Just found this again online...after not being able to locate my original copy from the early 90's. Incredible interview from NPC NEWS magazine by Jim Manions son. Warrior does some very honest talking about his diet (tons of tuna and aminos) ....as well as daily full body high rep workouts. As well as his history of transitioning from competivive bodybuilding to wrestling. Best interview of the man.Very honest stuff I gather. The meat of the interview starts about 1/3rd down the page. Enjoy.

Interesting read thanks for that.

Warrior’s obsessiveness with his physique both made him successful and killed him.

GOOD READ....

Worked fine later?
Thanks!

A photo always helps ....
Passed away way too young!

Warrior’s obsessiveness with his physique both made him successful and killed him.
Especially considering his dad died young of the same thing. Nothing more genetic than heart disease.

His dad can never say he beat Hulk Hogan for the world title though.
Or that he legally changed his last name to Warrior.
Or that he stuck around and raised his son.

Ill read later but i was a hulkamaniac back then im drunk npw feel like shit hulk dropped the leg on him end of story

Love how he states he doesn’t train heavy and then a bit later in the interview says he’d behind-the-neck press 315 for 10.
Yeah, not heavy. ::)
I always preferred him earlier in his wrestling days (and when he first entered the WWF) when he was fuller and heavier.
He looked SO powerful and intimidating.
I have a match from that time period in which he just about breaks his opponent in two with a clothesline. The man wasn’t known to be too gentle. In part, likely due to his relative inexperience. His being so explosive and intense played a part, too, I’m sure.

LOL I was confused by that as well.
Wrestlers are always working.
-
Do steroids come up in the conversation? It's fairly obvious that he juiced. A genetic disposition to heart disease and steroid abuse is a bad mix.

I think he called himself then the Dingo Warrior.
And wasn’t there gossip that he really died from AIDS?
Btw, I could not open those links (I’m on an iPhone).
-
The author of that article clearly didn't know his wrestling history. Warrior was not the first BBer to turn pro 'rassler.
That would be Atlas or Superstar I believe. May have been others that competed and won but that is just off the top of my head.

Interesting read, good article.
For his training he said he used lighter weights and did about 20 reps and would focus on mainly one muscle group and then pump-set the rest of his body, not counting sets and reps but training instinctively.
And he would do about 10-15 minutes for abs each session and do lots of sets for his calves.
-
And wasn’t there gossip that he really died from AIDS?
No, heart disease. The night before he died he was on WWE TV, giving a HoF speech. He was beet red, sweating, barely could breathe.
I saw that and felt something was wrong, next AM he died...

Hey Bevo!!!
Did you get that surname of this stud?

true story which has been reported by several wrestlers, rick rude went up to the warrior after a smatch and told him he was working to stiff, and the warrior mouthed off back to him stating im the ultimate warrior i can do what i want, rick rude then basically whipped his ass. from what ive read rick rude was one of the legitly tough in real life.

Exaggeration. As usual.
Rude was legit tough, though, yeah. Not one with which to trifle.

Warrior was one-of-a-kind.
All the shittalk from his peers is pure jealousy.
The dude took the wrestling world by storm and made a lot of the other guys look like pathetic slobs. He’d run to the ring and just dominate with charisma and intensity.
Even his entrance music kicked ass.

He competed at least once in the early 1980's (at least that's when I remember seeing him in the magazines)
I think it was either a USA or the Nationals

Although Hulk did have a great physique even earlier.
But likes as Dave Boy Smith and the Warlord come to mind.
Texas Tornado was always a poor mans Warrior to me 🙂
Even Curt Hennig would've been labeled bodybuilder in the early 80's.

I grew up on Plano and Lewisville Texas and this guy was the king of North Texas Wrestling at that time (early 1980's)
I saw a few of his brothers around town (Denton and Lewisville)

were you ever at Monster Gym when those WWF guys showed up to train there in the nineties?
I was surprised at how some guys were more of an illusion size wise while some guys, like Undertaker and Brian Adams(Crush/Smash), and the road warriors were absolutely in either size and/or height
Biggest guys I sw with the whole package (mass Height, cuts etc) was Paul Orndorff at the Mintreal Forum when I was 15-16. he was just standing there watching the matches while eating chinese food out of a takeout box his massive arms and physique just buting out of a gold polo type shirt he was wearing

I remember long ago the WWE came through the gym that I was a member of in GA. Believe it or not the whole package (as you put it) out of all of them in person was Paul Roma. That dude had arms and a chest that was vascular beyond belief. Weird thing was he was never that jacked up on tv. All he did was light weight pumping sets the whole time too.
Saw Sid Vicious at a bar once and he was a monster in person. Nothing but shoulders and traps towering above everyone.
-
Warrior was wise. Strange concepts but wide.
Never liked his physique however , no density , all drugs imo.
-
The world was a more interesting place with him in it.
If you look at Hulkamania vs the Ultimate Warrior's philosophy/following, Ultimate Warrior was more intense, deeper, and less fluff. And I feel it was "real" and memorable.

He didn't look like an AIDS patient on Raw?
My memory has come back, it wasn’t AIDS it was HIV. I read somewhere at the time of his death that he had been previously kicked out of the WWE for testing positive for HIV. The WWE couldn’t have any wrestlers with HIV due to the risk of blood exchange.

He was decent. But not in the same class as Kerry.

I was a big fan when I was a kid, and even back then I remember the big rumor was he did G4P. Think it started in the Enquirer. My brother used to give me shit about it all the time.

I think there is a recent Sting YouTube interview where he talks about training with Warrior at Gold's in California back in the 80s and how Warrior competed in Georgia as well.

Around 1984. Plus cover photo of Ellington Darden book.

A few more.

I think the phenomenon attracted more "physique guys" to get involved, and others who were already in the business got more and bigger pushes.
Vince McMahon Jr. was always fond of big guys in his promotion early on, but there seemed to be a shift from "any" size to "quality" size after the success of WrestleMania. That's when he started "rewarding" the guys who were bodybuilder-big, and it prompted many wrestlers to get on (more) gear.
Side note about Hogan: He testified in court to using lots of Deca and Test in his early days. After the steroid trial in the 90's, he came off a lot of that and slimmed down. Apparently, WCW didn't have the same drug-testing policy, because Hogan re-gained a lot of size after going there; this time with previously unseen (for him) conditioning.

I believe you're right about Graham; at least, he was the most famous among the first.
As far as others who were active in both wrestling and bodybuilding, somebody posted footage on the Wrestling board of Ricky Steamboat and Jimmy Snuka competing in a North Carolina bb show from some time in the late-70's/early-80's.

I encountered a majority of the WWF stars of the day when I lifted at Gold’s, which was the precursor gym that existed just around the corner from the soon-to-be-built Powerhouse (where I met a great many more wrestlers and IFBB pros). Monster Gym became a thing years later, farther still from the area I describe (in the Greater Toronto Area).

According to Bret Hart, he says in his book the WWF had a doctor who provided testosterone to the wrestlers. They would all stand in a line and wait to get their drugs.

Yep.
That was Dr. George Zahorian III, who was busted by Federal prosecutors for said acts, and is now back to practicing as a urologist in Hershey, Pennsylvania and is affiliated with Holy Spirit-A Geisinger Affiliate.

Exactly. I absolutely believe his constant desire to remain very lean is a large reason why his body rebelled against him during the final days of his wrestling reign. One can see the deterioration. Then, of course, muscles tore or shortened and everything became stringy.
Too few consider just HOW unnatural it is for someone to have mountains of muscle but at the same time be particularly lean. It’s not how the human body likes to be.
As a general rule, humans tend to gain fat with muscle and lose muscle with fat loss. Hence ... anabolic drugs pre-contest.
It is hugely unnatural.

The exact same thing happened with Lex Luger. He looked so much more powerful early in his career than in the later years when he got that stringy look to him.

On October 19, 2007, Luger suffered a nerve impingement in his neck that led to temporary paralysis. He underwent intravenous antibiotic treatment and was expected to make a full recovery. Nearly a month after his spinal stroke, Luger was still in a quadriplegic state, having no movement in either his arms or legs.

Warrior dwarfing Arnie there
Arnold, fully gassed, is unquestionably the better competitive/stage bodybuilder; but just standing around, Warrior was WAY more physically imposing.
As example, Arnie’s shoulders were drooped and (relatively) slight. Warrior’s were wide and powerful. Plus, he was just a thicker-framed man.
Put it this way, at their peaks, Arnold, wearing Warrior’s wrestling getup, wouldn’t look half as awesome. More refined, sure.
Arnold was one of the all-time greatest, no doubt, but his was a baffling physique. Like, on stage, posing, it all “worked”.

Smaller joints are usually better for bodybuilding.
In his Encylopedia Arnold says people would often be surprised how relatively small his wrists were, he said he had "small bones, big muscles".

No homo but warrior aged well facially. He was more handsome in his later youtube video days than his younger days.
-
The last match he wrestled, in Spain I think... dude could barely walk. It was sad. Went 15 minutes or something. He was blown up to hell before he got in the ring. I honestly kept thinking he would croak at any second while I was watching it. Gasping for air.
Even the crowd was completely silent.

I always wondered if the wrestlers comprehended that it's enough to somewhat big and sign autographs... no need to destroy their legacy.
