They just failed to stop the wall in the House - he now has a 2 year political capital - nearly a mandate to finish what he started.
Both casual watchers of politics and centrists/independents just found out they have been lied to for 2 years by one side. Those that pay further attention will now see that side was doing exactly what they were accusing, the others will just tune out.
And, I wouldn't bet any money on your 2020 prognostication if I were you. More than 2 years of damage was done by the left and the press unto themselves.

What he does still have are 16 pending investigations and a Democratic Congress who will also spend the next two years investigating everything they can find out about him and his crime family
He also has a cloud over his administration due to the fact that the AG gave him a get out of jail free card on obstruction.

For once, I agree with Steve Bannon.
By calling out anyone who dared to question him, Trump will energize his core base.
Plus, he will get some lib snowflakes to melt down, maybe cry tears.
BUT, this taunting and threatening won't help him win over key independents in the comming 2020 election.
30% on the right were already with him and 30% on the liberal left were never voting for him.
By continuing to be self-riteous, he won't use his new surge of political capitol.
If Trump now said ; " The Mueller report now proves I wasn't in bed with Russia trying to fix the election.
I hope the country can now pull together and we can work on making healthcare better.
Plus, I'm hopeful that I can work with congress to pass some much needed infrastructure bills."
He could do that, but he won't. ::)

I knew that would bring you out of your vigil.
We'll see what he's polling soon after everybody gets word that the 95% negative press for 2 years was fake. A reckoning is coming that nearly guarantees a 2nd term, now IMO even if the economy goes down as I suspect it will.

Seriously now, why would an independent , (like me) switch and vote for Trump in 2020?
Trump and his supporters endlessly ridicule and insult anyone that's not 100% on board
When he wins, they act worse.
Independents like me , can't prevent the petty insults and ridiucle from Trump and his supporters
After that abuse, you'd have to be a fool to vote for Trump in 2020.
We picked up 40 seats in the house in 2018, and it will be worse in 2020.
You can't call yourself an independent and then say "we" picked up 40 seats in 2018. ::)

It's a brave person who registers as an independent or worse is unaffiliated. For one thing they cannot vote in closed primaries, which applies to Oregon.
