Post by: Natural_O on June 26, 2018, 06:57:50 AM
I interviewed 1979 Mr. California Larry Jackson on the Bodybuilding Legends Podcast this week. Larry talks about Old School Bodybuilding at Gold's Gym in the 1970's and '80's. Very interesting stuff!

Another great interview John!  Larry is the true definition of a bodybuilder. Too bad the sport has lost its innocence.

Thank you! Larry had some good stories about some of the old school bodybuilders at Gold's. I like that he mentioned Kal Szkalak because he was always one of my favorite bodybuilders.
The story about Craig Monson was unreal. That guy had to be a monster in person.

I agree with the Kal statement. He was not around for long but i remember he did beat Mike Mentzer.

I was lucky to see Kal compete at the 1978 Mr. Olympia in Columbus. He was super thick but also really ripped. His chest was striated and when he hit his most muscular poses, the crowd went nuts.

Cant wait to listwn to this John. I used to see Larry Jackson train for many years early in the morning at Golds, Venice. Hard training man. Nobody really knew his bodybuilding history. I did. Very quiet low key guy. Really looking forward to this. Thanks again !

That's where I met him. I was training with Phil Williams at 4am at Gold's Gym about a month ago and I met Larry there. He's still a big guy.

John, first off great interview with Larry, he had a lot of great info and no bs , just his beliefs.... if you get Craig Monson on there, make sure and watch some of the YouTube videos first, there is some good content by a channel called “Street gangs“, and an interview by Josh Bryant, among other things… That will give you some background and perhaps give you a little insight into more questions to ask him… Some Obscure stuff would be like the wealthy Spanish guy who footed the bill for his trip overseas to compete, that guy was supposedly one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s big financial backers too…he was mentioned in Arnold biography too.... He didn’t talk about that guys relation to Arnold on his other interview, but perhaps if you ask him if he knows anything about that, etc.… If it doesn’t pan out you don’t obviously have to include it in the interview....

OK, for sure! I'm going to check out that video. Larry mentioned that Craig had a video on YouTube. I just talked to Craig on the phone and we are supposed to do the interview next Tuesday. He's a super nice guy.

Monson is an incredibly nice guy. A gentle soul. Regardless of his far past.

Doesnt surprise me at all. Since he was the damn leader of that crew he was in he would probably never need to use any violence. Everybody includning the blind, death and mute would know that he should always be shown respect. When you have the power to kill other people in a blink but still acts calm, polite and respectfull to others he proves right there that hes a very good man.
