What is the adequate amount of time to work out? I used to do long workouts, as I was always into high volume workouts. For example, back workouts used to take me 90 minutes (1.5 hours). I didnt necessarily think that more was better, I just enjoyed longer workouts. As of more recently, I switched to much shorter rests between sets, as well as reduced volume, thus making my workouts much shorter. Yesterday, my back workout took about 30-40 minutes. Does this really matter?

Nice work SF....back looks pretty good.
Incorporate some deadlifts to build thickness, seems to a bit lacking.
Also, do some hex bar DLs, then email your max and you weight to Flintstones so we can know how fast your are.

Length of workout doesn't dictate results. What dictates results is INTENSITY, INTENSITY, INTENSITY!!!!!!!

thats a 20 min back, 15 for the genetically elite... my personal workouts r around 10, which i consider leisurely, thanks to my constant relaxed state.

What if you're training for endurance?
-
I do not know the answer.
-
My weight training session are 30 minutes max.

I used to train 2.5 hrs in one workout but now I’m down to about an hour and a half.
-
Always always 55 minutes. That’s with a nice warm up, then hittingbthatbnody part
As hard as I can. Can’t go more than that, as I’m dripping sweat and exhausted. Sometimes my young trading partner, who’s all juiced up, taps out, can’t handle the pace. Works for me.

I used to train 2.5 hrs in 37 minutes

SF1900 your back is ok (not great). Decent thickness. Good for the gym or club, but not enough muscle to win a state level NPC show.

Also I would consider adding reverse grip barbell rows and nautilus pullovers

Your mom prefers 20 minutes but I usually give her 45.
-
25-30 minutes for me.
-
I usually train 6-7hrs per day 6 days per week not including cardio which is another hour per day, I take Sundays off.........for Church.

Does this really matter?
Most likely not.

I do not deadlift because of a past double inguinal hernia. :-\ :-\ :-\

2.5 hours is ridiculous. I cannot stay in the gym that long.

Wide Grip Chins: 6 sets
Close Grip Chins: 6 sets
Barbell Rows: 3-4 sets
Dumbbell Rows on incline bench: 3 sets
T-bar rows: 3 sets
Pullovers: 3-4 sets
Hyperextensions: 4 sets

There are other variables.Dorian succumbed to overtraining and ended up injuring himself with too much frequency and intensity. So it's not just workout volume.

I was likely taking longer rests between sets to check getbig. :D :D

Today I worked biceps and my workout only took me 20-25 minutes. I also did 25 minutes of cardio.

You can train hard or you can train long (i.e. >60 min), but you can't do both.

It’s not a joke thread.
I recently have reduced the length of my workouts.

The only way to know is to push each extreme for a long time.

Usually 3-4 hours
But that’s lifting, running, biking, and swimming all at once

i personally think that looks like overkill unless you're lifting very light weights to "tone up"
that's like 25+ sets for upper back. i think 12(max) intense sets would be ample and maybe 5 or 6 for lower
-
Less focus on length. More focus on tracking overall volume/load(no homo)

I fully agree with that. A pull, row, lower back and -optionally- an isolation exercise should be enough for a good back development.
For those who don't believe me, check Dorian's blood 'n guts.
-
Depends on the amount of venom in your bloodstream.
-
Doing deadlifts, rows, and pullups tonight. Maybe curls.
I do maybe ten sets for the main exercise, pyramid up down, low reps, medium reps, high reps... going by feel mostly.
Then the rest is just maybe 3 sets each, real quick.
1.5 hours, which includes 15-20 min to warm up on the bike.

I agree. I stated I liked longer workout, not because I thought I’d get much bigger, I just enjoyed working out. However, these days, I’m trying to incorporate shorter workouts.

Yeah, way overdone.
Reduce your chins sets down to two each. Weight the last set.
If you do barbell rows, you don't have to do dumbbell rows.
Make sure you are doing close-grip on the T Bar, otherwise you're hitting the same muscles as the barbell row.
Always do barbell rows. Alternate T Bar and dumbbell rows every other back workout.
Do barbell rows underhand (Yates Row)
Pullovers are nonsense.
Hyperextensions. Slow and smooth. Hold a plate for the last set.
Deadlift. No excuses.
-
I think most people can agree with "the period I tried the most, I was in the best shape"
-
On back day by the time I get to 3rd exercise. Second compound one I'm wasted.

I don't deadlift because of past hernia.

Understandable.
But just know that you won't get the best back you could possibly have without it.

I don’t currently deadlift because I haven’t built a new platform...still do stiff leg/Romainian 4 times a week though..haven’t did a full conventional deadlift in almost 6 months

I used to deadlift every back workout.
After a double inguinal hernia, didn’t seem worth the risk especially since I do not compete.

Deadlifts are not an exercise for high reps..I do warmups with 10..but once I get to 135lbs I don’t go above 3 reps

It's great cardio when running is not happening
-
My workouts normally last right around 1 hr and 15 mins.
55 mins average for the weights (one bodypart) and 20 mins of cardio.
Back might be:
Hyper or reverse hyper (4 sets)
Deadlift (couple of warmups), then (4 sets)
Some sort of row (4 sets)
Pulldowns or chins (4 sets)
Traps / shrugs (4 sets)
Cardio - Jog on treadmill (10 mins)
Spin bike - 10 mins.

Why???? so much unnecessary repetition...only two functions you need to worry about with training back 1) Shoulder extension ie. pulldowns, chins etc. and 2) Scapular depression/retraction ie. rows
-
When I was really into bodybuilding in my early 20s I used to do full-body or split workouts for 2 1/2 hours doing 50 sets or so total, 20-25 sets per bodypart with the splits.
Now I'm around 45 minutes to an hour doing much fewer sets and using much lighter weights.
Long workouts give you great work capacity as long as you don't take long rests.
Long rests are good for strength though.
Nobody worried about over-training in the "old days" or length of workouts.
All this crap today created by personal trainers people worry about is probably BS. People with toothpick bodies worried about their macros and if they should bulk, cut, or recomp and having 5% bodyfat so they can look like scrawny male models.

It really is a joke these days, never mind 17 year old getting on gear and getting shut down, comical...
