. The major pump session gave me a carb loaded visual effect without the danger of a carb load. Worked out beyond perfect. I won my class in the top of the light heavies....as going in on Zero carbs found myself dropping under the Heavyweight cutoff. Which I should have done years prior anyhow. Anyway....it worked. And it was very effective and non risky. And I was dry-shredded as all hell. Years ago...I found a Q&A thread with Chris Aceto in which he said that he thought that going into a show on no carb load or diet changes whatsoever is a very valid way to go. He even said that Mohammed Makkaway used to enter his last years of Olympia shows on his zero carb diet and only drink water on day of show. So....it made sense...having experienced it myself firsthand years before. Sorry for longwinded reply...but thought it could be of positive influence for you. All the best man.
PS....wanted to add... that I ended up using a combo of a large bottle of diet coke and a 200 mg caffeine capsule prior to each cardio and training session...to make it through each workout on the zero carbs.

Chris has been helping prep my friend Kamal ( 212lb winner at The A Classic )
He used a different approach with him last couple of times he’s prep’d him.
The zero carb approach will work definitely at what cost,
Only there are several factors to consider & weigh up
If that is the best approach.
Personally not so sure it is for “be Back “ for where he is now,
That’s just my opinion & He clearly has his own ideas
And game plan.

It was just to share an experience that I had and used in reference to Jeff stating 2 hours of cardio...and the tin or tuna comment. I wouldnt advise such extreme measures. As for me....I have always been carb sensitive in general. Was an overweight teen and got my shit together by 15 when I started competing in bodybuilding. While I have doeted on many methods over the years...from John Parillos Captri High Calorie diet to Low Protein -High Carb...to Keto with weekend reloads...etc..etc. But as for what you asked....I did find myself in my best condition via that method of zero carbs and no carb load. I am one of those guys who can handle keeping a good amount of fullness on zero carbs after the initial 2 days of weight drop. Dont sufffer any brain fuzz or mental clarity. Nor does my strength suffer at all. So...yes...it really worked well for me. If I ever xompete again...which I am mulling over due to the inspiration I find from Jeffs thread...I would most likely do my zero carb, low fat approach again.

I feel this was my tighest condition this prep, its on Wednesday morning two days of low carbs after a weekend of carbs and normal food

A strange one you would expect to see a few lb gained.
If you improved condition wise that's a step forwards,
Condition as you say is a Big factor to some judges
to big a factor at times or should i say the only factor
which is wrong.

Hard to tell from different pics in different lighting & tan
only certainly look tighter than the pics from sunday show
Appears your bodys holding a layer of water that smooths you over.
sodium / potassium imbalance or cortisol level high
Such a fine balance at that level of bodyfat that a relatively
small amount of subcutaneous water makes a huge difference.

Great shot here. Few guys are going to look great in such a pose. As for the set of daily photos in which you say you feel you look your best....days after refeed....I agree that those pics have you looking at a great balance of tight-dry...yet still "visually" looking full. I get what you mean though....about how the muscle feels soft to touch. But the visual tells a different story. As Illuminati said...whatever route you go...go. Hopefully my own story-insight helps-helped....if you implement an aspect of that method. Whatever you do...I think you are going to nail it on this next go.

so, heres the plan
food
steak , fish , quinoa, oats
No sauces , or dairy, no rice, no more eggs
will be on very little carbs, 50gms of oats at work with water, a small amount of quinoa with my steak and fish purely for texture.
thats every day up until the show, Saturday the 12th will allow myself a small amount as im going watching Phantom of the Opera with my wife in London..
No carbing up at all prior to show.
Have discussed backstage prep options with the gym owner who has agreed to help me on the day..
A few concoctions lets say... :-\
Something I am eating at the moment is fucking me up and not allowing me to get rid of the water, so its a total overall of diet.
Food so far today
2 eggs (last ones) wagu burger
chicken and rice (last lot)
2 steak burgers
later will have a rib eye steak
last meal steak burger
Will be alternating fish and steak as of tomorrow
If this doesnt get me in shape consider me retired...

Big thanks to illuminatti for all his help and advice in the lead up to this show and last year, his advice is top notch, it worked last year for me but this time somethings just not right with what Im doing.
The distance approach is also a concern, at least with my friend at the gym hes seeing me every day and can adjust anything accordingly.

Clearly...as we both have stated....EVERYTHING is about conditioning. Being deathly dry onstage. Sad but true. As usual...your shape, symmetry and size....that trio...is top notch. And your posing cannot be improved upon. You are bringing the posing to the stage that was the norm back in the day. You compulsory poses...your transitions...and confidence in the execution of them is perfect. So...all that being said....NAIL THAT DAY-OF CONDITIONING. As you already know :)
I think your plan looks awesome. I absolutely believe that it is going to work. And the execution is pretty straightforward. Good stuff Jeff!!!
