Title: Did you ever get screwed by a rental car company?
Post by: Slapper on February 25, 2018, 08:39:31 AM
To make a long story short: I get to the Avis/Budget counter and I'm recommended to get additional "ash and sand" coverage (don't ask). I'm given a diagram with all the damages/dents on the car and am told to inspect the car and come back to them with any additionals. I get outside and the darn fucking thing is completely covered in snow, so I only check the back. The dents/scraps that show up on the diagram do not match those on the car so I figured they shuffled the paperwork, make nothing of it and drive away (it was 4AM, snowing and cold as shit).

I have the car for about a week and it had a layer of ice that covered most of it for about five of those days, making any dents invisible.

Lo and behold, the last day we get a rainstorm and the car is flushed clean. I notice a small crack on the windshield. Since I had to return the car that afternoon, I just took it back figuring they would have the correct diagram showing the crack. WRONG. They had the diagram but it didn't show the crack (it was never shown to me). Better yet, the "ash and sand" insurance coverage does not extend to windows, only body.

$685 later I'm home and feel like a giant spikey dildo was forced up my ass. I know I didn't cause that damage.

Have you had a similar experience? Have you fough it? If so, what did you do?

never rent cars, they have so many fucking clauses to shaft you its unreal

I had to rent one for two days while my car was off the road, they have a policy that any dents or scratches and they automatically take £300 from your bank account to cover the cost.
I explained that the scratch may be slight and may only cost £50 to repair, if that was the case do they return £250 to me, apparently not, they keep the £300

also if someone hit the car which wasnt my fault they take the £300 and even when the other cars insurance fully re-imberses them for the repairs I still dont get my £300 back

When i took it back after two days he asked me would I hire again from them, I told him "never in a million years, you are a bunch of fucking conmen", he looked surprised. ???

I’ve been renting cars for 10 years now from Avis on a monthly basis and I never get the insurance.Cost is around 800 a month but I get unlimited mileage and can beat the shit out of them which is well worth it for me as I usually put on around 5k miles a month.Ive banged them up and cracked many windshields and never paid anything luckily my buddy is the manager there or else I would be paying 1200 a month and have to pay for any damages.

So I love rental cars and the unlimited mileage but if you don’t have a connection at the place it can be quite a hassle.

No but I did fuck one over.  I got a big suv.  No insurance since my credit card covers it.  I was in a parking lot and get back to notice a big dent in the bumper. Paint scraped off. I went to Napa Auto Parts.  Got some bondo and silver paint.  In about 10 minutes patched the area and drove around to let it dry. Dropped it off and they did an inspection and marked it as ok.  Haha. Fuck them.

pointless story, as your friend is the manager and gives you a free ride.

Go rent one from somewhere the manager doesnt know you and come and tell your story.

Probably best that you paid out of pocket, cause if you had put in a claim to your insurance, it probably would've cost you 3X that in the long run with increased premiums.

Got dropped off in BFE by the airport bus with fucking keys to a fucking car which wasn't fucking there.  All I wanted was four fucking wheels and a seat.

Probably different for cars but the local van hire place tells you they don’t give a fuck about small scrapes and scuffs just major damage/dints. The vans are fucking absolute heaps of shit though

Get an Amex Platinum, and use that to rent your cars. They cover any damages.

Haha just watched that episode a few days ago.

Pure Larry David neurosis...

I have these sorts of conversations all teh time with sales people, my wife just walks away.

I once bought a second hand car and after a couple weeks the clutch started slipping, I took it back as it had a 12 months warranty and the guy said the warranty didnt cover wear and tear or anything that broke.

Oh I said great, can you tell me what the warranty does cover, he looked at me for a minute and then started stuttering, I said, "fix the car mate"
They replaced the gearbox....

That was good of them.  Probably just needed a clutch adjustment.
