Title: TOUGH GUY: THE BOB PROBERT STORY
Post by: indie-lad on November 27, 2018, 05:19:45 AM
You guys should check this out because it's going to be good!!

Bob Probert was one of my idols and he was a fan of my band GRIMLOCK from back in the day and we dedicated a song to him called 24 (the number on his jersey). At the end of this trailer when he says to his baby daughter "Who's King?" and she says back to him "Probert is King!" that's the lyrical sing along part of my song. His widow Dani Probert told me they still have my album and he loved it. It's an honor to hear her say that and especially seeing it in this movie. The man is an absolute legend.

He was awesome. He's wrongly labeled as a goon by too many, he actually had a very respectable goal output year to year before the decline set in. I remember seeing a piece on Kevin Stevens as well recently. Mario is a real friend is all I can say about that.

Hockey fighters are a unique breed, always had my faves growing up.
(Mainly Wensink, O'Reiily, Jonathan) but liked all the tough guys of the times (Broadstreet Bullies, Clark Gillies, etc)...

Had some real crazies in the 90's (Probert, Domi, Twist, etc).

Pure goons don't score nearly as many goals as he did...  How many pure goons get 29g and 398 pim in a season? If the guy kept his personal life in check he would have been somewhere in the mid 200s g wise. That is a unique weapon in ice hockey back in that era. Usually you could only send those guys out when you wanted a war. Before the wheels came off you could actually send probert out and get production so he was more applicable than most fighters...

They lost me with the rule changes and the up and down no contact style of hockey they play these days. Relativity-wise they probably cracked down harder on contact than the nba did. That's why I laugh when ppl say lebron is better than Jordan...

I know, these NBA, NFL and NHL guys today could not make it in yesteryear's pro sports unless they changed their style and toughened up a lot.  Even MLB players were much tougher in the 70-80's.  If you hit a homer on Nolan Ryan you were almost guaranteed to get drilled in the middle of the back the next time up to bat.  Today he would be fined and suspended until he was out of the league.  Ronnie Lott, Chuck Cecil, Jack Tatum and Steve Atwater wouldn't make it 1 week in the NFL without getting fined and suspended.  This is why there is so much scoring now as there is no physicality and therefore no fear of really getting hit.

They had to create the rules they have today in order to legally compete in most states.  The early UFC's were great though.  Also the Sabaki Challenge was awesome to watch in the early 90's as well.
