Title: Crossfit & Crossfitters - Your Opinion
Post by: stuntmovie on August 10, 2018, 09:29:56 AM
Every once in a while I hear adverse comments about Crossfit and the individuals who 'participate' within it.

But before competitive bodybuilding and muscle-growth became so damn popular, most gym or health club members were actually 'crossfitters' .... but the term 'crossfit' had not been invented yet.

So what's your opinion regarding Crossfit training and those crossfitters within it?

And when and where did the term 'crossfit' first get 'invented'?

And is it as popular as 'bodybuilding' appears to be today?

And is there a crossfit event that determines the best crossfitter in the world? Something comparable to today's IFBB Olympia?

And ... Are there any avid crossfitters on this Board?

Thanks ....

I think doing Olympic lifts is great.

Where Crossfit seems to go off the tracks is the methodology of their training, i.e. doing lifts as fast as you can for time, etc.

This does not fall in line with the way Olympic lifting is taught.

Can't deny it's entertaining to watch the Crossfit games, they are impressive athletes. Their documentaries on Netflix are good too. How they train that way I have no clue, 3 even 4 training sessions a day, compound lifts, running, swimming, biking, gymnastics. How they have the recovery, the energy stores to train that way boggles my mind. Yes I know they are on drugs, but you have tons of bodybuilders and juiced up gymrats that are too tired to even do fasted cardio. Not to mention their nutrition protocols aren't really anything scientific, like drinking Bcaa's all day, nutrient timing pre/during/post workout. If you look at what Rich Froning or Matt Fraser eats daily it's nothing really sophisticated. I know Fronning likes chocolate milk post workout, his breakfast is just a few eggs, oatmeal, and bacon, and like a burrito at night. And they don't seem to get injured either, crazy stuff.

I am sure they will be wrecks down the line... Look at oly lifters who trained using the Bulgarian methods their whole career.. They didn't emerge unscathed and there was a literal scrap heap of athletes who were broken by it... The guys who did make it to competition ended up mostly physical disasters in the mid to late 30s.

Yes.  It’s called the Crossfit Games; winners, one man and one woman, are declared “the fittest on earth.”  I think the Games just recently concluded in Madison, Wisconsin.  Not sure the prize $$$.

A couple years ago I saw a documentary about the CrossFit Games.  It looked to me like this was all the creation of Reebok.  That everything was all designed and planned, from the very beginning, by Reebok.

Interestingly, many years ago I heard Lee Priest tell a story that Reebok wanted to get into bodybuilding. That of course would’ve dramatically increased the prize money.  But the Weider’s got wind of it and shut Reebok out immediately.  This because, as anyone can see, the Weider’s didn’t want Reebok coming into their “turf.”

This^

The problem with Crossfit is over time your joints will pay the price.  No different than a weight lifter who goes heavy frequently. As Lee Haney once said “save the joints”. I see  a big boom
in knee and shoulder surgery coming in about 5-10 years because of crossfit.

It is a well know fact that after people began using the bench press widely in the 1960’s the incidence of shoulder injuries among weight trainers went up as a direct result.
