Title: Who is on your Basketball Mount Rushmore?
Post by: Wiggs on November 02, 2018, 05:09:51 AM
Wilt Chamberlin
Larry Bird
Michael Jordan
Stephen Curry

This is mine. LeBron could replace someone depends on how his career ends but Curry changed the game. Basketball is different because of him. He does shit I've never seen and I still don't want to accept. LeBron is a monster no doubt but Curry will end up with like 7 rings and best shooter ever. The Most high certainly blessed him with his talent and hard work brought it out.

I gotta give it to Larry Bird. The original 3 point King and tough as bricks. A great clutch guy. All time I'm going with him, Curry or Jordan for clutch. Plus I'm giving Larry extra point for overcoming the odds and beating Hebrews. Could you imagine that today? Larry Legend.

4 is not enough in my opinion.  A lot of guys deserve to be there.

Abdul-Jabbar should be there for sure.

I wouldn't put Jordan on there and thats ok. The greatest president in history (Trump) having effectively beaten his own party and the democrats is not on rushmore. Jordan is the greatest and doesn't need to be on rushmore to validate that.

Rushmore is about presidents who crafted the America we know today, true forefathers. For that reason:

I'm good with these BUT Steph Curry????????????  Are you joking?  He's not even the best player on his own team.  He's probably more like the third best player on his team.  I'd take Klay before him.  Klay is a sick defender.

Steph Curry is a bold choice, but I gotta say I think you're right--he changed the game.  3 pointers used to be seen as a gimmick but he really cemented the notion that they are the way to win the game.  Young kids today are gonna model their game after him, looking to be a 3 point sharpshooter like Steph.

When Wiggs did a thread a few years ago about Steph Curry being better than Jordan, I thought he was nuts. But today Curry's accomplishments hold up.

Hes the best shooter of all time. When the warriors first got to the finals the consensus was you can't win a championship with a team based on taking jump shots...... Long story short Curry and his shooting has completely changed the game. The 3 is more important than ever, the midrange game is considered worthless.

Espn just had an article about Curry being discredited because of his demeanor. I also think his untraditional development, because it took him a few years to evolve and become a dominant player, hurts him. We've created this mythology that truly great players are dominating from the moment the step foot in the nba, Curry doesn't fit that narrative but it doesn't change the fact that hes an all time great.

Theres only a handful of players with 2 MVP's and 2 championships. Curry is on that legendary list.

When Durrant leaves and Golden State still wins a championship maybe then people will realize what Curry has done.

Curry is alot like kobe, in that he will look godlike on a november night in toronto but merely very good on a june finals day in la.Jordan actually got better in the playoffs and looked even more like an untouchable god.Curry is awesome in these regular season outburts, but lets see him do just half of it in the finals or win 1 finals mvp first.Dont be a prisoner of the moment.

Miller was great no question, and who knows how much better he would be in today's game, but let's not act like Curry is a scrub.

Larry Bird, Larry Bird, Larry Bird and Larry Bird.
Amazing. And amazing person.

When my Dad was dying in hospital in Boston in 1985, Larry called him on the phone, talked for 30 mins, he knew my Dad was a huge fan.
(2 of my uncles worked in the original Garden for 30 years, talked to Larry, he did it).

Not the best athletic player, his mind and hand skill, one of the best. (Like Brady).

If I had to add 3 more, Jordan, LeBron, Bill Russel...

Great point Wiggs

LeBron is an all-time great for sure but he's basically a really good version of other players who have come before him in terms of play style.  Curry is unique.

Kobe shot a little worse in the Finals (41% vs. 44% in both the regular season and the playoffs) but other than that it's hard to make a strong case that he was an appreciably worse player.  Jordan shooting % was also lower in the finals (48% vs. 50% regular season even if you include the two seasons on the Wizards where he shot shitty).

You guys keep saying Curry isn't the best player on his team. How many rings does Durant have without Curry? If Durant leaves, they will be fine they can find someone else. If Curry left, it's a different team. How you play defense changes. Curry spreads defenses to lengths never seen opening up opportunities for others. Curry is a threat anywhere on the court. People keep talking about his defense. It's not as if he's a liability. Curry is the most IMPORTANT player on his team.

The one thing that would have put Curry over Jordan is beat his record of 72-10 AND winning, but Lebron, Draymond and the refs ruined it.

The game isn't even a physical game anymore. It's like comparing 70s gridiron toothless football to this new no-tackle NFL.

NBA 2018...a bunch of running half the court back and forth and shooting 3s while flopping and crying for horrible calls to change the outcome of the game.

How good would Curry be against the Bad Boys? How many points would Dr. J have scored with nobody hacking him all day long?

The Mt. Rushmore includes Larry and Michael....the other two spots you could argue all day long but those two are an expression of basketball at its highest form during it's apex as a sport.

I love watching Curry, but he can't guard anyone.  also, the commissioner just admitted that the rules of the game were changed to favor the offense.

It's not a physical game anymore.  Basketball has changed a lot in recent years and it's not a change for the better.  It has degenerated into a glorified 3 point shooting contest.

Nobody would even know who Curry (or "king James" for that matter) is if he had to go against the likes of Robinson, Duncan, Ewing, Malone, Barkley, Rodman, Lambier, Kemp, Wilkins, Drexler, Oakley, shit.. even Grandmama and Anthony Mason would have crippled him

Curry is good for sure but overrated. The reason is that he is just in the right spot on the right team. Trade him to a shitty team like Orlando or Sacramento and that team is still shit. He ain’t gonna carry a team to the finals single handedly like LeBron.

Furthermore you can replace him with any other top point guard (Kylie, Damian, CP3 etc) and Golden State will be just as good.

Lastly, Curry should feel lucky he plays in an era where playing defense is not allowed and any contact is a foul. Would love to see what Isaiah Thomas or Jordan would have done to that thin high yellow boy. Woulda knocked him on his ass!

1. Its not his fault hes on the team that drafted him. You could say the same thing for Magic and Bird. Or Duncan or Kobe. They were all on well established teams.  Curry was drafted and developed the Warriors, he didn't sign there.

2. Do you mean like the Lakers are with Lebron? Those teams would be better maybe not champions but they wouldn't be garbage.

3. This is isn't true. CP3 with the loaded clippers and now with the Rockets couldn't beat the warriors, Lillard hasn't won anything with the Blazers and CJ McCulliam is an equal match for Klay.
Kyrie might be a good comparison but he can't stay healthy either.

4. No question it's a different league, and I dont think he could handle that beating physically but you can only play in your generation.

Its the same reason why he has no finals mvps.Warriors are superb frontrunners. When the defence gets tight, and more physical, he isnt the same player in the late postseason. Not really a knock on him because you can count on 1 hand players who actually improved in the playoffs.Jordan obviously heing the posterboy.

Yeah i'm not saying he is Jordan in terms of being a dominant force of will. I am saying when hes on his game hes at another level.

Again his game doesn't necessarily translate to any other era because he isn't built for the physicality (and that's true of anyone in today's league) but in today's game he is transcendent with 3 rings.

When he is on he is amazing. But the problem with the 3 point shot, its usually on or it isnt.Shots from 30 feet out require so much precison, that when your game is off, like steph has been many times in the finals, the 1/7 from 3 point lands are what you see.Whereas its much harder say for jordans turnaround 14 footer to be off, just by nature of it being an easier shot to make, plus with jordans vertical and skill, even in off nights he never sniffed anything like 1/7, 2/11 etc from that range. You live by the 3 and you die by the 3.unless in the warriors case you have the 3 best 3 point shooters, where 2 can be off for the night but just feed the others ones hot hand.

The NBA finals were on airing on tape delay prior to Bird and Magic's arrival. There was only 4 channels to choose from back then and the NBA was so out of favor its championship wasnt even being broadcast live.

The players you have on your Rushmore are all worthy but I think you have to include Bird and Magic just because they saved the NBA.

That said I'd go

Naismith
West
Bird/Magic
Jordan

Agreed. I'm kind of surprised that it's taken so long for the 3 point shot to be embraced they way that it finally has.  It's all or nothing now.

How rings do the Cavs have if Steph isn't injured  and is able to drive past Kevin Love?

Curry has averaged 25.4 ppg in 22 Finals games, compared to his regular season average of 25.8 ppg in the seasons in which he is an All-Star (2013/2014 - present) and his 26.1 ppg career average in the playoffs overall.  He has scored 20+ points in 68% of those Finals games and 30+ points in 27%.  He has never had a single-digit scoring game in the Finals unlike LeBron (although LeBron has played in way more games).  Not sure where this narrative that Curry "doesn't show up" in the Finals is coming from.  It is hard to make a compelling case that he is an appreciably worse player in the Finals than in any other setting.

Numbers mean nothing unless you watch the games.Jerry stackhouse averaged 29.7 point per game in 2001, michael jordan averaged 28.7 in 1998, was stackhouse better than Jordan? If you watched those finals games, curry was chucking at the end of the blowout wins to get his stats up, was also coming alive during games when his team had clearly already lost.In other words he was scoring at times when the pressure was off.Compare this to the regular season where he is sitting out in 4th quarters over and over because he’d already won his team the game in the first 3 quarters.

I've never seen a guy who hits shots from 30 and 40 feet as consistently as Curry.  It borders on witchcraft.

Dude is hitting over 50% from the field and three point range. Free throw is automatic. Dude is the best shooter ever by those stats alone.

Basketballs rules are very finicky , that boxing out a person sometimes its a foul sometimes not very gay, is it a foul or not to touch the offense or defense

Naismith
West
Bird/Magic
Jordan

I can't argue against Naismith, the literal father of basketball.

Updated

Naismith
Russel
Wilt
West

Jabbar is too modern.

I hope he slims down a little in the NBA and grows another couple inches.  If so he could be LeBron 2.0.

He size is prototypical of a NFL TE or DE.

My head is telling me he needs to be taller or lighter to play in the NBA but maybe Zion will be transcendent and excel just as he is built now.

I'm concerned that if he doesn't have a strong work ethic he's gonna keep gaining weight.  Kid is only 18.
