Back in the day, young people would to do apprenticeships and would be around adults. Now, they’re tucked away in college among other kids. When they come out they’re not very mature. It takes a few years in the workplace and experience in real life for them to grow up. Ironically, this could backfire in the long run. You do know that most of the top academic universities are PRIVATE right? ( Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc).
They get a lot of their research grant money from various corporations .
For example, a private corp provided a physics research grant that helped fund me my group in grad school.
Having said that, many of the "Internet Degree colleges" are a $$ sucking scam that rarely lead to a decent career .

That reluctance to change is more about institutional culture then any GOV regs.
Their is a lot of tedious useless procedure when trying to publish and produce academic work.
I have plenty of my own experiences with that , so I can't or won't defend the lack of efficiency in academia.

Now research is so much easier and faster but it still takes 4 years for a bachelor degree. It should be 1/2 that.
It’s incredibly inefficient. The same professors year after year give the same damn lecture. Meanwhile the students have to show up at a certain time in a specific place.Yes the government and also the colleges don't want any changes either as they are raking in billions plus the big cash college sports brings in. Anything that threatens the money gravy train will be resisted.
With first rate online learning programs, costs would plummet, kids would be to able to take part time or even full time jobs and get their degrees without accumulating ridiculous amounts of debt.

Higher educating has become another arm of/funded by govt. The results and teachings should not be surprising to anyone. Chairman Mao would be envious.They've got it set up to where you almost have to get the credentials to get a decent job even if you are going to school for years to learn mostly bullshit you will never use. Imagine telling an interviewer that you are self taught, you'd be laughed out of the building at most places even though someone motivated to learn on their own could very well be more qualified that someone who sat through 4 years of lectures.

For many professions you need the academic credential to open the door.
BUT, you won't stay employed for long if you're a lazy idiot.
My dad had only two years of technical college education .
He went to a Navy sponsored tech school for structural welding and hull engineering.
8 yrs in the Navy and 2 wars ( end of WWII and Korea) as a gunners mate on the Coral Sea.
He spent the next 35 years working on the hulls of nuclear subs .
I did a lot of formal graduate study in physics and could never do his job right.
My dad could actually build something amazing with his education and training.
All I can do is solve esoteric sounding problems and teach others the same.
Next to guys like him , I feel my education was/is pretty useless.
If I was younger I might try to learn something useful...but fuk it, I'm old and retired now. WTF :'(

I swear with the addition of Howard to Prime's and Straw's idiocy, it's getting harder and harder to even bother reading this section of the board. One thing I'll say for Straw is that he's at least bright enough to back away and stop posting in a thread when he realizes he might be off, or that he just got owned.
Howard and Prime on the other hand decide that more debate is needed by asking questions that literally have the answers provided or at least a suggestion for how to figure it out right in the damn posts they quote.
