They couldn't deviate too much from the book. Garland who did Ex Machina, already deviated enough.
As far as action---one attack by a mutant alligator with rows of teeth like a shark, and a mutated bear that rips out the voice box of its victims and uses that victims voice. It was a different spin on the whole alien sub genre of sci-fi

The bear was created for the movie, and from a man's perspective, that bear should have been killed bear after the first encounter.
