Title: Has anybody here had or know someone who has had knee replacement surgery?
Post by: pellius on August 04, 2019, 01:39:50 AM
If so, how did it go? What are the limitations? Are you still able to train with weights?

Can’t speak to training limitations afterwards but the folks I know that had it done all say the same thing.
Do the rehab completely

I know a few guys who have had both knees one is 43 and one is 47 and one 65 and a couple others. They say it is great. They walk great now where as before they walked very badly. No more pain, they can work pain free.Seems like a great thing for each of them.

Have a good friend who is 41 waiting to have one done in September.very excited.he hobbled like crazy cause he has been a horseshoer since he was 16 and it’s killed his knees.

Talk to a good surgeon about it.

Also a good physical therapist.

Yes many people.  One hs buddy recently had both done staggered three months apart and is doing well.

You're in shape so that will help your rehab move along quickly.

Are they able to train with weights. I've read that you should avoid weight training because it will speed up the wear and tear and that you can't sit on the ground or kneel. Even body weight squats will be difficult.

Yes one is doing pretty aggressive cross training. I also saw him rehabbing with weights which he was encouraged to do.  A recent study showed 96% of commonly used knee replacements still functioning after 20 years and they are better now.

People I know that have needed them are very active and that's why they had them. They continue to be very active including those with hips.

I've known three people that had them done and the one thing they all said is they wished they had done it years earlier.

None of them are doing any athletic pursuits but that was never their thing to begin with.  They were all overweight and didn't exercise--two things that likely compounded their issues IMO.  Anyways, they are happy now because they are able to go on walks, do housework, and live their lives without having to ice their knees and eat bottles of painkillers.

Pellius I assume you are in the market for a knee replacement?  Is this from osteoarthritis or some old accident?

Check out stem cell injections first.  Joe Rogan talks about having them on his shoulder instead of replacement surgery.

I know several folks that have had this procedure, including some family members. They all sing its praises.  Good luck with your choice, brother!

Cross Fit? I thought any kind of impact training is out of the question. Even jogging.

Good read. That's pretty much what I do now. I pre-exhaust with light high rep leg extensions then jump of whatever leg press is open (Hammer, Hoist, standard 45 degree press) then follow that with body weight squats but I hold onto something so I can sit back more without falling back as this puts less strain on the joints.

I had surgeries on both knees back in 1995 and tore up the cartilage and meniscus pretty bad. I was told that over 90% of the cartilage was removed. My knees have always been
an issue after the surgeries so I knew this day would come.

That's what I'm most worried about. What life will seem so empty and meaningless if I can't fight homeless bums that are eyeing my QP with cheese.

I did. Also that PRP(?) thing that Levrone talked about. My brother, who's a competitive biker did something called AminoFix and he claimed it helped him tremendously. But I don't have anything left on my left knee which is always swollen and sore. I have to take advil the night before doing legs as that helps a lot but it's only once a week so I don't feel I'm abusing the meds.

I'm also scheduled to get knee replacement one month after my left but I'm not fully committed to it.

That's good to hear. I know two people that had them and both were disappointed. Mostly concerned with the loss of flexibility.

Boxing skills will take you a long way.

Also you can use your cane or walker as a weapon.

Seriously try this and see if it helps.  I haven't tried it (don't have a high table to sit on) but let me know if it helps.
