Title: 2018 Olympia - Should Phil Heath Retire or Make a Comeback?

Same thing Ronnie said in 2006. A year later, he was back and trying to get first place again until a humbling 4th put him out of that mindset and allowed him to move onto other things.

Phil will get over this and try one more time. If he loses again, then it's lights out for the competitive chapter of his life.

Ha ha! Philsulin will never get number 8  ;D

8 Olympia’s is only for true champions like Ronnie and Haney.

Maybe she meant he killed himself?

Phil is an emotional dude.

He's shaking his head while reading this thread right now in his unlit hotel room, the glare of his laptop blurring his already hazy vision from the sleeplessness and dehydration.

This was posted by the fiancée. She could be taking to herself.

I think the Phil soap opera has just begun. I do think that was his last show though. His Body just looks done. I think that was a large part of why he only competed once a year. You just get to a point after a while where your body burns out.

If my fiancée pulled a stunt like that regarding my career without my approval, we'd have a nice little talk.  Can't see Phil being ok with what she did. It's going to be a fun off season and fun future open Mr. Os.

Nah. There's much older and more shot physiques on stage like Dexter's, where he had to resort to oil in his arms, and they're still coming back for more. Phil has a few innings left in him, and even if his body did fall apart, his mind isn't going to get the memo, because these guys don't quit until they're completely flattened in the placings or when they get very sick or drop dead.

If he feels he could still improve(after so many years as a pro and steadily regressing each year)and make a comeback a la 2009 Cutler then he should stay. If not and relaying on others being off or having a gift from the judges- better retire before damaging his legacy even more by going down the ranks like Coleman in 2007 or Cutler in 2013.

Could he possibly up the dosage? And if he did, his midsection would get even worse.  Perhaps if he comes in lighter and really nails the conditioning he’d have a chance. I dunno, seems like he’s past his prime to me.

i think his best was 2011, he gets worse and worse each year since then like pretty much all of them, most peak about midway through their career and then it's just downhill

he'll come back like they all do to "prove something" to himself and the haters, but how often does that work out?

he should call it a career he has the money and sandows, he should still have his health too

he probably wants to win at least 9 to break the record but i don't think that will convince anybody he's better than ronnie so why bother?

In Phil's defense , he was off , it was close and he can still win again. Shawn wasn't eons better with that being said the old adage didn't apply , you have to KO the champ. Shawn won I think it's a fair call but he didn't outclass him he just accumulated more mandatories

For the most part, if you compare body parts, Phil has superior development.  His midsection and lack of conditioning got him.  If he can solve those two issues, he can win again and take the title back.  Most people wrote Jay off, then he came back in 2009 and wiped the floor with everyone.

From a career perspective he should have quit after 2 or 3rd Olympia, gone out on top, and focused on business. Instead he has left a legacy of a worsening physique, a champ who was beaten, and a person who has become increasingly bitter, with a diminished prospect of business success as a result.

True. Rhoden beats him on chest and abs. That's it. But the way he is put together with those wide shoulders and narrow waist gave such a superior overall presentation.

All Phil has to do is lose the gut and they will give it back to him. I'm not sure if it's possible. I'm not sure if it's a permanent condition where your ab muscles have stretched out causing a permanent distention. I had an umbilical that I ignored for almost a year as I didn't know what it was until it really stretched out my gut. After surgery, it tightened up a lot but the abs are permanently stretched out and distended.

That one flaw ruins everything and the IFBB gas gotten the message -- finally.

Yes, weak arms and back. It really opens up things for guys like Roelly, Brandon, Kulco ... a lot of other guys that are bigger but still have good lines. If Ramy doesn't get it together next year then I'd look to Roelly and Brandon.

Rhoden has a beautiful physique but not the freak factor that you'd expect from a Mr. O. More a classic physique type.

Still, he was better than Phil. I would have gone with Roelly. But his win is taking the sport in the right direction.

Also, in my opinion Phil still wins the BDB RLS. All Phil has to do is lose the bloated gut which will make him win the side poses against Rhoden. Bring back his conditioning he's known for and it's lights out for Rhoden or anyone else.

He certainly needs to lose the gut & sort out his condition
Probably down size / drop around 12/15 pounds.
Though His physique has been getting progressively worse
the last 3/4yrs he wasn't the best physique last year yet he
still won - This year he just looked to awful from the front to
over look it.

I don't understand all of the calls for retirement after they lose.  He will probably still place top 4-5 and could still win some other shows.  This is how these guys make money.  It is obvious health is not a factor, so why stop?  What is the price difference between 1st and 2nd or 3rd at the Olympia?  If he can still make a living, let him.  Who cares about a tarnished legacy.
Title: Re: Should Phil Heath Retire or Make a Comeback?
Post by: BB on September 17, 2018, 08:04:10 AM
He could comeback and win. The Olympia lineup is older and a bit weak, so it's more level than years past. That being said, I don't think Phil is the type of guy that could accept another loss. Also while there is a chance he could win, there is also the chance he could wind up 2 - 4th. Mentally that could wreck him a bit.

If he retires now he's a 7 time Mr. O that just got beat, no shame in that.

even there he's got something growing out of his belly button

condition ok though far from being dry & ripped.
