Ford plans to stop selling sedans in North America
By Gerard Lye
Due to a lack of demand, Ford has announced it will remove all sedans from its product line-up for the North American market. This was revealed in the company’s first quarter financial results, where the Blue Oval secured a net income of USD1.7 billion in the first three months of 2018.
In the release, the company stated, “given declining consumer demand and product profitability, the company will not invest in next generations of traditional Ford sedans for North America.” This will see models such as the Fiesta, Fusion and Taurus slowly be phased out over the coming years.
Crossovers will continue to feature in Ford’s North American product range, along with the Mustang. The company is also looking to launch the crossover-like Focus Active next year, and will explore other possibilities that “combine the best attributes of cars and utilities, such as higher ride height, space and versatility.”

Is this a good move?

The Ford Active (shown above) and the For Mustang will be the only two cars sold in America.
Ford Fusion, gone, Ford Taurus, gone, Ford Focus, gone.
Is this good long term thinking?

Like 2-3 new vehicles being sold are like crossovers , so it makes sense.

Report: GM may eliminate up to six cars from lineup
Brent Snavely, Detroit Free Press
General Motors has put six of its cars under review. The company is considering plans to eliminate the Chevrolet Volt hybrid, the Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Impala and Chevrolet Sonic, according to Reuters.

The Malibu, Cruze, Charger, and Chrysler 300C may be the only domestic sedans sold in America very soon. I think the Charger and 300C's days are numbered too.

Doesn't make sense for GM to now leave the US car market. Soon it will be importing cars from China to sell here and Ford appears to have created an opening although I suspect Ford will change course at some point. The current CEO of Ford is an ugly bean counter with no appreciation for cars. Not sure what FCA will do.

cross overs rule the market
fyi when will they redo the mustang? it has been that same platform since 2005! ive owned 4 of this generation and want to see the total new look

New Honda Accord sales down 29% vs last year and it is a totally upgraded new model. Even the class leaders in sedan categories are losing volume in this segment.
Overall sedans have fallen out of favor nationwide. Only the strongest will survive. FCA already sh*tcanned the Dart and 200 sedans and Chrysler is down to a two nameplate brand with only the 300 and Pacifica.
Ford sedans ranked midpack at best. There is a well known problem with the auto trans in Festiva and Focus current gen models that is hurting their rep. The Taurus is riding on an ancient platform. The interior is cramped for a full size sedan and the platform feels aged inside and out.
The Fusion doesn’t stand up to Accord / Camry. You can practically steal a 2 year old low mile used Fusion compared to the cost of a new Fusion...huge depreciation. Ford pretty much has mailed it in with their sedans for quite a while.

Honda made a critical mistake launching the all new Accord....they weren’t competitive vs all new Camry in regards to early launch lease promos....the Accord depending on what part of the US it was advertised could be $80-125 more than the Camry per month 36 month lease payment....(LX vs LE trim.....apples to apples).
Leases account for a large % of new car “purchases”.
Honda has lost significant ground to Toyota.....the Accord design seems controversial and not universally loved either.
