Title: I swore I would never do this again, but.....
Post by: Coach is Back! on September 29, 2018, 09:39:06 PM
I’m thinking of competing again. I’m literally within 12-15lbs of where I was when I competed last 10 years ago but much harder and have been training consistently since last year and dieting since April. Wife (a former pro) says I’m close. Shooting for Dec 15.

This is a big decision considering the trauma that’s been going on lately

Answer this question: in fifteen years when you reflect back on this period in your life, which would you regret—competing or not competing?? Do whichever you won’t regret.

Yeah you gotta give it a go. What's the worst thing that can happen. You end up posting on a bodybuilding board arguing with homos who've never seen the inside of a gym?

You stole my line.  I've fought in the ring, moved across the country, skydived, married, had kids, and killed many gophers using this approach to life.

1, is it likey to impact negatively on your health / life
If Yes is it worth the risk.
2, Do you just want to compete / get on stage again
If Yes is it worth it.
3, Or Do you have a Goal a contest you’re after winning
That would likely motivate you to a higher degree
Then it’s back to question 1.

Ultimately it’s your life & you’ll decide.
Not so sure asking a bunch of relative strangers is a good idea
As you know there is a lot of negativity on here & a good number
Of anti bodybuilding types ( never understand why they here ).

Nothing else much would change except my tightening up my diet and changing my training a little.

2, Do you just want to compete / get on stage again

Yes, like I said. I’m close

3, Or Do you have a Goal a contest you’re after winning

I personally wouldn’t do it. You’re a family man now. Hang up the thong and look jacked yet maintain your health. There’s nothing healthy about competing especially when you’re 40 or above

I honestly thought this would be a thread saying you’d leave the board forever if Kavanaugh doesn’t get to the SC. I then thought about how your name would be “Coach is Back...Again” once you returned.

That said, if you’re close to diet ready, and you can do it healthy, then go ahead and compete. Do a VLOG on your prep.

He's right.  I had forgotten about this and suggest you reconsider this.  Train for yourself and the world will be your dais.  The mirror never lies but the public will also be your mirror and I can assure you that your efforts will reflect well upon you.

Do it, COACH, but don't over-do it.

MEANING: Consider your health to be of prime importance even if it means a 2nd place trophy .... or less!

If you don't do it you'll probably regret it later.

I suggest you post one of the photos that Joe V. shot of you to show these GetBiggers what a dedicated and competitive bodybuilder looked like when competitive bodybuilders looked better without the bulk that they possess today.

I guess the best question to ask is, how is your overall health?

How is your heart doing?

How are your kidneys?

How is your liver?

Life is too short and competing in bodybuilding can lead to many health issues.

Everything is perfect. Again, and surprisingly, when I went to doctors after the TIA, I was sent for blood that day and everything was almost perfect with the exception of my LDL being 112. Since then my BP has been around 130/74.

I’ve never been an extremist when it comes to prep and have always aired on the side of caution

You would be better off training for a 5k and dropping to the middleweight range. I'm all for getting lean but no need to put your body under the stress of contest prep.

Are you still on an anticoagulant and BP meds?

This was serious so at first I thought you were kidding.

Well this just isn't going to do....   If you can't accomplish kidney failure and a gofundme page, then you are not trying hard enough.   Maybe there is a middle ground that can be reached....   let's say like 30 ugly ass tattoos all over your body.  That is doable....  that is what the "sport" requires from it's "athletes".

Same as the myth that squats are bad for your knees. If anything squats are good for your knees. One poorly designed study in the 60's said squats were bad for your knees and now it's spoken as fact.

To Joe. Yes, as we age we start deteriorating in body and mind. So it is natural to want to resurrect the good old days.

At 50 there really isn't anything to prove unless you can compete in open divisions.

The truth is all titles and feats are soon forgotten by everyone.

No homo here.

So tired of the myth that running is bad for one's knees.

Depends on the surface you are running on. If you run on hard surfaces and downhill then the knees take a battering.

Playing basketball on paved surfaces is bad as well.

When I was at UBC in the 1960s professors of PE insisted we were silly to do full squats. Then advocated doing squats

down to benches. It turns out the study that was done recruited young guys who played basketball on paved surfaces

and they already had damage to their knees. So when they did squats with weights they aggravated the damage.

We do know that weightlifters seldom have damaged knees and they do ballistic movements in deep squat positions.

It Australia the girls and young women play a game called netball. Usually it is played on hard surfaces. The result is

that most older women in Australia have knee problems and knee replacements are common in old age.

My knees are fine but I don't run down hill or anywhere else! Wear running shoes with impact protection. In the old

days we didn't have shoes like that.

Notice all the fat guys with no endurance saying running is bad for the knees.

My orthopaedic surgeon said "jogging" is a knee killer.  Jogging produces high impact he said.

Running however is ok because it does not produce high impact.

I used to run in my 20's and seeing marathon runners in their late 30's and 40's made me stop running.  Light to medium weight bodybuilding combined with low impact cardio keeps you looking good, feeling great and without a busted up broken down body.

guys over 200 lbs shouldn't run as an exercise activity... if it's part of your sport do it... when you're done with sports there are a lot of better ways to stay in shape...... just my humble opinion i could be wrong..JMHOICBW

do it
it will help you get older, and maybe even shorter clients
what im saying is that it will be good for your portfolio.  no brakes.  view it as an investment instead of a personal health challenge

There are machines a many gyms which replicate jogging, running and walking that are impact free.

Makes me wonder how ancient/ primitive Man survived having to run & hunt for food.
Maybe their Knees were stronger.

Or They just didn’t live to 40/50/60+

Yes - And that was mainly due to different diseases etc
Also that’s just a very small time frame.
Humans have been running around on this planet long before then.

Yes, you are totally correct. That was also due to high infant mortality which skewed the average age of death. For the most part humans have had the capacity to live to their 60's without advanced medicine. The invention and widespread use of soap was the largest contributor to a longer life, along with clean water. https://www.livescience.com/23989-human-life-span-jump-century.html

Thoughts?
For sure!
If you are contemplating to get another show in, do it (otherwise you gonna regret it for a long time). You doing all the training, dieting already so just dial in a little and of you go.
Good luck!

Running is ok.

It's the heavy impact from jogging that the doc said is bad.

This is one of the reasons why I’m thinking of it. I’m in Vegas right and for the last couple of days I’ve been training at The Lift Factory. For the first time I actually weighed myself without a shirt and shoes and weighed in at 206.1. Since April I’ve came down 28lbs with little size lost. Wife says do it but my ego says I’m not ready. In my head I’m dealing with the fact that due to my age, my leg size is down (sarcopenia) and it bothers me.

This is a problem for me too. My upper legs were proportionately at their largest when I was a teenager and rode horseback on a daily basis.

I agree. Why is this so? Why not commend/encourage folks rather than criticize them? Is criticism an easier action than praise? What are we afraid of? Is it being wrong?

At least you have a goal which is more than some folks have. Stick to it.

At your age coach I wouldn't be relying on blood tests to confirm good health. Get a CT scan done, see where your hearts at, taking anything over TRT can effect bloods negatively and at your age the body has lost forgiveness as it takes youth and time.
I would set yourself a goal how good a shape you can get in just doing TRT and low dose HGH, that way your goal is getting in your best possible shape without pushing the envelope health wise. Just a compromise. plenty of guys have had health issues while having good bloods.

Had all of this done last week and everything came back clear, but yeah, I hear what you're saying. Since April I've been strict on eating, dropped 28lbs and with the exception of some biceps tendonitis and Monday tearing my pec (slightly) training hasn't been this good in a long time and I'm documenting through video. IG, FB, Snap, etc

I agree. If someone is going to unnecessarily criticize then lie about "watching me train" then they should post a pic, video, etc to back their shit up, and even they do look like shit, I might make a smart ass remark but I'm not going to talk shit. But maybe thats why they don't post pics or vids because they know they look like shit.

Don't pay attention to all the haters.

Now that your all healthy and recovered from your mini-stroke there is no reason why you shouldn't go for it.
