RIP...Gene was only 51 and weighed 350 lbs. He benched 1000 lbs showing us all true humility in the process.
He was an amazing bencher, truly world class
He was a role model in the sport of Powerlifting. :'( :'( :'(

Who?
-
Seemed to be a nice guy, but 5' 9" and #350 isn't a combination for longevity :(.
-
Isn't this the guy who used that ridiculous suit? Didn't the suit give him 300 lbs extra?

Yes. 300-lb, or just over.

That sucks. BIP

There's bench pressing and there is shirt benching. Gene was the latter. But still one of the best at what he did.
-
Damn only 51 !!
Carrying 350+lbs of Lard & Muscle Not a Good Idea
Let alone Excess PED usage.
Never cared for them ridiculous bench shirts & the poundages
Hoisted - Though At 1000 pound Bench he must of been
Capable of over 600lbs without a shirt.

I remember the above picture going around. One of the big benchers from the heavily assisted early 2000s era. Before that I remember Anthony Clark was the guy that everybody was talking about, at least in mags that sold all that lifting gear...
-
Guy was always obese. That in combination with steroids. Yeah...

Nobody on Earth can bench 1000 pounds, and nobody ever will.
Lets keep it real here.
-
... 1000-pound bench he must (must’ve/have) been capable of over 600 lbs. without a shirt ...
Not necessarily.
A lot of these multi-ply bench blasters have seriously unproportional ability through the stroke of a press. Such focus on lifting in a shirt, using boards, etc. robs them of considerable performance development the first several inches off the chest.
If I recall, Gene himself said he’d never pressed, in training, more than 450 without a shirt. And he never would attempt it.
It’s very possible he might have been pinned under much less than six.

seems like whatever you can pop of the racks ( top 6-8 inches) is what you can bench with those contraptions.
i knew guys that could bench 6plates for 5 in a t-shirt before these crazy fake lifts.
-
Thank you Fortress, and thank you hazbin.
This stupid assisted lifting shit means nothing.

Then you knew some seriously strong “guys”.
Five hundred-and-eighty-five for five is in the top stratosphere of Elite pressers. Today.

yes, and i absolutely hate bullshit. if my partners fingers even grazed the bar i would not count the lift.
to vet my comment (probably used that wrong) do you recall strangler steve disalvo?

I’m not calling your integrity into question, my brother. I am merely painting with awe the incredible feats of some you have known.

i know, there are way too few of us old school guys left that can appreciate true strength.
Steve, Kazmeier and jeff everson all trained together at the university of wisconsin.
jeff was the weak one with a 560 raw pause bench.
disalvo, Kaz and ted arcidi all trained here in Calgary at the same gym in the early 90s

Crazy if true. Based on body weight alone, I would have no problem believing he could have hit 500 raw in contest form. 600+ is obviously quite elite, and how many guys ever hit over 700 raw? Have there even been six men who have done that?
My friend said he competed with a strongman who bench pressed 700 in a shirt, but could only bench 350 raw in contest.
I'm not sure if that means that proportionally, someone benching 500 raw could hit 1,000 in a shirt. 450 to 1000 seems extreme though.

I saw this guy get crushed by 1000 pounds at the Mr O night show, some years back. His suit ripped and the weight came down fast on him.

I didn't know that failed attempt was due to equipment failure. Thanks for sharing that.
I recall reading he damaged his spleen in that lift.
One of the announcer's asked if he was going to attempt the lift again, lol.

Well seems I could be wrong with thinking he could bench 600lbs raw.
Thanks Fortress & Hazbin For your input.
I’ve never bothered with being remotely interested in assisted shirt
Lifting, so know very little about what they’d bench without them on.
Next they’ll have a fork lift truck assisting them “Lift” ::) 5000+lbs
Totally fraudulent & pathetic endeavour shirted bench press ::)

Or they may install a giant spring onto someones ass so he can claim a 2000 pound squat! ;D

True - I’m a little surprised that neither has happened yet & Been Sanctioned By
Some Dubious Federation.
;D
-
I can't respect benching 450 to a grand with a shirt.
If Eric Spoto hit 1100 with a shirt, it would mean something to me.
-
Rychlak didn't bench more than 500 raw. So 500 lbs of his lift was assisted from the bottom by his bench shirts.
When he does his equiped heavy lifts you can see his entire ribcage flattening out from the huge pressure from the shirt (probably about 500lbs pressure on his ribcage.)
-
Never understood how assisted lifting became popular in the first place. You'd think there just wouldn't be an audience for it.
-
Luckily raw Powerlifting is back in popularity.
There's nothing like the old-school guys (MacDonald, Teddy, etc).
-
that's sad, ive done a few rps meets. the fed is super casual but the trophies are so ridiculous they turn into a conversation starter for anyone visiting my apt

Here is a good example of how fucking stupid this "bench shirt" shit is. Both vids below are Jake Anderson from Westside Barbell. Both were taken in 2010. The first vid is supposed to be his first 500 raw press. The spotter is pulling on the bar. I'd say he's probably good for 455 - 475 in a real competition. The second video is him attempting 750 with a bench shirt. The shirt rips, and the weight completely crushes him (serves him right). In Jake's case, I'd say his shirt was adding 300 lbs.

that was always my reply to assisted bench braggers....
well i can deadlift 1300 with a block and tackle (look it up young guys)

i was at the Arnold one year, and a guy was attempting a 750lb bench.
he couldn't get it to touch his chest so he failed his first attempt.
tried again and failed his second attempt for the same reason.
third attempt he asked for 800lbs. he touched his chest and made the lift.
so, at the point 2 inches above his chest; it wasn't 750, it wasn't even zero pounds -
it was less than zero pounds as he couldn't even pull the bar down to touch his chest.
when you see them benching with 6-8 inches of boards on their chest they so no point training that
range as it is 'free' because of the shirt. (not that it is even a shirt anymore.

Never understood how assisted lifting became popular in the first place. You'd think there just wouldn't be an audience for it.
a bit of a boiling frog situation.
first shirts were just to hold the shoulders in a power position.
then people realized if you thickened them you could lift more.
gradual increases up to today's madness.
same with kids styles. they became so extreme kids are now getting their peckers cut off
and buying fake tits (males) to get attention.

WTF - That’s Just Ridiculous.
750lbs and cant touch his chest. !!
What a load of Bollocks.
-
I remember seeing Gene attempt a world record attempt at the 2005 Mr. Olympia...
-
Why not just lift what you`re capable of ?
I don`t get it personally.

Good grief. Can't the tensile strength of the material of the shirt be established somehow?

Last I checked , the raw ( no bench shirt) record was 738 lbs .
https://www.topendsports.com/testing/records/bench-press.htm
Wearing one of those straight jacket bench shirts , it's around 1100 lbs
( 1103 lbs)
https://www.chron.com/neighborhood/humble/news/article/Meeker-sets-world-record-with-1-102-lbs-bench-9525980.php
Using basic math the difference is 1103 - 738 = 365 lbs
So , about 1/3 ( a third ) of the bench shirt lift is due to the shirt.
That's NOT assistance, it's a substantial part of the lift.
What's next? Try benching a ton ( 2000 lbs) by bouncing the bar off a truck shock strapped on your chest? LOL :D
pretty retarded logic there for a physics teacher
the 738 lifter(russian monster dont remember name) has never tried shirted lifts. If he did that seriously you would probably see 1200+lift. But why would he bother everyone just thinks it's fake BS, which it is.

This is an incredible press. Good form, none of that 3" range of motion shit. Just a good solid press. Rychlak would never come close to this.

Kirill Sarychev
738. Raw. With a perfect technique and legit pause.
Let that sink in.
Only five men have ever broken seven. Five. And a couple of these with hugely questionable lifts (no pause, compression-press, etc.).
Kirill is a true freak among freaks.
P.S. Scott Mendelson held both the raw (715) AND geared press records at the same time. The former stood for about nine years. Then Eric Spotto set a new record with a 722.
Both Scott and Eric annihilated themselves trying to best their, well, best.
Then along came the monolithic Russian.
Kirill.
Simply otherworldly.
Hail.

Can't apply math in a linear fashion to explain the difference in those two lifts.
