I have a backyard ghetto ass pitbull.
No health problems, no special diet, no special shampoos etc.
These purebreds dogs have gotten out of control with their genetic problems and the initial cost of ownership even before factoring all the inevitable health problems.

We can agree

Reading the title I assumed this post would be about a different species

The Germans lost, thus forcing the tail between the legs submissive stature of the dog. The English let in too many short people from their empire and the Bassett hound was made to look funny after its popularity gained from Snowman’s pet in Smoky and The Bandit.

My 3 favorite dogs:
Bullmastiff
(http://cdn2-www.dogtime.com/assets/uploads/gallery/bullmastiff-dogs-and-puppies/bullmastiff-dogs-puppies-9.jpg)
Rottweiler
(http://myanimals.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Rottweiler.jpg)
Dobermann pinscher
(http://i.pinimg.com/originals/86/4a/2e/864a2ef76a1b0f02c2422092bd6fdf83.jpg)
These breeds have stood well through the test of time and cross breeding for the most part. My only issue with them is that they require a lot of exercise and us city dwellers have a hard time getting them the necessary exercise needed. But I love these dogs. Big, strong, protective, loving, playful and fun to run around with.

Great dogs. We had a Schutzhund trained "Warlock" Doberman for years. It seems the bigger the dog, the shorter the lifespan. Dammit... :'(
Police Dogs are trained in German. Most gangbangers don't speak English all that well, let alone German. ;D Unfortunately the words for "attack" and "heel" are similar, LOL!

AKC is still the gold standard. I used to be very interested in pure bred dogs as a child. Our dog was in obedience training and you could see practically every AKC breed of dog in that class, so I have experience with most breeds of dog. Our dogs were pure breds as well.
It comes down the individual breeders as well as selection of what dogs to breed.

Love the Doberman. That's going to be my next dog and I have a Dobby kennel just 2 miles from my house.

They are amazing dogs. Very loving with family, obedient and if a stranger even pretends to try and trespass into your property, they are on a deathwish. These dogs also have a ferocious bark. In the dead of night, you hear them go off and it's like the hounds of hell, downright scary.
The bullmastiff is on another level all together. While they are not too vicious looking, nor is their bark as ferocious as the Doberman, their sheer size/strength alone and aggressiveness is incredible. You want your kids to be well protected as they play in their backyard, let the bullmastiff run around with them.

Great choice! They can be pricey, look to pay around $1,500-$2,000 for pure breeds.

better to rescue a dog for a fraction of that price than pay some scummy breeder using animals for profit

I’m not going to the humane society for a retriever, setter or pointer for hunting. I’m going to a reputable breeder

I remember watching a movie as a kid, the Amazing Dobermans. In the 70's Dobermans were the pit bulls of the 90's. Everyone wanted one. When I enlisted as a dog handler in the early 80's they still had Dobermans. For a few reasons, the military stopped using them. The German Shepherd became dominant and then later the Belgian Shepherd or Malinois. I still think they look cool, but I am not a big fan of them.

do whatever you gotta do to shoot harmless birds

Buddy of mine had 3 nice Doberman dogs...10 years max life on all of them. That would be hard to deal with after having dogs that live much longer than that. Mutts and smaller breeds live longer usually but I get the appeal of the larger dogs.

I get what you're saying, but 10 years, vs 14 or 15 years.. it's still tough no matter what. My wife and I have had Yorkies (3) in the last 10 years, only 1 left, and she is 12. I kid her that my next pet is either going to be a McCaw Parrot or a Tortoise so I can be sure I outlive it. It's tough losing a member of the family, even if it's a dog

So what's the story with German Shepards?

I always get my dogs from a rescue shelter and give the shelter a decent donation $.
I want a pet and that dog needs a home. win/win.
My last dog was a shelter dog and she live for 14 years. Great dog.

Except now Hip Dysplasia in German Shepards is simply called "Breed Standard" with the AKC
Wish the UKC was more popular.... no clue what the AKC does to suppress them so much.

There are so many great dogs that get put down in shelters everyday. :'(
