Title: Found an old pic with my skinny calves
Post by: pellius on November 22, 2018, 01:26:32 AM
I was in my early thirties here and have been training for nearly two decades -- including calves. I was pretty self-conscious at how thin my calves were and rarely wore short pants. I'm with my nephew here. The same one I mentioned a week or so ago that I trained legs with and is now a fireman. Times sure flies.

The second pic was taken yesterday at the gym.

Talk about improvement Pellenor!

I went through a nearly two year period when I became absolutely obsessed with my calves. A period I look back on with some consternation. The fact that a lower leg muscle could so dominate my purpose in life. Not only every waking hour but I would even dream about my calves.

It was not a healthy mental state to be in.

what was the secret to such improvement?

I wrote a whole exhaustive report describing every detail over on ironage.
It was in response to MaxRep regarding HIT training. He posted part of it in the training section on this board when I use to post as MTwain.

The main points were progression, find ways to increase the intensity, and allowing for full recovery. Always keeping in mind the principle I first learned from Author Jones: "As long as you keep working within your functional ability, doing things that are already easy; exercise will do little or nothing by way of increasing muscle size, strength, and functional ability."

And I did it all without any weights or machines at all. Just a door jam and a dictionary.

Pellius, do you have any pain or discomfort in your calves from the thick veins?  If so, what do you do to combat it?

No. Not in the very least. Why would it cause pain? You have veins just as big and as thick in your legs as well. They just are not as close to the surface of the skin as mine are. And it's not just body fat percentage. I have never been as low in bodyfat as a stage ready Jay Cutler but he hardly had any visible veins whatsoevery. Then you got a guy like Frank McGrath.

I vaguely remember reading parts of that thread around the time I first joined GB. In fact, I think I had it saved on the computer I owned at the time.

You performed everything in your socks or barefoot, right?

there was also this one guy on ironage who only did body weight calf raises , doing massive amounts of reps and developed freakishly big calves . . . from having very small calves before . . .

Tnation has a fairly recent article on the single leg body weight calf raise. I have zero calf development despite using calf machines my whole life. Bill Grant laughs at my calves. Tommy Hearns says, "Those are the smallest calves I've ever seen." I started using body weight single leg and finishing with two legs and if nothing else I could see my calves getting stronger. Many times with standing calf raise people don't realize they are unintentionally using a little thrust from unbent knees. Sometimes it's unavoidable in the later reps.

Really? That's interesting. It actually caused you pain. I know they do treatments to get rid of varicose veins. Arvilla here had that done. He said the surgery was painful but it was primarily for cosmetic reasons. What was your condition?

Exactly! You'll see tons of guys loading tons of weight on a calf machine. Literally pinning the stack then stacking plates on top of that and do those partial calf/partial leg press movement year after year and still have skinny calves. Then you get a ballet dancer that never touched a weight but does constant full contraction get great calves.

Arthur Jones stated that he specifically never developed a calf machine. He said there was no need for it. If properly done all you have to do is single leg standing calf raises. That's one calf lifting your whole bodyweight. If needed, he said you can hold a dumbbell for added resistance. I never needed added weight. My bodyweight was enough and I would just push up on the door jam for negative resistance.

I had the same surgery Arvilla had on both legs about 5 years apart.  The second one was easier as the tech gets better and better every year and they didn't even dope me up for it.  In and out in like 20 minutes. Took the supplement Diosmin for about a year afterwards as it's supposed to help with the rerouted circulation.  I still wear compression "Miracle Socks" bought on Amazon when working out or if I'm going to be on my feet for hours at a time to try to prevent them from ever coming back.

Not sure what that is?

If by "brother" you mean Black, I am technically an Octoroon.

Edit: I did look up MGTOW. No, I am not part of that movement. As I mentioned repeatedly over the years, I was married for seven years and currently been with my "Par'Mach'kai" for about eight years. I consider marriage a good thing, especially for men emotionally, but the evolving cultural environment makes it not a good deal. A strong family unit is something that I think is vitally important for a strong and good society but it is systematically being attacked, undermind, and diminished mercilessly by the Left.

"Always" eh? Let us look at the facts. In the over a decade that I've been here where I've posted dozens of pictures there have been exactly three in which I posted of which included a niece and nephew. Three. And all within the last couple of weeks. Yet from your perspective it seems like "always". Why is that? And do you have an issue with people posting pictures that feature their children, nieces, and nephews?

So many strange people here.

I can assure that my heel makes adequate contact with the ground. So much so that I have heel spurs on both heels.

If there is one constant to having big calves it's being grossly overweight. I have yet to see an obese fatty with small calves.

Being on your feet all day is neither natural or healthy. Blood just pools in your lower legs and the constant pressure on your feet, knees, and spine takes its toll. I really feel sorry for people that have jobs like that. A few years back I complained to the manager of my bank that the tellers should have stools to sit on. They should have to just stand there all day.
I show him studies on how harmful it was. He actually listened and got them stools.

I have not had the same success with the cashiers in the grocery store that I shop in.

When I had a job at a vitamin store that required me to stand by the register most of the time I made it a point to squat down regularly and bend my knees back and forth like I was doing a standing leg curl as well as stimulating the knee strike movement just to get circulation going.

You are no stranger to physical activity so I'm surprised to see you being such an advocate for a sedentary lifestyle.

You mention that being on one's feet isn't natural .. are you suggesting that we evolved to spend our time sitting or lying down?  I'm curious how you think we gathered or hunted our food without spending the majority of our day on our feet.

As for it being unhealthy, well most recent research contradicts your claims.  Sitting for long periods of time raises your risk of  becoming overweight and developing high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, & hyperlipidemia--ie: metabolic syndrome--as well as the risk of dying from cancer & cardiovascular disease.  Furthermore, its not clear if this effect can be countered by exercise.  Remaining active throughout the day is shown to be the best way to stay fit and in good health.

I would be interested to see the studies you have showing that standing is harmful to one's health.

My friend, you are completely misreading what I wrote. Standing virtually ALL the time, ALL day, is not good. Neither is sitting. How you come to the conclusion that because I believe that standing all the time is not healthy that therefore I advocate sitting all the time. A classic example of the logical fallacy, False Dichotomy/Black and White Fallacy. That if it's not this then it must be the opposite. (I remember the example given in logic class years ago: "So the soup is too cold? So I suppose you want it scalding hot?")

Nothing is good when taken to extremes. I don't know how in the world you got the notion that I advocated a sedentary lifestyle. It's amazing how people read something and just make something up when it was the opposite that was stated clearly. Did you just gloss over the part when I said that when I had a job that required standing that I did squats, standing leg curl motions, and knee ups constantly throughout the day to keep circulation in my legs going? I would also constantly stretch and my manager use to give me a hard time for putting my feet up on the counter to stretch out a  bit.

Also, I consider it a huge difference between just standing in place like a grocery cashier does and walking. Standing there is less circulation. Blood just pools in your legs with constant pressure on your feet, knees, and back. With walking, you do not have constant pressure on your feet. It's constantly off and on. And if you've ever been a hunter you are not walking constantly. There are a lot of periods where you are down on the ground stalking or a getting a layout of your surroundings.

I am going to pass on looking up the studies for you. Just using common sense it should be obvious that doing anything to the extreme is detrimental. No one who has had to live a life in a wheelchair ever gets varicose veins. They will have a host of other health issues but varicose veins will not be one of them.

Have you used that type of training on any other bodyparts since that time?

I remember your post on the old Iron Age forum as well. Its actually a sticky under the Training Q&A section on this forum.

Have you used that type of training on any other bodyparts since that time?

I have not. One thing about training calves is that it doesn't make as deep inroads on you systemic recovery system as other muscles do. I think when people talk about recovery they are concerned with individual muscle recovery which I believe is fairly quick. Arthur Jones also emphasized systemic recovery, not just individual muscle recovery -- recovery of the body as a whole. Your systemic recovery system is being taxed constantly and needs to constantly be replenished even if you don't work out, i.e., everyone needs to sleep. So because big muscles are not high on the priority list you have to make sure you are completely recovered physically before putting such demands as weight training on your body.

Unless I was completely free of obligations and could rest as much as I wanted, I don't think I'd be able to, my body wouldn't be able to endure, the type of training for my quads, chest, back, even shoulders that I did for my calves. Maybe biceps or triceps (not both) but there is another very important aspect that would present a barrier for me, and that is the mental aspect. The drive and willingness to push yourself to an insane level. Say, I had to start all over today with my calves today, I just couldn't do it. I just don't have it in me to put in that disturbingly obsessive drive that I had at that the time. When I started to see initial slight improvements that I never saw after a couple of decades of training I think something just snapped in me and I just became obsessed with my calves.

I consider it a dark period in my life.

That's an amazing transformation. Even more so from the before pic as you calves are being pushed out from them pressing against the couch you are on. I'm trying to imagine what they looked like just standing there without the aid of the couch flaring them out, I would imagine they were pretty straight up and down. In fact I don't think I've ever seen someone's calves change that drastically ever with one exception and you may have him beat.

Good eye. Yes, I was intentionally pressing them up against the couch. I was very self conscious of how skinny they were. I was constantly teased about it. They measured at about 13.5 inches. They are about 16.25 now but I got them as high as 17 inches.

You need to research heel spurs. It's not just nerve pain. There is an actual hook shaped bone spur in you heel.

It's  a bbing site. It would be useless without pics. The real reason is because you look like shirt. There pics of you all over the net. You just don't want them here because you won't  get a pass here being so out of shape.

Wrong again. It was from running barefoot on concrete up until my twenties.

You seem to have a very active and probing intellect with a thirst for knowledge. Maybe you should go back to school and get a real education  instead of relying on the internet  and broscience.  You spot a lot of nonsense.

Anybody on a bbing site in good shape would post a pic. That's  what bbing is about. Developing a good physique. You could easily  prove me wrong but you won't, because you can't. If you looked like go4it you would have posted a pic long ago. But you don't. Like most men past 30 yrs you have a flabby gut and most likely balding. So you sit hiding behind a computer criticizing to feel better about yourself.

I await your non answer with the cop out "meltdown" response, "Twaddle".

Everything you've said is incorrect.  You have no idea what I look like, or my age.

Fact - your statements are false.
Fact - I have zero pics of myself online.
Fact - you call yourself an elf.
Fact - you have pig nipples, and were stupid enough to post a picture of them.

Really? How much drugs were involved and how do you know?

Typical of someone who has been involved with bbing for many, many years but still looks like they never touched a weight in his life. Everybody  else are all on boat loads of drugs.

Always full of excuses for being such a failure. I swear, you have really devolved into such a bitter old man over the years.

Nice to see you still keep pics of me. Imagine if you had a fraction of the discipline that I do that you can one day be in such good shape as the picture you posted displays.

But you don't so you won't. You just have to be content posting pics of other people. You'll always be one of those guys who goes in a pool wearing a T-shirt. That's  if you even go anywhere near a pool of beach.

Your legs looked normal and fine then. Arnold trained very hard, and only with roids his calves were impressive.
In normal life you don't need to worry about your legs, unless there are injuries.

The majority of women appreciate shapely athletic legs, not overdone like in your veins everywhere calf photo

This obsession with muscle gives people the impression you are unable to accept your body or your body's natural limits

I think it's smarter and healthier if you start to see muscles as a means to a nicer life, not viewing muscles as a goal
But that's just my opinion

I train to be fit, I'm going skiing next week. Just an example, but such thing are a lot easier if I am well trained
No one cares what my legs look like   ;D

Muscles as a means to a nicer life?! Please elaborate how one is to achieve this impressive goal.

Bodybuilders care what others' legs look like. That is sufficient motivation to train them.

Again, how do you know all the drugs I need? It really bothers you that I am older than you are yet I am in so much better shape than you are. So you just dismiss it as all drugs. I've been on TRT only for the last six years and never broke the gram/week when I was more into bbing in my twenties. During my calf building phase, I was no longer bbing as such but was far more into Jiu-Jitsu competing at least once a month and having to keep my weight down to qualify for my class. If drugs were the secret to my calf progress then how do explain Dennis Wolf or Dexter Jackson or Johnnie Jackson?

You are just a jealous bitter old man that has never said anything positive on this board in years.

Hmm, a lot of thought went into that post. It is always an interesting question as to what motivates a person to do what they do. Of course, I didn't want to accept my body and how it developed naturally. I was so skinny and weak that I started exercising -- doing pull-ups, pushups, bodyweight squats, deadlifting buckets filled with gravel. By 12 years old I finally had access to a weight set and haven't stopped since. That would mean that I've been lifting weights consistently for 46 years.

There are a lot of things in my life, in everyone's life, that they don't want to accept. So do you just passively accept it or do you do something about it? If you want to be better don't you have to do better?

To say developing muscles as a way to a nice life, I am assuming you mean to increase the quality of your life, as oppose to muscles as a goal doesn't make much sense to me. What's the difference? I mean, why would you set a goal for muscles, or for anything for that matter, if it wasn't to serve some kind of purpose? Presumably, so you will feel better for it. That you feel it will increase the quality of your life. No one sets to achieve a goal to make their life worse off.

But again, you raise very interesting points. Why people do what they do. What is healthy and rational as opposed to obsessive and even crazy. I freely admitted that looking back it was a dark period in my life. Why I became so obsessed with a lower leg muscle. LOL! Calves. F-ing calves!

What we tell ourselves. What we think why we do what we do. It's not always so clear. I try to be introspective and attempt to step outside of myself but attempting to examine and determine my own motives objectively is by definition impossible.

"Throughout my career in emergency medicine I have been amazed at the human capacity for self-delusion; we are the only animal in nature that can lie to itself. We do it so well that the majority of people are totally unaware of what motivates their actions, most people do not act to achieve consciously named goals; rather, they act to placate subconscious psychological value conflicts."

PELLIUS, Where was that picture of you sitting on that rock taken?

I'm a water-dog (in the water every day) and was once familar with most every Oahu shore-line but I don't recall ever seeing big rocks like that.

At first I though that was Coconut Island in the background, but then again I think I thught wrong.

Where is that? Definitely the Kaneohe side on a windy day ??

Or is it remotely possible that it ain't Hawaii at all?

Well, I'll try to give you some landmarks and general location.

It is right near the intersection of Kahekili and Kamehameha right across from the Hygienics Store. Looking at the picture if the camera panned left you would see China Man's Hat. To the right is that huge property where they filmed "The Karate Kid".

Here's a pic of the Hygienics store and the second pic is one I just took a few minutes ago standing outside my garage looking at China Man's Hat. I live within walking distance of the picture of me on the rock so it should give you some idea. I'm at the end of a Culdesac.

God. Everything is about insecurity. I'm not a punk. If you attack me I'll attack you back. You might want to go through life like a doormat but not me.

Funny how you come at me when I am never the one to start shit. Maybe it should be these cowards that never would act like this in real life that should be targetted. It’s about Insecurity, it’s the damn internet like I said. If you were secure you wouldn’t give a fuck about a bunch of nobodies. You just laugh and move on, by being triggered with everything on here says more about you than all the others ruffling your feathers

This place has been like this for decades and you already know there are some on here that will just fuck with others, like some of these thin skinned pros like Levrone, and Jay (many more) that came here to post but couldn’t take all the shit cause they wanted to be worshipped, complained and and left. Others like Shawn Ray and Bobert would dish it but they seemed to not care and took all the shit talking in strides

That being said, I don’t have a problem with you or anyone on here, just my two cents

I always laugh to myself when people claim that they don't care what other people think. They care plenty. In fact, a lot of the time they care more about what strangers think of them than their own family or close friends. They'll walk around the house in their underwear, messed up hair,  unbathed, swear and curse; but they'll clean up real quick if they have to go to the grocery store and be seen by complete strangers.

Maybe when I was younger and in college, but after establishing a career, kids and family, not so much. I work out to keep in shape, not bber big at all but lean athletic shape. Believe me, some don’t care, but yes, a lot do, guess to me, it depends on what stage of life you are in. Some never grow out of it, each their own. I grew up in SoCal so all the fake ness was all around

Twaddle: "Ugh, mom, I am playing Word of Warcraft. Leave me the hell alone."
Mom: "But I made your favorite dish, for my little honey bunny."
Twaddle: "What is it?"
Mom: "Peanut butter and jelly."
Twaddle: "Did you leave the crust on?"
Mom: "Yes, I did, angel."
Twaddle: "Ugh, I hate you mom. You know I hate the crust. Go away and leave me alone. I am disowning you."
