These are not only never before seen pics – but they are VERY RARE – because I hardly ever take before show hotel room shots. These pics (I believe) are Wednesday evening before the 2001 Arnold Classic. This is Ronnie still flat (for Ronnie) and we, at this point, had done nothing with his water. The Arnold was one of my favorite looks of Ronnie’s – it may not have been his biggest look – he ended up around 247 on stage; but he had sick conditioning and bone dry. We pushed his carb loading about 90%, but the main thing I remembered about this show is how energetic and how great he felt. I even remember him telling me he had never felt like this before a show. If you remember that year – at prejudging – he literally ran out on stage.
Now, the reason these are rare – as I mentioned before – I seldom take hotel shots before the show when I’m at the event. I was always very confident in my abilities, but I also wanted to make the decisions based on what he looked like standing directly in front of me – taking in all factors, before making the next move. I never wanted to take pics, go back to the room to study them and “overthink” the process. I believe many times this is where the majority of athletes screw everything up! They go back – look at photos – overthink shit and now with social media they post photos and worry about everyone’s opinions/critiques – letting all this determine or at the very least play a factor in their next move.
Back in the day – it may have been a bit “old school” – but I still believe in that process 100%. Sometimes the simplest path leads you to the greatest results!

2001 Arnold Classic was one of his best looks ever.
Its hard to take a sure pick.
I would say 2003 Olympia or 1999 Olympia. But if i had to chose i would say 03 Olympia. That was the freakiest look ever in bb history!

Phil cares , he's emo and wants the adoration , Ronnie is beloved and respected because he was genuine and humble the opposite of Phil , Phil will beat Ronnie's record but he will never has the respect Ronnie commands.

I agree about Ronnie and the others but in terms of legacy and respect , Phil will NEVER come close to Ronnie in that terms. Ronnie is a train wreck and so are the others. I personally don't consider him to be arrogant. In 2012, when I saw him at the Arnold, I asked him if he felt he might be able to win 9x Sandows, given his age, with respect to Ronnie's age when he started winning [Phil was just under 32 when he became Mr. Olympia in 2011, whereas Ronnie was around 34.5 years old when he did].
Phil replied "I'm just taking it one show at a time, Matt."
That's right - Phil and I are on a first name basis. ;D
Or were - it's been around five years since we spoke last, as I stopped covering expos in 2014, when my kids became more interactive.
Anyway, I felt that Phil's statement was pretty realistic - and not at all arrogant.
ND, do you suppose the nonstop attacks online factor in to why Phil himself goes in attack mode? Because I think it does. He has people telling him he "looks like shit" all day...meanwhile he is 7x Mr. Olympia. Don't you think that would affect anyone, after a while?

Ive seen and talked with Phil a handful of times, he’s been into destination Dallas training last year, he’s an approachable guy, and we talked cars and football
Ronnie is as well, since he’s a local and not too far from where I am at

After watching these pics i kept wondering to myself why the hell Ronnie was this uberfreak.
1.He stayed of alcohol and drugs (recreational drugs i mean).
2.He lifted heavy like a man year round.
3.He stayed on a good bodybuilding diet year round.
4.He was coached by Chad Nicholls who learned his body by trial and error for many years.

He has elite genetics and response and blasted the shit out of gh and insulin during the late 90’s and early 2000’s
He didn’t stay away from alcohol, social drinker and loved the strip clubs, and church on sundays :D
Lifting heavy has resulted in 100’s of surgeries and in a wheelchair with painkillers
He didn’t stay on a bbing diet year round, he was actually careless and ate what he wanted and when he wanted
Al his muscles are atrophied
It was all worth it for 8 titles
