I remember when I was much younger, in my teens and early 20s, I wanted to visit that place and thought those guys must be the coolest of cool and actually did think Louie Simmons was a god himself. Now I watched that video and want to stay far away from a gym with a bunch of socially stunted, , bloated, greasy, and smelly psychos.

im still waiting for my bro-mance with the westside barbell gang

it seems to be something you can do when you get older and youve stopped caring for looks and you want to show that theres still bite in the old dog so you go for strength and then you just like to eat

so good age to start would be 60+

He's right around 70 give or take a year.

I'd expect to see a lot of Westside stuff in the next few months, because their big documentary is coming out next week -

There was a time when I was enamoured with Westside. Early in my powerlifting days.

Not anymore.

Their squats are a joke, their benches are retarded, their training is moronically overdone (and DEMANDS drug abuse), their use of support gear is paramount ...

Westside has done a great job ruining the sport of powerlifting.

"i've been on [anabolics] since 1970, and what is this now? 2016? i never been off."

IF you had any doubts that steroids are both safe and effective, here is your answer!

One would think at $1,500mnth Louie Simmons would get those retarded tattoos covered up or redone. Looks like an epileptic retard with Tourettes inked him up.

4 days training  (2 heavy, 2 "light") is overdoing it in your opinion?  Please elaborate.

Westside, or rather Louie, did bring the Russian/ eastern bloc  training methods to the US. This contribution seems to be somewhat taken for granted these days, when in fact, it was a real game changer for US lifters back when he began drawing western attention to these concepts. He may have stagnated somewhat, others may now be carrying the progressive torch - but he is an icon for sure.

not going to speak for fortress because he is a competitive powerlifter but any guys I have seen the last few years that I can tell are training "westside" style tend to take 5 fucking minutes to get ready to do some weird form of squats and deadlifts with weights that any lifter on gear could do 5-10 reps with by just taking it out of the rack and just pressing/squatting it

best way to describe it is like watching a dog getting ready to take a shit

and for the record, fortress does not remember but I have a photographic memory but I spottedf him a few sets on some slight decline benches back in the 90's at monster gym while he was at musclmag and watched one of my ex gf friends amanda spot him doing 4 plate per side squats for reps so just to point out he is a strong and probably just a shade more handsome than me. Just saying he knows his shit when it comes to the lifting sports

My only question about Louie and I don't mean this as a slight because the guy is smart for someone who does not have the traditional university education but is there some kind of sexual thing to all this? I am asking because I think of the wealthy schmoe factor in bodybuilding so I wonder if it exists in powerlifting because these guys all for a lack of a better word look like bears

I also want to add that I love Dave Tate's channel(although he needs to lighten up and take care of health first and cut the shit) but I always feel he is dying to say some kind of bombshell about westside but refrains from  it

Naw, the early Westside was just a simple little hole in the wall that was cobbled together by the members, mostly from Ohio. Powerlifting and Weightlifting used to filled with tiny little clubs like that, because commercial gyms didn't care for those styles of lifting. Louie also competed up till a few years ago, so it was more just a guy and his friends type thing.

Also the Westside sales pitch for training, equipment sales, etc.... is based on him being able to point to that board, and say he's got one of the best gyms in the World, so he actively recruits new lifters. This has been true the last decade and half, as the old crew ages off. He hooks you up with his knowledge and the gym, but you better be putting numbers up on that board or you're done.

As for why they all look like bears? That's just a part of Powerlifting, especially in the #275+ classes. I think that after a certain point most guys in that style of lifting figure they aren't going to be pretty boys, so they head toward the misfit look, which in turn, is what the bears like.

There's been lots of stories about Westside over the years, some not flattering, but I've never heard a schmoe angle about Louie.

Thanks, brother.

I might not know much, but I know heavy metal and I know weight training.

And for the record, I’ve hung/spoken with Louie (been to the gym’s previous location, even), and he’s always been friendly and straightforward. (I’ve even attended one of the crew’s Bob Evan’s outings.) Anyway, I mean no disrespect to him and the hard work his lifters do. However, I stand by what I say: To my way of thinking, the “Westside performance” is full of shoddy lifts and questionable standards.
