Media industry loses about 1,000 jobs as layoffs hit news organizations

New York (CNN Business)About a decade ago, traditional news organizations faced an emerging threat from a host of digital upstarts, outlets that provided the news immediately, online and for free. Today, a new threat seemingly looms over the entire industry, as one reckoning after another comes for both print and digital shops alike.
This week reaffirmed just how dire things have gotten within the industry, with about 1,000 jobs in media lost as the result of layoffs announced at BuzzFeed, HuffPost and Gannett — the nation's largest newspaper chain.
BuzzFeed announced Wednesday that it would lay off 15% of its workforce, or about 220 employees; Verizon announced it would cut 7% or approximately 800 jobs from its media division, which includes brands like HuffPost, AOL and Yahoo News; and Gannett slashed dozens of jobs at newspapers across the country.
The severity of the cuts at Gannett came to light through various media reports and as journalists who were laid off tweeted out the news. The Poynter Institute's website, which in part provides news coverage of the journalism industry, noted in a story that "the cuts were not minor" and affected well-known journalists, including a 1993 Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist.
What a shame....

Gee, hard to believe that there is some amount of excess capacity in "online media" content creators
Now we're going to have a shortage of "content" and damn...Gannet laid of "dozens"
no worries
they can all get awesome jobs in coal mines
Thanks to Trump all those jobs in coals mines are coming back...right?

Being fake news reporters like they are, they'd be better of getting into writing fantasy books about made up genders and equality.

There has to be a lot of redundancy considering they only run about 5 stories a day with the same wording and phrasing. How many people do you need to parrot the same thing everyday anyway? It's not like they add any intellectual content.
-
NICE! means they have to get real JOBS!
no one should get paid for sharing "opinions". FUCK THE MEDIA!
-
Funny thing is, if you look at the Tweets by the (former) staff of the Huffington Compost, many of them mention their experience at writing about gender-related issues as part of their resumes.
I hope Salon loses more of their anti-White staff too.

no - bricklayers and steel fixers along the southern border paid in Pesos
however I don't understand why so many posters minging about fake news outlets watch so much of them
They're fake news "writers", not smart enough to lay bricks or be a steel fixer. They're better off applying at Starbucks, however they have a strict anti-American/pro muzzie policy which may prevent them from being hired.

more bad news for for these layed off workers
seems unlikely that there will be any coal mining jobs given the fact (I know Truptards hate facts) that "more U.S. coal-fired power plants were shut in President Donald Trump’s first two years than were retired in the whole of Barack Obama’s first term"
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-coal/president-trump-cant-stop-u-s-coal-plants-from-retiring-idUSKCN1P80BY
oh well, I'm sure there are still plenty of jobs available at Russian troll farms and of course there are PLENTY of vacancies in the Trump Administration

You seem to be making lots of money, practice your socialist beliefs and give these people some money. You know, equality and stuff.

Having an opinion was never a value proposition until social media came along. Now we are awash in opinions of zero value instead of journalism and all are acting out the book Brave New World. Fordism is real.

Every time I contact the Oregonian to cancel my subscription, I let their representative talk me out of it. The damn thing costs $35. for five weeks. Deliveries are on Sunday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Sunday and Wednesday the paper is primarily ads. Friday and Saturday's papers are so thin they look like flyers. The subscription includes a daily digital version which is much easier to navigate.
