Matt one thing really puzzles me, Mike was my favourite bber, but he didn't seem to improve one bit over his 1991 win.
Am I mistaken?
His pecs and and traps looks awesome here, later his pecs were never this full.
His conditioning also looks great, so over the next 10 years why he didn't improve, with all those 5 pound meat eating, drug regimens and blue collar work ethic?
His last contest was in 2003 but he was mostly done in 2001...
He was only 24, very young pro, I know he has relatively
wide hips, short legs and high lats but still he had great potential.
His lack of improvement in a decade worth discussing...

You bring up interesting questions. I think Chris Cormier made a comment to the effect that Mike had nothing between the armpits. As in - impressive arms, delts, and calves - but lacked thickness elsewhere?
I agree with you about Mike's diet. For that sort of committment to eating, you would think he would have made improvements.
Supposedly, Mike's dad had similarly amazing calves.

V cool thanks 8)

Too bad that 2 of the class winners from this show died in their 40's
I remember watching this show on ESPN (or some cable channel) at the time and thought the bantamweight winner looked great. I also remember seeing Jim Welch at my gym at that time and later and he always looked really good

I was test judging at that show.

Mike was huge

Mike was huge
It looks like he was trying to get his valued arm back from your paw.
Mike was also known for his decent forearms, next to yours they seem nothing special!!!
-
I wonder if Mike Matarazzo near the end of his life regretted bodybuilding?

Mike was huge
you look huger than him

Nothing “between his armpits and knees”, yeah.

In my opinion, Mike had good quads

this is allegedly his last interview and he definitely sounds like he regretted it.
he doesn't have the "I would do it all over again" attitude of Ronnie Coleman

Mike said in that interview that his great grandfather died in his 90’s... I think that Mike’s dad lived to be nearly 80.
Mike died at 48.
Don’t give me the “genetics” crap. Steroids killed Mike. And Mike knew it.
Sociopaths like Dave Palumbo spend their life’s trying to convince people that steroids are safe drugs. And if a bodybuilder dies, Dave never blames steroids, he blames the death on “genetic” issues.
Dave you are a bullshit artist and a criminal and a liar. And you took every drug in the world and you could only win a junior NPC show at your best. In short: you sucked.
I recently watched a video where Dave blamed Dallas McCarver’s death on “genetic predisposition” bullshit. And he said that we will never know why “the universe” does stuff like that.
Yeah Dave, it wasn’t the steroids.. it was “the universe” ::)

I agree, pretty much
The abuse of steroids and every drug in the book def attributed to their early demise

his bis and calves were insane.

Did mike just claim natural when winning the 91 USA’s, he said he was on “nothing” ::)
Lairs all the way until he died

by that I assumed he meant very little compared to what guys take today
He also said his bloodwork was "excellent" except that the good cholesterol (HDL) was basically at zero for 5 years
How is that considered excellent
That should have been a huge flashing red warning sign for both him and his doctor

Yeah, the signs were all there, like many bbers he ignored them, and kept pushing, unfortunately for him it cost him his life
The real tragedy here was his two young boys
-
His chest was lacking but his arms, chest, delts, traps, forearms, abs had amazing flow in his most muscular pose.
If these shots are from 1991 he really didnt improve a bit later in his carreer...

Saw Mike on a daily basis for years- during his prime. Nobody, except MAYBE Dillet was wider shoulder tip to shoulder tip. Calves were stupid.
-
I remember watching those Weider tapes some 20 years ago. There was a part showing Mike shopping for groceries. He was wearing a sweater and looked wide as fuck pushing that cart down the aisle.

I think I remember his saying once the only person in the gym wider than he was, was Jim Quinn.

Unreal in person!
