I've been doing a bodybuilding split for 18 months and had some awesome gains. However I feel I'm genetically prone to strength training and am looking to exploit my DNA. I have a friend doing Westside but from what I'm reading on the net I am leaning towards doing Starting Strength and milking the newbie gainz and then jumping into Westside or maybe even Strongman, particuarly Highlands training. Thoughts?

Try it all and figure out what works for you.

Go straight to astronaut training.
Do not pass GO.

As mentioned, try it all, and see what fits you. There is no "one size fits all" to programming. Some guys need volume, some guys break down on it. Pick one, give it a good 4-6 months of honest try, and go from there.
If it were me, I'd run a simpler routine like the Bill Starr/Starting Strength stuff or one of the old Hepburn routines first, then move into trying Westside type programming.
Also ditch the "good morning squat / low bar" and "GOMAD" advice that is common. The gallon of milk a day diet sucks for most people, and a beginner should try a few different styles of squat before locking it in.

Westside is fun though really is a program that should be ran with decent training partners as you'll be working up to a near max week in and week out. If you feel that strength is in your cards try running a old school traditional 12-16 week powerlifting program using either block periodization or linear periodization and see how you do at the end.

What about Stronglifts?

Would have to complete Starting Strength first

If you have decent genetics and work ethic any of those programs will work and get you stronger, spending much time deciding on which is just splitting hairs, favor the one that you find more fun and will stick with and have at it.

If you've been lifting for 18 months why would you need starting strength?
