Title: Everyone says live in ny for a year and it will be the best year of your life
Post by: flinstones1 on February 17, 2018, 07:03:31 PM
Is this true?

I make good money out in LA as a private trainer but I’m ready for a change. I’m seriously willing to give all my clients up as a personal trainer and take a bouncing job to start a new life in New York. The traffic, everything closing at 2am , the dirty beaches etc.  I’m over it.

New York is amazing. Never have I been in a city where hot women are so aggressive and run up to you and want to fuck you. Plus the people are way better and the food..Every time I leave New York I get envious of my friends that live there because I feel like I’m missing out on so much the city has to offer.

For those that live there or have lived there is it really all that? I’m talking about manhataan obviously

Tried south beach for a week.  The women are insane but the food was terrible....also felt like I was
Literally doing the same fucking thing every day. Definitely likes it better than la..and seems like it would be fun if you had a bit..but other than that It would be an easy place to get bored real quick. Can’t imagine how much quality tourist pussy  I would smash there you literally meet chicks from everywhere it’s unreal. New York in the spring and Miami would be ideal. La will destroy your soul though

25 so if I’m gonna move I’m gonna do it now.  I’ve been in la for four years now...I’ve had some Good experiences here but at this point I’m my life just ready for a change. I also don’t like the idea of being housebroke...you can’t get shit for your money here. Obviously New York is the same deal but the city has so much more to offer. I’m lacking stimulation...everyone and everything here is just too laid back for me and the people aren’t genuine.  It’s hard to describe....you can have a ton of friends and multiple women in your life but la can still feel like a very lonely place. I’ve seen a lot of people move here and get depressed/lose themselves

Missed California when I left. Regretted it pretty quick.

Dunno if I could stand n.y. driving, or lack thereof. Paying for parking... Or paying to take a cab everywhere.

When I left san Diego I quickly realized that along with 4 distinct seasons, you no longer have girls in the grocery store 12months a year wearing shorts, sandals, & tee's.

NYs taxes suck as well I hear. Curious what they are compared to CA, especially if you claim income as a trainer/1099. Also dunno if they require a Guard Card to work security. Shouldn't cost much tho.

Then there's cost of living...

Have you spent time in either Chicago or Dallas? Each has upsides and downsides, but they both have genuine people and that may be what you need most of all right now. Plus each has a big city feeling and pulse but admittedly not at the level of NYC or LA. Plus your money goes FAR in both those cities. There’s no place like New York for excitement though. I lived there 3 years in my 20s and don’t regret those years a bit. The problem is there’s a high likelihood that the excitement will wear off and it will be like LA is for you now and you will probably want to move on again. No money in the bank, no house, dirty streets. But maybe take that chance anyway and get it out of your system. Sorry there are mixed messages here but also check out Chicago and Dallas if you have not done so already.

What you wrote is a Sex in The City fantasy starring Flintstones as Carrie.

Seriously, you probably could have lived that way as a bouncer or personal trainer in the 80's - mid 90's. Any place that is now popping in NYC is going to cost a fortune. I know young guys with good jobs that are living with 2-3 roommates, till they find a girl and move in with her.  Those relationships usually fail because now they're both busting their ass.

Forget having a car usually, parking fees are $300 - 400 for a safe place in the city. On street parking is a big pain in the ass. Driving in general is :(.

Your supermarket food bill will probably go up 30% over what your paying now in the city proper. A lot of younger folks wind up going to the outer boroughs to get food, etc.....

All that awesome nightlife you heard about? Mostly gone because of - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_Cabaret_Law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_Cabaret_Law) . They repealed them last year, but I doubt the club scene will be coming back.

There is some cool stuff, like the museums, libraries, galleries, etc.... , but if that's not your thing than :(. And you can still find great food, and there are beautiful women of all flavors.

New York was / is great if you have real money to enjoy it, are in a field like entertainment, or are old enough to remember the fun things back in the day. But most folks just wind up regular working stiffs just like everybody else :).

You can't own a car in Manhattan. No where to park it. Traffic is so heavy it's better to walk or use public transportation. Rents are through the roof. Many people who work in Manhattan live in NJ.

The positives is that without a doubt NY has the best food in the world. You can find any ethic food you want made by legit people from that country. Once you live there you will quickly realize how crappy food is in the majority of states in the US. Having something as simple as a bagel will ruin you for one outside of NY/NJ area. Also the city never sleeps. 24 hours something is going on. The salaries there are the highest anywhere. I knew a woman who was a personal trainer who got connected and she was making sick money.  Then again she knew the ins and out of how to maneuver the rich people and also the gyms that keep outside trainers out. The city is really exciting but it is exhausting. Just being in crowds all the time tires me out. Since no one owns a car you notice most people living in Manhattan are thin. You would think fat slobs are everywhere but it's the opposite. Also the hottest women anywhere dressed to kill are all over Manhattan trying to make it. The bar scene is incredible. Someone mentioned the Cabaret law. Don't worry about it. It just says of you serve liquor and have a dance floor you need a special license. Clubs are everywhere. Bars are on every block.

Doubt I could stand the crowds for long.  I'd give the nightlife a try, maybe it's evolved, but tbh never enjoyed the scene even when I was young.  If I make the trip it'll be for the museums, the Italian, and the 1&only 1MR.

What part of Cali did you leave weren't you in San Diego? That beats the hell out of LA. Laguna and newport would be a great place to raise a family for a guy in his 30's....right now just too slow for me.

Neither one but I heard amazing things about Chicago. Glad to know you didn't regret those years in your 20's. Not owning a house isn't a huge deal for me because its not like Im going to buy property in LA any time soon anyways. A nice house (only 3000 square feet even) in a nice area your looking at 1.5 million.

This. Plus, you ain't getting your money's worth. I know people who are renting rooms for money that would make Goodrum faint. Also NYC seems filled to brim with people who move to NYC for the experience and so that they can say that they "live in Brooklyn"
Flintstones, you need to look for stability, stop wasting your money moving here and there, and then getting tired or frustrated with the place (or people in the place) you moved to. You will find out that the mentality of New Yorkers maybe different than those of from LA, and you may find that when you get to NYC, that there are a lot of guys just like you, so you basically have to compete with them, and they are established.

I love NYC. Best city ive visited hands down. Last time i went was last november, central park was so nice, felt like I was in a movie walking in those streets.
Probably one hell of an experience to live there for a while.
But you NEED money, its not somewhere you want to be if you dont make a good living. I see people talking about cars and shit, you DONT NEED A CAR thats the point of living in a city.

So the nightlife is dead in new york  ::)

A lot of it is. All the clubs attached to Gaitan are gone. The Limelight space did turn into http://limelightfit.com/ . Maybe you can work there :).

Sound Factory's big spot was done for lots of years, I see Freq opened there a couple of months ago, we'll see if it stays.  The smaller one is a Japanese restaurant now.

I could run through dozens of others spots that are gone. Now folks will say, that's the club business. And that's true, but the problem is that new nightlife doesn't usually open up in those spots or at those sizes. The cabaret laws, other zoning things, the rise of bottle service, plus the real estate market does them in. It's less hassle to let a drug store, start up, etc.... take the space. Or turn it into condos.

They used to just pack it up and move it to LIC, parts of Brooklyn, etc.... but even that is falling victim to the above.

There are still big or mid sized clubs in Manhattan - Marquee, 1 Oak, Lavo, etc....

Everything is way more spread out and expensive, and at least as far as night life goes, a shadow of what it once was. When you hear people wax poetic about New York, they are mostly remember the Manhattan of the 70's - early 2000's.

The advice to try NJ living is a good one. If you pick the right spot, you'll be a short ride away from the city, save a ton of money, and you won't miss much.

Sure, I'm one hundred percent in agreement. But by the same token, I've seen lots of folks scared to take the trains (especially if it's to the outer boroughs, or off the 4,5,6 line). Some people get used to it, but if you're used to having a car, it can be a shock. There are buses(:-\), You can walk or bike depending on distance, or take cab type services. But if you take the most bottom of the barrel Gypsy cab, it's still a ton of money doing it day to day.

Terrible advice. You might as well live in Iowa. Either you live in Manhattan or you don't. Once you have to cross a bridge or tunnel the experience is ruined.

I agree with that advice about Jersey. If you’re feeling kind of lonely in LA, you’ll probably feel exactly the same way stuck out on the PATH line over in Jersey. The problem is the expense of Manhattan (not as bad if you give up the car). Brooklyn is a possibility where you still can feel like you are in the mix of things, but I am guessing the decent neighborhoods there may be approaching the expense of Manhattan these days. How do you feel about rooming with other people? Even back in the day, I could not believe the size and condition of the shit holes single people lived in there. Once about 10 years ago I visited a DOCTOR I knew who just moved there and I had to keep from saying anything when I walked into his dump. You are used to units in LA which are super expensive but clean and spacious, I am just being realistic here. Maybe room with two or three other people if you can tolerate that.

Good photo in the other thread. Post the new shredded version when you get an opportunity. Props.

Good advice.  I lived with 20-40 people (it varied) in a house in London.  I wouldn't call it one of the best times of my life but it sure was an affordable way to get a foot in the local door.

I agree with the wisdom above.  Do not move to New Jersey.

clubbing in the city is dead sure, but it's very much alive in Brooklyn; lot 45, house of yes, paper boxx output, the keep, Brooklyn mirage, schimanski, good room. not to mention whatever warehouse cityfox is renting out on any given weekend.

bullshit, i haven't had a need to go into Manhattan in weeks. there's literally 0 need if you're under 30 to leave Brooklyn,lic\astoria

Ok on Brooklyn and even possibly Astoria (but not sure), but do you put Jersey City or Hoboken in that class? I think he should check out Chicago before considering Jersey (no offense to Springsteen)

24-7 hate Black. We get it. Ever thought about going after the Mandingo who f@cked your GF? Maybe becoming a more-active ChinaMan?

I'm looking at it like this - Hoboken and Jersey City are picking up and have been for the last decade, but you can still find Condos, etc.... for $300 - 400k, or have a two bed room all to yourself for less than a studio will cost you in the boring parts of Brooklyn. Also if I remember right, Flintstones is originally from NJ, so there might be a comfort factor.

And I get the point about tons of other cities having more value to the dollar, but if the kid has his heart set on the NY tristate, NJ might be the way to go.

I see your point. I think of Jersey as a place to go after you have made some friends, got some roots going on. And then you move there because you feel settled and you’ve had your fix of Manhattan (or Brooklyn for that matter) and you want more for your money. It still makes me nervous him coming from anonymous LA and just plunking himself down in Jersey. But he should fly to Newark and check out those places and get his own reactions. Otherwise it will be a shithole in Manhattan or Brooklyn or 5 roommates. Take Southwest to Newark and also stop over for a few days in Chicago for reactions.

You're a peasant who's worried about saving a buck.

Huge difference between being in Manhattan and living on the outskirts like a wanna-be.

Two family members purchased a small $600,000 (approx) apartment in the Brooklyn area and when other family members fly east to visit them, they have to sleep standing up.

And I have been told that rentals are so expensive oin Manhattn that it is not too uncommon for nite and daytime workers to share the rent and only sleep in a one-bedroon unit when the other is at work.

Or something like that.

not at all, for what we pay for my 1br in Brooklyn we could easily get a 2-3 br in the lower or upper east. Manhattan has jumped the shark unless you're eastern European, Persian or over 40

That's what people in Astoria, LIC, and gentrified parts of Brooklyn tell themselves to rationalize not living in Manhattan. It's like people who buy a Samsung and insist that it's better than Apple. Real ballers live in Manhattan. Always have, always will.

And I'd like to know where in Brooklyn you are paying what you would pay in the LES or UES for a comparable apartment. You can't compare a renovated apartment in a doorman building in Brooklyn Heights to an unrenovated walk up in Alphabet City.

$600K won't go very far in a good Brooklyn neighborhood. You might be able to get a half-way decent studio that's a good distance from the nearest subway station. While property taxes will be relatively low you might have some fairly high common and maintenance charges depending on the building's finances.

Looks like U didn't travel too much  ::)

Chimps lives in Canada where the population of blacks is less than 2.5% of the population- so he is nicely insulated from reality. He always plays the virtue signaling role on GetBig. If he was a true liberal he’d move to Detroit or Chicago and live with the brothers. But the reality is he’s a limousine liberal and a chickensh!t.

I have some "friends" on Facebook like that. Constantly virtue signaling and taking about how bad whites are and how great blacks are. Then I look at their friends list and it's 98% white. Also their pictures they post with friends are all white. Where are they hiding their black friends? ??? Oh that's right, they don't have any.  ;D

The attitude on OlympiaGym’s posts you might want to take a closer look at. You’ll run up against a lot of that NYC “I am special” provincialism if you move there. Just like in SF area. But, on the whole, much cooler people than what you’re running into in LA I’m guessing. More variety of types, interests, passions, achievements, etc.

In all seriousness Flintstones from your posts you sound like you already have a decent life built for yourself, with a cleint base etc. The grass is not always greener on the other side

Example, here in toronto there is alot of various opportunities, yet housing has skyrocketed, energy costs(heat, electric, hydro has gone up a few hundred percent the past decade) and car insurance is ridiculous, never mid there is no where to park unless you live outside the city or own some stupid bungalorw that is overvalued at $800,000-1,000,000.

People I know and am realted to back in montreal who make on par or even less then most here can afford their homes, energy bills, and car insurance although gas is about 10 cents more a liter and the income tax is way higher.

trying to say is no matter where you live there is give and take. If i was you and really wanted to move to a place where you can live well and ply your trade, then find a small city somewhere away from the monstrosites of cali and ny and set up business there.

i have known a few people who have moved to smaller cities in Ontario and other small cities in canada away from the large urban areas and have done quite well for themselves.

Even some of the guys here who have training businesses in your state and others have upped and moved to smaller cities away from the greater nyc and la regions and probably get more bang for their buck and quality of life than before.

Lots of people make fun of goodrum, but he is smart moving away from the total urban bullshit where he gets more bang for his buck.

I may move back to quebec next year sometime for those very same reasons, right after I finish up some courses I am enrolled in
