Not who you view as the best fighters but the 3 fighters you rooted for the most.
Larry Holmes
Marvin Hagler
Salvador Sanchez
-
Before my time but having watched the older fights, I most enjoyed watching Thomas Hearns, Mike McCallum and of course, Mike Tyson.
-
Hagler vs Hernes, those were amazing. Sugar Ray Lenoard . . . unreal.
J

Julio Cesar chavez, his rise through the weights. March 17 1990 his epic battle with meldrick Taylor still sit down and watch this fight now. The reason why Richard Steele always got booed.

Roberto 'No mas' Duran

Little early for me, but Hagler and Tyson were big ones in my house. Hagler vs Hearns was the first fight I bet on through my dad. He was on the phone with his bookie I guess, and they asked who I thought was going to win, and in my 5 year old mind it was going to be Hagler and Hagler was bald, and bald guys were tougher. They got a laugh from that.
Tyson, I remember the universal exhilaration at how quick and vicious he was beating guys up, and the bitching about how short his fights were after you paid HBO / Cable the $30 - 40 for the pay-per-view.
Frazier was another. His career was more or less over by the 80's, but I remember my dad having the Ali and Frazier series on tape, and him putting them on for me sometimes. Even when I was very young, I liked and respected the fact that Frazier never forgave Ali, even though I didn't know all the ins and outs of those battles till I was much older.

Good list.
Joltin Jeff Chandler was a hell of a fighter.
I also forgot to mention Alexis Arguello. He was high on my list too.
I still remember the hype for the first Leonard - Hearns fight. I was 8 years old and from Detroit. I was the only person in my family rooting for Sugar Ray.
Dwight Braxton/Qawi was another bad ass. The Camden Buzzsaw!
Eusebio Pedroza was another gem at featherweight.
Damn, the 80's was GREAT!
-
qawi v holyfield (altho I think in the early 90's ) was a great fight

So were the Qawi-Saad Muhammad fights.
The Holyfield fights might have been 88-89ish.

Great post - Holmes was one tough mother. I think most who really appreciate the sport would agree Holes was a great HW - but I definitely agree that he is underrated by most casual fans. I am not sure why.

yeah, remember Larry got to 48 and 0 before age caught up with him
then he came back and held his own and then some against Holyfield, McCall and Mercer in the 90's

Yes, age did catch up with him but I thought he edged out Spinks in the 1st fight and clearly won ten of fifteen rounds in the rematch.
The Holmes who got stopped by Tyson was a shell of himself. When he came back and shut out Mercer and was even with Holyfield and McCall going into the 11th, that showed just how fucking good Larry Holmes was.
He is a top 5 heavyweight of all time.
-
Hagler will always be my favourite boxer.
I liked Duran too, and as an Aussie, I have to mention Jeff Fenech.

Hagler was an absolute monster. Loved his presser for the Hearns fight. That track suit with the baseball cap that read "WAR".
Poor Tommy. He had to come around at the same time as Sugar Ray and Marvin.

Suburban Detroit? Where are you from?
Originally from Detroit. I've lived in Royal Oak, Ferndale Hamtramck, been on the west coast for the past several years though.

Holmes ducked no one. Now we have "champs" picking their opponents base on beat ability.
-
1980's were great years for boxing. Might be my favorite decade. Although the 70's with Ali, Foreman and Frazier are classic gold. I stopped watching boxing in the 90's after the 1st UFC match in 93.

He had that no frills hard working style that many could relate to. Leonard was amazing but was more of a Golden Boy.

Lyle
Hearns
Vito the Mosquito
Paz
Duran
Braxton
Little Red

Hagler said he always shaved his head a few days before the fight so he would have rough bristles on his head which would scrape his opponents faces
-
Rocky couldn't hold his jockstrap
True statement that cost him with the powers that be at the time.
