$2400 for a bike?
$39 per month?
might be a good workout, but reminds of the 1980 Nordic track machines.
my dad used his all the time since he was old school and loved to cross country ski and that was why he loved that expensive piece of wood
i dont see the PELOTON being profitable year after year when the fade wears off?

Small sample size, but the 5 or so people I know that have them LOVE them.
Apparently the build quality is great, and $40 bucks a month isn't a barrier to entry.

not doubting the quality... just reminds of the 2019 Nordic trek ski system..

Why not just take spin class at the local gym save$$ ???
-
When they go out of business the bike's live class will show a blank screen on the video screen. Really, who is paying for a subscription at that cost for a video spin class?
-
Peloton is a cool idea and I can see the attractiveness of it.
No travel time
Privacy
Convenience
The upfront cost is high which is a negative but they have installment payment plans.
The $40/mo is doable. Same as joining a gym.

As a getbigger, I obviously have the funds to pay the full amount up front.

Getbiggers have a Peloton bike in every room in the house.
In addition they hire a on-the-spot personal trainer to shout encouragement, towel them off, and hand them a bottle of Gatorade to keep their electrolytes up.
After a session they have a personal masseuse to give them a rub-out.

One can only imagine what Vince Goodrum’s, CSN, MFT, HPP, CEO, house looks like in terms of gym equipment.

Spinning was really popular some years ago which is when Peloton came about.
Is spinning still popular? I know Gold has spinning classes.
If spinning falls out of favor them Peloton would take a big hit.

40 dollars per month for the bike
another 40 dollars to hire someone riding on it pretending to be me so i can post pics on instagram
thats 80 dollars per month >:(

The whole concept is not having to leave the house.
And 40 bucks a month isn't materially different from a gym membership, and in many cases, cheaper.

If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

Who knows? They were inspired by the likes of soul cycle and flywheel, who outlasted trend status.
The founder of the company has been making the rounds on business podcasts. One thing he said is that the company struggled to make the whole system really affordable at first, but they didn't get many sales. Their marketing breakthrough was raising their prices because it broadcast to their target audience that it wasn't a low quality experience. To gain traction in the market, they opened up pop up shops in high end areas.
The profit margin isn't in the bike sales, it's in the monthly fees. They made the bike because there was nothing on the market that could do what they wanted to do.

Yes, Peloton will eventually fade away- like every fitness fad before it. The investors and management will have made their fortunes too.
Riding a stationary bike gets boring no matter how many distractions you have. Right now Peloton is a craze. Then people will get bored.
The business model is to create new fads every 3-5 years. The smart people do that.

For that amount of money you could buy an outstanding road bike or mountain bike and go outside. In bad weather by an indoor roller.
I had an indoor exercise bike. After a short time I couldn't stand it. I also had a Nordic track ski machine. Same thing. I kind of wish I still had it because my running really took off using it. The only indoor cardio machine I can stand is a treadmill. Even with that I have to get outside.

Lol at the thought of financing an exercise bike

There's a camaraderie driven aspect that you're missing.
Riders become parts of online communities - they get texts, etc, team acknowledgment, encouragement from instructors, etc.
Not everyone does it the way you and I do - long training sessions alone all the time. Even I admit I get bored.

Let him know we have someone here who may be interested in the old clothes hanger, tell your buddy not to take this to Play It Again Sports, we can eliminate the middleman.
