Title: I got knee replacement surgery Monday
Post by: pellius on August 29, 2019, 12:32:44 AM
In 1995 I had over 90% of my cartridge/meniscus cut out so I knew this day was coming. I've had knee pain for the last 20 years but it has really gotten bad in the last few years and I was recommended to get the surgery two years ago so I've been putting it off. They are always stiff and swollen and has really affected day to day activities let alone working out. So I finally bit the bullet. I'm scheduled to get the second replacement on 10/7 pending how I recover from the first.

The first pic was taken a day before surgery after some stretching and icing. The icing really helps with the swelling but you can see that the left is still a bit puffy. It's the worse of the two so I had this done first.

The second pic is a day after the procedure. It's, of course; sore, swollen, and stiff but nothing I didn't expect. Now it's just focusing on getting better.

Knee joint replacement surgery is no fun. Although, I've been lucky enough to not need it, my late wife had both of her knees replaced. I remember all that she went through.

Do everything you're supposed to do to facilitate the healing process and you should be as good as new. This procedure is much less invasive then it was a few decades ago. So, you are lucky. My wife never regained her sense of balance and was never completely pain free.

that explains the personality bypass

If by that, you mean the loss of my faith you are incorrect.  That had begun long before that moment.  If you just mean my personality here, I am merely giving back what I go from so many self professed assholes who HATED me because of that faith in the Nazarene.  Quite often, they are now the ones that whine the loudest over how I so easily and thoroughly berate them.  It's not so much fighting fire with fire as it is shoveling shit onto flies.  ;D

I work with an asshole who had one of his knee's replaced a couple years ago.  He needed the other one done this year and opted to go with stem cell therapy.  He said this one feels as good as the other one.  So that is quite promising.  Here is the fucked up part.  Insurance paid for knee replacement at a cost of 25K.  He claims they wouldn't cover the stem cell treatment so he paid for it out of pocket.  I think he said it was 7-8K.

People start falling apart when over 60 and definitely over 70. In 1975 I was training for a contest and was teaching PE at a high school. My knees got sore so what to do re training them?
I went to my gym and did a light set of 5 reps on the Smith Machine. One with chains to keep the bar level. It weighed about 60 pounds. I kept adding 10 pounds to each side and kept
doing 5 reps. I managed to get 5 reps with 260 pounds. The next day my knees were okay. That made me wonder what caused the sore knees. Well, in some classes we played games on
a hard surface. Not good if you are heavy and land after jumping high. Impacts are what caused the damage. I avoided running on roads and sidewalks and especially downhill. No jumping
down from loading docks and that sort of thing. I never had sore knees again. Well, knees can get sore if you do mountain climbing with a heavy backpack and there are high steps up and down.

Makes me wonder how someone smart like Philip can injure himself like that. All that combat training can't be good for the joints. Fighting in the street should also be avoided. He also stated
that he can't do heavy weights for shoulder work. Sounds to me like martial arts is a dangerous activity. No way bodybuilders want to have knee surgery and end up with ugly scars.

Thanks for all the well wishes. They let me go day early which I insisted on. They don't let you sleep in the hospital as every two hours they wake you up for various tests.

Anyway, I got a good night's sleep and expect to get many more. They say the pain is worse after the second day and they're right. But nothing I didn't expect.

Will I still be able to fight and defend my QP with cheese?

One thing that surprised me is virtually all the pain is in the quad. It's swollen as hell, tender to touch, and feels like it's going to rip when I try to bend it. In the hospital, with time (15 minutes), I could bend it to a 90 angle. Now I cans barely get fifteen degrees.

Vince,

I agree.  Hard surfaces are knee and joint wreckers.  Not just the knees but the whole body suffers.

Basketball players are notorious for having knee issues due to the pounding on the hard court.  How about tennis players?  Ouch.

If you run, do it on a giving surface like grass or sand or a cinder track.

I foolishly played some basketball the other day on blacktop and my knees are very sore.  Dumb.

You can get away with it when you are young but when older it can mess you up.

Some older folks take painkillers all the time but this is just adding to further injury as you can't feel the pain.

Not arthroscopic surgery. Too bad surgeons can't do arthroscopic knee replacement surgery yet.

Different type of pain than from other surgeries. They saw of a piece of your bone on both ends and drill holes to attach the plates, then pound in the stem of the prosthesis into the bone to hold and secure the joint in place. When you watch it on YouTube with all the sawing, drilling and hand hammering, it's like being in an auto shop. It's a lot of trauma so I feel it deep into the bone. A throbbing pain that is tender and sensitive to touch. The worse part is when you stand up and the blood rushes down into your leg. The burn is so intense that it feels like acid going down your leg.
Takes me several minutes to slowly straighten up until the pain lets up a bit. The PT told me that blood vessels have a ton of pain receptors and that's where the intense burn comes from.

Yes, but they cut out over 90% of my cartridge 25 years ago. There was nothing left. I've had knee pain for over two decades and have tried all sorts of therapies. I inquired about stem cells and the treatment Levrone got as well as something that help my brother who is a competitive cyclist (AminoX?).

I had arthroscopic surgery done on my right knee and within a couple of weeks, I was walking unaided.

I don't see how they will ever fit a knee joint into a little hole like that -- lol. But I think in the future you will be able to grow and replace the cartridge completely and there will be no need for joint replacement.

Make sure you work hard on regaining full knee extension it’s very important for walking.   The PT will probably emphasize ROM which is also important but more of an objective marker for the surgeon and insurance.  Bear weight as much as tolerable to stimulate healing.  Slow and steady trust the process and fix up your diet (not saying you have a bad one) but 90% of your immune system is in your small intestine.  AKA all the nutrients your body will use to heal itself come from the foods you eat.  Nows the best time to eat like a pre contest body builder, lots and lots of green veggies lean protein healthy fats and low glycemic carbs.  Seriously this will improve your inflammation Nd recovery the most.

Dude that's nothing. You should ask ESF about HIS knee surgery.

Yes He did his own with a rusty spoon / some super glue / piano wire /
17 hot 27yr old Bitches Around him - Some heroin / home made deca & primo
All the while wide awake and doing an Irish jig with one arm tied behind his back
At 3am after a 35hr day & Training 127 clients 73 of which we’re either pro sports
Men or hollyweird “stars”.

Medical science is amazing. The prosthetic knee joint used today is expected to last longer than they did years ago. My wife had both knees replaced. The difference in size between the prosthetic was evident in the x-rays. the anchor in the second knee replacement was half the length of the first one. The metal rod carries your weight instead of the bone. Eventually the bone deteriorates.

Yep, that was back in 2003 or 2004, can't remember which year exactly... must've 2003 because it was just after he had open heart surgery because he had a bad reaction to 'pump n pose' and just before he was arrested for breaking a guys neck in a street fight, although his lawyer got the charge dropped it still cost him 12 grand in attorney fees.... still ended up doing a 12 day stint in county because the judge held him in contempt of court for fucking the bailiff. Which was a real bitch because his knee wasn't fully healed yet. Ended up getting infected and died of sepsis but was resuscitated when. He was later struck by lightning in a freak accident.

Still very limited range of motion. Still can't fully straighten my leg. It was like that for about 8 weeks before I had the surgery. That's what finally pushed me to finally bite the bullet. So it's been a while since I could fully straighten it. Ordered T-500 and BPC-157 from Amazon but it's been two weeks now and it's still "in transit". Anybody else use this and where did you get it that can provide better service?

How long between knees procedures did she have to wait? What was her recovery like? How was life after the surgeries and everything settled down? What kind of limitations did she have?

The real pain and tenderness are not so much in the joint but in the quad and shin area. Just a throbbing burning sensation. The quad area has subsided a bit but it's the shin part that really hurts. You can feel it deep in the bone. It's right below where the prosthesis stem was hammered in.

Everything will be good, Pellius.

It's a major operation so it will take some time to heal.

Pellius should go back to the infamous McD's in his current state and give that homeless lad a rematch.

Not trying to scare you but. Full knee extension is imperative for walking if the knee does not full extend then the entire kinetic chain is screened up upstream. Normally causing pain in the hip and lower back of the same side as the knee that can’t reqch full extension and potentially the shoulder and scapula of the opposite side?   Ever notice this?   Work hard on full knee extension asl the PT for extra homework to getting that full knee extension.

First off, everyone recovery is different. You should not compare your knee surgery to my late wife's.

There was probably a decade between the two knee surgeries. Her initial recovery was great. She did everything asked of her. Over the long term, she suffered from knee pain. But than her problem wasn't caused by a sports injury it was osteoarthritis. By time she passed, the arthritis in her hands was so bad that we both worn the same size wedding ring in order to get it over her knuckle. My ring size for that finger is a 13. It's never changed.

I never got that way of thinking. "We're all different." "Don't compare yourself to anybody else."
Why?

Sure we are all different in a specific sense but biologically we are identical that live and function in an exact manner using the exact physiological principles. If not, a field such as medical science would not exist. Sure our heart rate may be different, your lung capacity and oxygen transfer different, how you respond to exercise, nutrition, medication, all vary; but the basic principles apply exactly to everyone. Antibiotics are used to treat a bacterial infection for everyone. I happen to be allergic to Penicillin, so I use Tetracycline. The specifics vary, the type of antibiotic, but the general principle is the same, using an antibiotic.

It makes perfect and logical sense to compare yourself to others on how you progress or regress in everything. It gives valuable information on the present condition. If performing a procedure on a 1,000 people that takes a mean average of six weeks to recover from but you are going on two months with little progress that should be an indication that something is wrong. If you recover in three weeks instead of six that would be an incentive to see if you did anything or if there was anything about you to aid recovery. Your diet, any supplements, exercise protocol.

Today is the first day where I feel I'm beginning to make meaningful progress. More movement and mobility and less pain. Last night I still couldn't lift my leg up off the floor from the seated and lying position but I would just keep trying by keeping tension on the muscle using an isometric contraction. Then with my old Jiu-Jitsu belt wrapped around my foot, I would raise it by pulling up on the belt to get the motion going. This movement has been the most painful and debilitating. Also, the intense, eye-watering, burning sensation, that I would experience when standing upright has subsided a lot. Still hurts but I can go from sitting to standing in one motion. Before I would stand while remaining completely bent over and hold that position until the pain diminished somewhat and then keep rising in stages. This cause the blood to flow down more gradually so I wouldn't feel the intense blast by trying to stand straight up right away. It would take me about seven minutes to fully stand up. Now after two weeks and two days I can stand up all at once and now I can lift my leg up when I couldn't last night. Still, most of the pain is in the shin right below the prosthesis stem was hammered in but I expect my progress pace to start picking up a bit as I am able to incorporate more movements and exercises.

Sounds like you’re on the mend & rapidly so
Hopefully the pain will subside as you get stronger & more mobile.

Yes, being able to get around a bit easier I'll be able and more motivated to do more. For the first two weeks, everything I did was such a pain. Even just laying still my leg would just throb with pain. But I just took it day by day knowing this breakthrough would come.

Fuck me that looks intrusive, painful and fucked up. I hope I never need a knee replacement. Will be taking care of them as best I can. Same goes for hips. My grandfather never needed any replacements and almost reached 80. And he was a bad smoker, drank a lot etc. Never had one cavity in his mouth. If he took care of himself by not smoking and drinking and staying fit he would probably have reached 100!

Thanks. My condition wasn't caused my normal wear and tear. I had surgery on both knees back in 1991 in which I tore the cartridge and meniscus. They ended up cutting out over 90% in my left knee and I've always had knee issues since then. I was told, and was expecting, that this day would come.
I actually held out pretty long, 24 years, skating on about 5% of knee cushion considering that I never back off my leg training, running, biking, and worked that joint over the decades.
