Gotta go with JMH FTW(https://i.gifer.com/4bMw.gif)
(James Marshall Hendrix)
Though Rory Gallagher is right up there too
According to Eric Clapton, Prince is the GOAT.
Clapton loved the film Purple Rain (when he was deep in drugs and booze), but when did he say Prince was the best?

The guys listed above are all rock guitarists.
Perhaps this thread should be titled: Best Rock Guitarist

Roy Clark is definitely underrated but check out Pepe Romero's version of Malaguena on yt. Tried to copy the link but it wouldn't load.
There is no one "best" there are many (MANY) greats, and each person has their favorite.
Rory is one of my favorites and one of the greatest. Ace is very good, far from the greatest though...
Zappa, Vai, Hlubek, Satriani, Hendrix, Beck, etc... So many...
prince was very good, him and jimi page are my two favorites+1 for Page!
Hendrix changed the way everyone played since. No one was doing what he was doing until afterwards.
When he went to england w/Chas chandler, Clapton, Page, Beck and all the rest turned up to see him at the
Clubs he was playing and were blown away.
Everyone copied Hendrix until Van Halen came along.
Then everyone copied Hendrix and Van Halen.
I don't think I could pick who I think is best but without Hendrix, guitar players would
Never be doing some of the things they do that Hendrix did first.
Some of my favorites are Gary Moore, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, and Eric Gales.
I used to go see Danny gatton once a week back in 1988/89 when I lived in Maryland.
He never played the song the same way twice and never really repeated himself.
He blew me away with something different every time I saw him and was amazing.
I have only found one recording that even comes close to showing what he used to do.
His records didn't showcase his virtuosity that way. There's a crappy live version on iTunes of him
Playing Harlem nocturne with tom principato that gives a small peek at what he would do.
If you want to hear something awesome you've probably never heard before, it's worth $1.29.
I like just about every player mentioned and trying to say who is best is almost impossible.
I find the Cruisin' Deuces version of Harlem Nocturne rather incredible. Double stops out the ying yang. That version is nice but this other live version is the only recording I found that shows a peek at how good he really was.

Joe Satriani is good tooagree
That version is nice but this other live version is the only recording I found that shows a peek at how good he really was.
The studio stuff is nothing but pro and I really respect that he's not going over the top and keeping everything musically tasteful but when he played live there was a spontaneity that he had that I don't get from the recordings. His chops and his ear meant you never knew what to expect from him in a good way.
On he surface he seems like a regular rockabilly guy but would play all these different things.
If you like gatton, seriously look up Harlem nocturne live with tom principato even just to hear the preview if you don't want buy it.

Amazing player.
lol at all the Hendrix dick sucking.
Guthrie Govan. Eddie Van Halen, Satrinai, Vai, John Patrucci, Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, Al Di Meola, etc...and about 100 other guitar players all destroy the ancient zombies mentioned so far.
These players are far past their prime and have been overshadowed by many other guitar players.
eg.
So many to choose.. David Gilmour... SRV.... Gary Moore... Randy Rhoads.. Brian May.. I could easily keep going.. I thought Ace Frehley was the best as a 10 year old kid. Now I know music

Damn!

Nobody in this thread has proven my original statement wrong. Ace smokes 'em all.
No one mentioned Steve Hackett yet? He’s only gotten better with age.Steve Howe, Robert Fripp .Prog Rock virtuoso's.
Alex Lifeson ....
Wes Montgomery if you are talking Jazz. I like George Benson, top 5 all-time.
Is Brian May any good? Serious question.
George Lynch from Dokken is fucking great
Yes.

Wonderful phrasing, not mindless runs up and down scales.Yup, He also built his own guitar in the early days of Queen. Where he got his signature sound.

Ritchie Blackmore (1969-1978)

John 5 (very underrated)
Dimebag Darrell (Pantera)
Top 5 HM's
Brian May (Queen)
Chris Degarmo (Queensyrche)
Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine)
Alex Lifeson (Rush)
Angus Young (ACDC)

Terry KathYeah forgot Terry Kath. Glen Campbell didn't realize or forgot he was such an accomplished player.
Glenn Campbell
lol at thinking Guitar = rock..
tons of good guitarist out there in every genre.
I don’t think anyone in this thread who actually knows guitar would suggest otherwise. Those of us with even a mild intellect know there can never be a “best” guitarist.Well put.
Some of us presenting our favourites do so with the understanding the preferences are merely reflections of the musical attributes that most appeal to our sensibilities.
I’m a total guitar fanboy and I recognize there being virtuosity in every style available to be played on the instrument. Having said this, my list of favourites exposes my personal tastes, naturally. But goddamn are there some absolute monsters in, say, country. Or nylon acoustic approaches. Whatever.
In your want to be read as enlightened, you’ve overstepped what’s actually mostly presented in this thread.

KISS was one of the least talented rock bands in history. Even they admit this.

Read up on John - 5 and asked a few guitar heads and they all said Kohn - 5 is a God
Still the best in the 70s!
I saw them live in 78. Great show.

Gotta throw some blues in the mix.
A lot of blues players can wail on the guitar. Please name the 30 instruments?
People say Prince is one of the best guitarists, but i don't think so.
I do however think he is once of the best musicians in history, he played over 30 instruments at an expert level and wrote tons of songs.

Come on...
Eddie Van Halen!

Funny you posted this, in my YouTube feed this morning was a Panama guitar isolated video. All you heard was Eddie playing the entire song.
Awesome rhythm work. Sounded like casual playing instead of the typical note, pluck precision in many songs today.
Ultimately the ‘best guitarist’ is really just someone picking a favourite band/style/image. People say Brian May is the best guitarist in the world. No.
8)
There are different parameters within which to rate a guitarist.FORTRESS,,,eddie and lukather were great friends, both played on billie jean'eddies lead'eddie vh was incredible every note, sound ,riff ,was genius.watch him at he end of last few yrs same passion play guitar and play live ,he got slower in body but mind and playing was still awesome.he loved the guitar he probably felt weird without it in hands..
Some guys are technical marvels who cannot creat anything worthwhile. There are cats who can copy others to a T. And some players are not technical monsters but can create/write memorable music and riffs.
The best of the best are monster technicians who are hugely creative and also have a unique voice in their style.
Like him or lump him, a cat like Edward was an extraordinarily rare breed of musician.
No one is “better” than Steve Lukather.
Just a couple examples.
Always amusing when non-musicians attempt to explain music, who's the best guitarist and so forth. It`s just opinions and what a person enjoys.
It`s just opinions and what a person enjoys.Where I grew up music lessons are part of a young person's development, as is learning several languages and playing tennis and golf.
Are you a musician?
