It's actually 16 electric motors and 16 propellers. You are correct, this thing is draining the batteries quick. I think some kind of turbine power unit would be necessary to continually supply power to the motors.

All great inventions start out as a prototype or first generation. I've worked in R&D for years. The first flat panel TV came out of Xerox. It didn't look anything like the TV's of today. But that first effort led to a fantastic pace of development.
Let's just take a look at cell phones...
