I've zoned out a few times going 35 in a 55.

That’s when you pump your breaks.

In NJ it's illegal to drive continuously in a the left passing lane. You always get that one idiot who thinks he owns the fast lane and drives slow in it for miles.
-
Too slow or too fast disrupts the flow of traffic.

If someone is tail gating get out of the way. You are not the regulator of the speed limit. Especially if you are in the left passing lane.

No, but the state is the regulator of the speed limit and if the speed limit is 65 and you're doing 65 in the left lane, then you're obeying the traffic law and the person going faster and tailgating you, is breaking the law. Fact is, if I am in the left lane going 75-80 in a 65 and still getting tail gaited, then I will not get out of the way.

If someone is tailgaiting me and I'm going at the speed limit and there's nowhere to pass....I go slower.
The speed limit is there for a reason, as are other rules, if everyone did whatever they wanted and think the rules don't somehow apply to them we would live in chaos.

Somewhat related,
I can't stand when there is a four way stop sign and another car gets to the adjacent stop sign WAY before you yet insists on waving you along. You realize he got to the stop sign first, so you wave him along, It becomes some sort of pissing contest with neither car willing to go first. Both start screaming in their car and waving their hands saying "You go ….go ahead..." and waving each other along. Look, the rule is if you got to the four way stop first, you go first. Don't do me any favors. It's simply confusing when you don't follow the rules of the road by trying to be extra polite, or just controlling, demanding others go before you, whatever it is just follow the rules of the road and we'll all will get where we have to go faster. Old people are notorious for this. It's time to merge, they wave others along even through they got there first. Same with 4 way stop signs. It's just fucking confusing and dangerous. It's not safe, it's not polite. Whether stop sign or merging, if you get there first, GO FIRST. STOP WAVING ME ALONG!!!!!!

The speed limit is the LIMIT. MAXIMUM speed.
Doesn’t mean hitting that mark is an always-type requirement.
Me, I’m often told I drive too slow. However, I never hog right lanes, and, in 34 years of driving, have never had an accident.
I’ve also never driven without a pre-selected CD (cassette in the days of yesteryear) tagging along. Never. If I’m driving, I am jamming.
It’s my absolute favourite listening environment.
If you are in a hurry because your time-management skills blow ass, go around Fortress and leave the boy to ROCK.
-
While slow drivers are annoying, intentional tailgaters are also assholes. Guys that tailgate someone with the entire freeway open to easily just go around the slow car and be on your way. But no, you don't want to go around and actually go faster, some LIKE intimidating and riding the back of a fucking car just to let out the pent up aggression at their failed life. Seen people tailgated at 1am on an empty freeway and only 2 cars on the road. Fucking assholes.

I also rarely go over the speed limit unless briefly to quickly pass someone or when going the speed limit would be unsafe (for example when everyone else is speeding too) and have never been in an accident.

If you see somebody speeding behind you, just move the fuck out of the way as soon as possible.
-
If you see somebody speeding behind you, just move the fuck out of the way as soon as possible.
Incorrect. If I am going the speed limit, or even above the speed limit, and they want to go above and beyond the speed to a great degree, that is their problem, not mine. I am not getting out of the way because they decided to drive at an exorbitant rate. The world doesn't beat to their drum.

Slow drivers need to learn to use the right lane.

Going 85 in the left lane when the speed limit is 55-65 (depending on the State), is not slow driving. If someone wants to go 90+, they are more than welcome to go around me.
-
If anything, I drive too fast. I have this theory that unless you exceed the speed limit by 10 mph or more, the police won't ticket you. The exception being school zones.
Another thing I do is set the adaptable cruise control to allow a fair amount of space between my car and the one in front of me. This way, I have more options to get out of the way of a tailgater, like speeding up to change lanes. It seems like some folks think if there's a few car lengths between me and the car in front of me, I must be driving too slow despite the fact that I'm exceeding the speed limit. It is also possible that younger drivers assume seniors (like me) automatically drive slower. Nothing could be further from the truth. Although there is this one neighborhood lady who I've had the misfortune of being behind who must be 110 years old and drives slower than most people walk.
I've learned to stifle aggressive responses to other folks acting like assholes behind he wheel. After giving the finger to someone who cut me off, they proceeded to follow me for several miles yelling obscenities out their window. The road rage nut jobs on the road make me nervous. SF1900 might do well to change lanes to let someone pass, even if they are speeding.

Agreed. If you are not the fastest person in the left lane, get out of it.

I drive slow as fuck rarely going over 50, mainly as I go almost everywhere in my tipper truck even when not at work but also I’m a lazy driver and just like to sit back and plod along, driving fast you have to be more alert. I do stick to the slow lane though

Be careful. My stepdad got a few tickets for driving too slow....but this was in L.A. in the 60's and 70's and everyone drove as fast as they possibly could. Isn't there a law about keeping up with the flow of traffic?
-
I was going 70 on way home today (middle lane) guy in slow lane in suv was flying, had to be 85 or so. Small car went to move into the lane, guy jammed on his brakes, slid sideways, bounced off the guard rail a bunch of times and came to a stop. Normally I get caught in the traffic of the daily Lowell Connector/Rte. 495 accident alley, today i finally witnessed one.
Speed kills boys and ghouls...

Henda, by all means go slow as you want in the right lane.
IN THE RIGHT LANE COCKSUCKERS

I can’t believe that there are people who actually go slow when there is someone on their ass in the hammer lane. Me and a buddy had a debate on this while driving once. I thought the people were just clueless that they were jamming up traffic. He said it was due to some sort of “sheriff syndrome”. I didn’t believe it, but will have to admit he was right next time I see him. Thanks getbig.

Anyone who drives slower than I do is a fucking idiot. Anyone going faster is a goddamn maniac.
-
SF1900 is 100% correct on this issue. Anyone who disagrees with him has either never driven in actual fast, busy traffic or is a bad driver or just an asshole, or some combination of these things.
The law in America is simple: you go at or below the speed limit unless it's unsafe to do so based on the road conditions or flow of traffic. The flow of traffic is never 20+ mph over the speed limit, so if you're going 80 in a 55 and want everyone else to move to the right and get out of your way, you're the problem, not them. "But I'm late for my minimum-wage manual-labor job" Tough shit, should have left sooner. "But my fat wife is giving birth again" Tough shit here too, the rest of the road isn't obligated to drive unsafely because of your personal situation.
The speed limit on my commute is 55 and I usually go 60-65 along with most of the rest of the traffic, which is very high-volume. If some asshole wants to go 75+ then it's their responsibility to operate their vehicle safely under those conditions. It's not my responsibility to accommodate them and shift out of the way, cut someone off at speeds that will cause major damage, injuries, or death if there's an accident. If you drive like that it's just a matter of time and number of exposures until you kill yourself or someone else. Drive on the shoulder and tell the cop you're on your way to the hospital when he pulls you over if it's really such a dire emergency.

You have a point. Many accidents happen during lane changes. Don't let someone intimidate you into making a careless lane change to accommodate their need to speed.

Exactly, Hulkotron.
The fact is, anyone driving at high speeds, is not only putting their own life in danger, but the danger of others.
Screw them if they want to go fast and put other lives in danger and they expect us to get out of the way. Absolutely ridiculous.
Talk about self-entitlement.
-
When I was driving between Austin and Oklahoma on a regular basis I found the slow lane is the new fast lane. Everyone loves to clog the fast lane and of course the middle lane is always full, I just pass in the slow lane until things open up.

But do you hog the left lane even when right lane is free. If so you're just a douche.
-
When there is a long stretch of with vehicles in the next lane, I make a point of vacating the fast lane. Traffic being what it is lately on I-5 and I-205 it is rare to have an open road with few vehicles. Within Portland Metro, the freeways are gridlocked most of the time. The infrastructure has not kept up with the huge influx of people in this area.
I grew up in Encino, CA which is just down the road from you, isn't it? I remember a time when the Ventura Freeway did not exist. I lived a couple of blocks away from the Sepulveda dam, which is where we road horseback. Half our street, Densmore was unpaved to better facilitate horseback riding. This was in the late 50's and early 60's.

You obviously don't drive the 101 north of San Luis Obispo. The flow of traffic is closer to 85 or 90 there

And many of the vehicles are older mini-vans running space saver spares! It's pretty nuts between there and Gilroy in terms of the speeds some of those folks drive especially considering the vehicles they're in.
OTOH, Oregon drives tend to get out of the left lane and to use it only for passing.
-
You can get a ticket on the Autobahn for being in the left lane clogging it up. It’s for passing only.

And same on the Autostrada in Italy. Some of the left lane lovers here need to drive in Germany or Italy. Might change their attitudes.

You've got this right. Speeds lower in Germany from where they were 25 years ago. People would max out their Mercedes' capability on the autobahn left lane.

If I’m speeding and you’re going the speed limit on my lane, the left lane of course, move if you have the opportunity. You never know the cause of why I’m in the hurry. I don’t like reckless drivers but why block somebody with your vehicle just because you’re butthurt that somebody wants to pass you. What if that person’s wife’s in labour, what if that person received an emergency call from somebody close to them etc?
It’s not your business to regulate traffic, move and let them pass.

This is ignorant and incorrect.
Vast amount of selfishness and ignorance of civil engineering and basic common sense in this thread by the "Hurf durf, just move out of the way, what if it's an emergency?" crowd.
Traffic laws are in place for the safety of drivers as a whole. They are not in place to accommodate people's personal circumstances.
Roads like the Autobahn are specifically designed to be safely traveled by cars driving at arbitrarily fast speeds. Highways and interstates in the US are not.
If it's such a time-sensitive life-or-death emergency then call the police or an ambulance, cars are required by law to get out of their way. Cars aren't required by law to get out of your way when you're trying to blast through traffic at fast speeds because it's unsafe for everyone.
-
;D ;D
I'm a dick when somebody flashes their lights for me to move when there is no where to move because the cars in front of you are following the speed limit..I will brake on their assets and won't let them pass me...

Some studies have been done that show not moving with the flow of traffic either way, too slow or too fast is more hazardous than going with the flow. This would include traffic moving faster than the legal speed limit.

When I’m tailgated I just slow down 🙂.

This is obviously a huge contradiction.
If it's not my business to regulate traffic, then its not the person's business who is going at excessive speeds to regulate traffic either.
If everyone accommodates the fast driver, then he is actually also regulating traffic, as his excessive speeds are causing people to take certain actions, thus regulating traffic. Why does he get to regulate traffic and people's movements, but I cannot?
And, yes, you are correct, I do not regulate the traffic, but the State regulates traffic and they dictate a maximum amount of speed. If you're going passed that speed, then you are breaking the law and cannot expect others to accommodate you.
-
When I’m tailgated I just slow down 🙂.
Same.
If there's nowhere to overtake and they're trying to force me to go over the speed-limit I make sure they go a lot slower.
-
But do you hog the left lane even when right lane is free. If so you're just a douche.
If you mean "hog the left lane" by purposely going slow, of course I do not do that. However, if I am going 70-80 in a 60, and you want to go 90, then screw you. I am going fast enough for the left lane. Where else should I go? 80 is too fast for the right and middle lane, so the left lane is the only suitable option. Do you really expect me to merge back and forth between the left and middle lane, despite going 80, because some people want to go 90+ Not happening.
-
Some studies have been done that show not moving with the flow of traffic either way, too slow or too fast is more hazardous than going with the flow. This would include traffic moving faster than the legal speed limit.
Absolutely.
Both cause interaction with other vehicles by causing bottlenecks and/or 'forcing' people to change lanes.
Driving closer than 2 seconds at a bare minimum (in a 4 wheeler in perfect conditions), either behind or ahead of another vehicle puts you at danger of being in an accident. Add more time in less than ideal conditions or for a larger vehicle. eg 7 seconds for a tractor trailer. 8 in rain etc etc
Any time you have to interact with other vehicles it puts you at risk of being in, or causing an accident.
Go the speed limit and it's all good.
I changed professions and left the office behind. Been a professional driver for the last 4 years. I'm on the road 10-14 hrs every day and haven't had a single at ticket or accident in 37 years of driving. I've also had 6 months more driver training and schooling than most other people on the road. Very, very few people drive correctly. People also tend to be at their worst when they get behind the wheel. The inner asshole comes out.

If that is your point, aren’t we all regulating traffic in some way just by being on the road whether moving or not?
Phones are not allowed either, are you going to say you’ve never used it while driving thus putting everyone in danger since phones aren’t allowed while driving?
Would you safely move out of the way for the emergency vehicle? Why not for someone else? Because the law states you don’t have to or because you don’t want to? Safely of course ...
-

Yes, we are all regulating traffic in that regard. Thus, pointing out that its not my duty to regulate is a moot point since we are all regulating traffic in some way. It just does not apply to me.
Yes, I would safely move out of the way of an emergency vehicle because it's the law and I assume there is an emergency.
A random person can be going 90 for any reason. As such, I am not going to keep switching between the left and the middle lane for every tom, dick and harry that wants to drive at an excessive speed, as this is also dangerous. Furthermore, there are a lot less emergency vehicles compared to random people going to excessive speed limits. Are some of them going to emergencies? Sure. Are most? Likely not.
-
I also must chuckle at all the yokels in this thread talking about "the left lane" vs. "the right lane" or "the fast lane" vs. "the slow lane". If you want to see some real traffic, drive during morning rush in a major metro area with 4+ lanes, lanes suddenly ending/merging all the time, onramps and exits all over the place, construction, breakdowns, all manner of trucks and various other weird/giant vehicles, hundreds of thousands of cars all traveling the same ~ 50 miles of roads in the same hour. Try flashing your lights and honking your horn at everyone in "your lane" who's not driving as fast as you want and see where it gets you.

The worst is when some schmuck turns in front of you going slow as fuck when theres no one behind you, and could have waited.
