In his prime, he used to sell out Madison Square Garden, 20,000 seats, once a month for several years. And a true tough guy in real life.
RIP

What do you mean "real life?"
You suggesting wrestling isnt real life?

Great numbers for an early wrestler, numbers that would've easily put him up there with the top powerlifters of the 1960's. #675 Deadlift, #565 Bench, #625 Squat, etc....

Here's a nice article on his life, and weightlifting from the 70's -

An old time bodybuilder once told me a story about how Roger Callard insulted Bruno who then demanded an apology or else a beating would be administered. Callard apologized.
-
Would run into him at restaurants. Always made time to talk to a fan. Great guy. Strong as hell in his youth
-
Thought his pecs kind of overpowered his shoulders.
Anyway,RIP. Didn't know he was still alive.

Roger Callard got a good verbal spancing there! If it wouldve come to blows he wouldve been fucked!

He was definitely built for the bench press, barrel chested to the max.

I learned about Bruno through Arnold's first book, the photo that was placed here

And no way was he drug free when compiling those numbers....Probably drug free later on though....
-
Big, tough dude.
RIP
The claimed lifts are horseshit, I’m certain.
-
I actually believe the lifts or at least close to them, with some caveats. They were never put together as a meet total, so not official. From what I remember, the bench was an exhibition gym type bench with the wide collar to collar grip that would be illegal now, but fine in the early days of lifting. So it probably was ugly by today's standard.
In early 1957 we can find an Odd Lift/Powerlifting contest report with the following numbers -
Bench 410, Squat 460, Curl 170. For those wondering, most older contests didn't use the deadlift, and instead went with the curl in its place.
Could the numbers jump from those 1957 ones to the ones claimed in later in the 1972 article? Perhaps, that's a lot of years, and Bruno did have some big fluctuations in size.
Just cause I kinda like the picture -
