I’m 38, and according to a recent executive physical, am in good health. Cholesterol is a bit high, but no clogged arteries, cancer, teh AIDS etc. Anyway, I notice now and over the past few years that I can actually tell a difference from a physical and mental standpoint, when I eat well and exercise. It used to not matter, I could do what I want, go booze it up, eat like shit and I still felt normal. It’s been a gradual decline, but it seems since about 35 that my body needs more than it did. I always assumed this wouldn’t happen until 50 or so. Can any of you mid life getbiggers confirm? Thanks, hope alles güt.

This can be way eariler if you're more in tune with your body.
What food do you "consider as healthy/gives you the feeling of increased well being"?

I eat out for lunch everyday, sometimes breakfast and dinner. Mostly fast food or Mexican because I’m on the go. When I eat salad and chicken, I feel a bit better. Exercise is the best it seems, but with my back/shoulder issues I am a bit limited.
Check your PM.

same here, I’m about to turn 40 and my body has definitely fallen off as far as recovery and durability are concerned. Not really sure how to combat this.

Shouldn't happen if you train right, albeit with a bit of modification.
I would shit can the bodybuilding, train for strength, with empashis on conditioning and mobility. Lift heavy shit periodically, but not all the time. Forego some extra sets with weights for stretches and mobility.
38 is nothing man. How's your weight - not making fun - asking legit.

maybe fast food everyday isnt the right track to health and happiness.
just an idea

You started earlier , my turning point (decline) was really felt when I turned 42 ! I'm 45 (I started bodybuilding at 15) so despite the wear and tear I still could get away with heavy drinking and smoking cigars on weekends up until age 42 .....
WoooSHHHHHHHHHHHH STAY VINTAGE
-
Good morning-
I'm 48, been training forever, did a couple of shows, a few cycles ,the usual retarded shit we do as males...
I also noticed it around 35...However, I feel better now than I ever have, no aches/pains, low blood pressure, cholesterol etc...
I was around 220 my entire adult life(I'm a short 6', meaning 5'10 +++) ,from about 25-45...(In my 40's aches and pains were rampant)
Decided to stop fucking off and lost weight a few years ago-I wanted to see my abs again, and thought I needed to lose a solid 20 or so LBS(like we all do)
I didn't stop until I couldn't go anymore...I got down to 168 LBS, lost a total of 54 LBS start to finish, and never ever have felt better!
I can say with 100% certainty that the weight is the culprit for most everything as we get older. More energy, nothing hurts ,sleep better, BP lower, cholesterol lower, resting pulse lower, etc.
We all know the following, but it is worth pointing out...We put on a few lbs a year, and we get used to carrying it around...a few years go by, a few more lbs, a couple of missed workouts...next thing you know your 20-30 lbs overweight, but still look decent because we are athletic...However, the extra weight wreaks fucking havoc-
Thanks to some hair and being able to hold a conversation ( and some cabbage), I meet more females now than at any point in my life( isn't that the most important thing, or close to it?)-
Advise from K1RB? Lose weight!
-
Experiment with foods very high in polyphenols like carob powder in protein shakes, however seems to lower sex drive but better muscle recovery

Get into running. Start off slow and little by little get to the point where you can run an hour without stopping.
Then enter 5Ks. There’s tons of pussy at these races.

Oh boy, the 30s is nothing (sure, big difference from 20 but still), wait til you reach 45+, then you really feel the decline.
The first big decline i had was around 35, but the real big one i had at 45!
Once you reach 45+, you'd WISH you had the decline you had in your 30s lol! It sucks.

I’m 243 pounds but I’m 6’4 so I am not a total fat ass. Thing is, I got sick back in the fall and lost a bunch of weight and when I checked into the hospital I was 207. Once I got out I was so obsessed with putting weight back on it didn’t matter how. Hindsight is always 20/20 as my waist was tiny. I’m about the same as I was before, just softer in the midsection. In a shirt you’d never know, when I take it off (no homo) you’d be able to see the love handles. I was probably too heavy anyway as I feel my best in the 225-228 range.

I can’t, my back is jacked up. I ran a few half marathons and things like that but it was too taxing. I’m also married, but told my wife I don’t know why more single people don’t run. Lots of fit people there and there’s usually beer after so people are social. ;D

38 is old? ???
everything that I could do in my 20s, I could do until my mid 40s.

You eat shit and you don't do shit.
Thus you feel like shit.
What a surprise.
-
Good diet, regular exercise and TRT. If you still don't feel well you have shit genetics.

everything that I could do in my 20s, I could do until my mid 40s.
in a few years people will complain how they feel at 28 and talk about the lifts they could do at 20
-
I'm still waiting for these things to happen and hoping they never will.
Seriously, many young people ignore the side effects of poor nutrition and overindulgence. My 21 year old asthmatic grandson has a constant hacking cough, which is so bad at times, it makes him sick to his stomach. What does he do about it? He lights up another cigarette. He fixes his own meals. I have yet to see him eat anything fresh or not prepackaged, such as boxed mac and cheese, frozen pizza and Hungry Man frozen dinners, etc. Fresh fruit, vegetables of any kind, freshly cooked meats are not on his personal menu. Needless to say, he's not at all fit.

Irongrip, most importantly, would you consider yourself a muscle bear, being that height and weight?
A friend wants to know.

hold on, tesla was skinny all of his ac/dc life ;)
-
dude i've felt like total shit since my early 20s... consider yourself lucky!
-
I'm 39 I feel better than ever. I overtrained a bit too much in my 20's and early 30's by training in the gym and outrigging/surf skiing and i'm a lot better now not overdoing it. I'm also leaner as training too much made me crave too much sugar and hold a lot of water as stress. I'm 5'8' I competed a few times at 193, lowest I've gotten lately is 192. Trying to go lower but it gets to the point I have to eat or I can't sleep and i'm very lean at that weight so maybe that's my limit.

If i wasnt vegan my hair would be grey and id have arthrighteos

Not good - maybe try some more expensive organic restaurant or have your mom/wife make you some thin slice whole grain sandwhiches with ample eggs, greens and beef.
Fast food and Co. is shit.
pm is in me'hican... looks like the environment is shaping its inhabitants... >:(

Why does everyone who is in their late 30 and early 40's think they are old? You should be able to do 95% of what you could do in your early 20's both aerobically and strength wise. If you never pushed yourself in your early 20's you might find yourself hitting personal records in your early 40's. Sprinting speed goes down in your 40's no doubt. The big drop for most people happens around 55. This is when a guy chimes in who can't run around a block without passing out says he had his best deadlift at 55.
-
I started to feel like shit around 30,starting 250mg of test per week year round was the answer. In better shape at 35 than I ever was

How's you hematocrit? High red blood cell counts can result serious in heart conditions. My doctor tests for it. Because mine had become borderline high, he lowered my test dosage.
-
45 years old..
Herniated disk and other nagging injuries.. etc...
Been doing more cardio now and very light weights just for toning purposes.
Still have about 20lbs to loose. Been cutting back on fast-food.
Have noticed losing weight has helped me with my back problem as well as sleeping better at night.
-
All bodyweight. 45 years old is the critical decision point for any bodybuilder. Jacked and 200lbs+ and die early or trt with a Bruce Lee physique and still enjoy the lifestyle. We all have a small Hyundai compact engine for a heart. Just how the heart is made. Put that engine in a Ford F150 supercrew it lasts SIGNIFICANTLY less years than putting the engine in a dinky hybrid. Lifestyle vs longevity....will be part of bodybuilding forever. Its that little dirty secret of longevity no bodybuilder wants to accept......ITS BODYWEIGHT.

”My doctor” you’re a sheep. I’m at the 5 gallon mark with blood donation and my doctor wasn’t the one who told me to donate.

I'm 60 now and have lost most of my old pride about my body.
I still work out , but I couldn't care less about strict diets, or what others think .
I was 38 , when I last competed, so wtf, maybe I can relate to you?
Here's the deal : You're about to enter a new chapter in your physical life.
On the bad side, you peak physical shape is beyond you for good.
On the good side, you'll gradually become more concerned with basic health indicators (* cholesterol, BP, kidney and liver levels, etc).
If you deal with those on a moderate, consistent level, getting older should be a wonderful time.
You stop caring about silly competitive crap and enjoy life on YOUR terms.
Good luck and happy sailing ;)
Hope your mental health is in check, don’t want you following your fathers footsteps.
-

Since it can be a forewarning of a possible stroke or heart attack. You'd think more doctors would automatically include testing for it when doing labs.

Times change. There's a lot of ways to be big, not all of them are physical. Someone can be emotionally or intellectually big.

are you suggesting that getbig move away from bodybuilding and talk more about emotional and intellectual things :o

Absolutely not. However, the Gossip and Opinion forum is the most highly trafficked of all the forums on Getbig and a lot of what's posted in it has nothing to do with bodybuilding. The Political forum is the next most active forum and it has almost nothing to do with bodybuilding. The combined forums which directly relate to weight training related topics have comparatively very little traffic.

It makes sense when you see how many of our brethren have died since the inception of the forum.
I'd rather be lean, trim and healthy @ 50 than maintain the size and die early like nasser et al (pip :'( )

Same. I don't see the need to go balls to the wall anymore. Probably didn't need to in the first place, come to think of it. hahaha

The main way to "decrease" the aging process and staying healthy, is to decrease the amount of stress in your life.
Stress is probably the number one factor related to aging and a number of diseases.

i agree. i am around the corner from 36 and doing amazing
you already know what i am going to say
hot yoga many times a week
prolonged fasting (36 hours ideally 1x per week) i do not believe IF is that effective compared to prolonged fasting
-
I believe stress is the key factor. Keep stress to a minimum. Enjoy life, its a short time we have here and you should spend doing the things you enjoy. Its great to think about the future, but none of that is guaranteed.
