Title: Weed whacker spools and other assorted nightmares
Post by: Viking11 on June 10, 2018, 04:06:38 PM
So. I fired my gardening service last year and decided to man up and do my own yards. for the first time in about 4 years. Bought a decent lawn mower so no complaints there, but to edge and combat the weed problem that developed, I bought a weed  whacker. Was fun and chopped away, until the string ran out, went to put more string on the spool, that was a  diasaster on wheels, so bought a spool, and replaced it. But that has'nt worked great eiither, string got tangled deep and stopped feeding halfway through the spool. Ayone else have similiar experience, or easier way?

Buy a weed walker where you just put a 12” piece of string thru the end, much easier and quicker than dealing with the spool kind, fuck those things.

Weedwacker spools always get fouled up after a time.

I buy the string and rewind mine but it will get jammed up after a while and I have to unjam it.

The nature of the beast.  After you do it a few times you get the hang of it.

Still aggravating though.

Use Roundup...for real...you are not eating what you spray it on...and the glyphosate will kill the grass down to the dirt...just a narrow fine spray on the grass next to the fence, sidewalks and the like.

Weed whackers are a pain. Yes, I've had those same experiences with the spools. I only buy them already loaded. Got a Ryobi edger (the weed whacker is also Ryobi). No strings, just a mean looking blade that does a great job edging the lawn.

It's a good idea to hire out spring and fall clean-up. Not only does the crew do a good job in less than one days time, they haul everything away too.

I saw a YouTube video a couple of years back that really makes it easy... Unfortunatey I think the video has been taken down... Here's what to do. Cut a 6' pc of the cord, remove the spool cover on the wacker, and thread the cord through so you have equal amounts (3') hanging from each side. Now, replace the cover and twist it counter clockwise, while turning the spool itself clockwise. It will wind right up and perform as it should. I just did it again this weekend with glorious lawn care results.

They sell an adapter and stiff/stronger string that is much longer lasting. It's  so durable you can trim along a chain link fence and not break the string.
The string and adapter are sold in a package of pre-cut pieces at home Depot etc. Way, way better...

Buy the best string and don't run at full rpms.  You'll get much longer between reloads.

I have one of the big Stihls [brag].  It'll take big diameter line as well as solid blades.  Thicker line makes a difference to life expectancy too.  I also dig the handlebar grips, shoulder straps, and super skookum straight shaft.  Spend the extra dollars if you're going to spend much time with it.

Stopping to reload sucks but it's only because you're hot and bothered.  I find the Stihl head ok to work with.  I took down some rough, rough shit for my firebreaks last year.  If I was cutting frigging grass guess I'd reload about once a year.  If it's fences, etc, that kill your line then have better control, accept a few inches of shitty overgrowth, or install something you can trim against.  Otherwise it's not a problem that's going to go away.

In b4 "Hey was I supposed to be putting oil in the gas this whole time?"

Make an Italian lawn...slabs of concrete

Mulch, with drip fertigated rose beds, with weedblock fabric to cut way down on the maintenance.

Buy Stihl or some other good company weed whacker with enough power. You can also use attachments like this but use them wisely:

If you are just trimming the edges of regular grass where your mower can't get, you shouldn't be running into issues if you're mowing weekly.

But if you're talking about trimming heavy/high weed growth for the first time, you will run into some issues with the spool, especially if it's a shit brand.

What brand do you have?

Buy an Echo.
