in 1976 Tony said he would win the mr. America by 1980. everybody said he had no chance in that short of a
period.
he won it in 1978
-
Definitely a genetic freak.
-
Still looks great !!
-
I remember seeing him guest pose at the AAU Mr New England shortly after he won Mr America.
Most impressive V-taper I've ever seen in person.
He wasn't massive, but had an incredible physique.
damn the dudes with tiny joints!!!

I have seen him compete in his prime. His lat spread with that narrow waist was absolutely freaky. He was completely ripped to the bone. He wasn't a big man but wow he looked big on stage. Very few faults with many outstanding attributes. He use to call leg extensions suicides. Something like 6 sets of 20 reps done with little rest between sets.
-
Saw him at the Olympia, he couldn't weigh any more than 170 soaking wet but the guy is still in great shape
-
Nothing bad to say about him, but I was never a fan of his physique.

I just interviewed Tony today on the Bodybuilding Legends Podcast -

Definitely a genetic freak.
No doubt.
-
Friends for 30 years. Good man. Never cared for his "Michael Jackson of Bodybuilding" thing but whatever. Crazy V-taper. Cool lines. Trained by feel and by pump.

In a blatant attempt to hijack this thread, Ron Tuefel trained for the America at Ed Ryan's Gym in suburban Philly. The gym is still there, and it's a time capsule from the 70's

I remember when Teuful came on the scene in the mid 70's, in Pennsylvania. Things took an unfortunate turn for him :-X :'(

Smart training. Great physique.

Did he die of Cirrhosis? I know he loved Vodka in w/ his Weider protein. Too bad, he was great back in the day.
(Laura Combes liked to drink a lot as well).

I don`t remember how he died but I think you may be right.......I believe I remember rumors of his heavy drinking. ???
-
Looks like he died in 2002 of Liver failure it seems.

Tony had a good upper body
Terrible lower body development
Shouldn’t have won Mr America with only Half a Body.
-
He just won the AAU Masters Mr. Universe in November.
Of course, he was a favorite of mine as "The Jetman" during his WBF days.
1991 WBF Championship
1992 WBF Championship
Is he a "genetic freak"? Hmmm....
- AAU Mr. America by his early 20s,
- NABBA Mr. Universe
- Mr. World
- IFBB Denver Grand Prix winner
- Six-time Mixed Pairs World Champion
- AAU Grand Masters Mr. America (age 57)
- AUU Masters Mr. Universe (age 63)
You make the call!!

He probably does (or did). But winning Mr. America, before you can legally drink, doesn't equate to being a "normal guy".

Very good question. Joe Meeko commented on that, and did say that Ron was a heavy drinker, and couldn't get that monkey off his back, and eventually died, essentially due to drinking [I think liver failure - or something else directly caused by drinking]. I recall some initial speculation that Ron died of AIDS, but his family refuted that online, very early on [but didn't give the actual cause, IIRC]. Below is a screenshot regarding what Joe Meeko said. I have the link to the Ironage post where Joe Meeko made his comment, but the website is now only a part of our bodybuilding memories. I could check the Internet Archive and possibly find it.
Here is an Ironage Getbig thread on Ron:

Pearson, Baker and Taylor are all genetic freaks.

Great old school bodybuilder from the days when bodybuilding was a cool subculture.

Pearson, Baker and Taylor are all genetic freaks.
All the top pro bodybuilders are in one way or another.

They called him the muscular Michael Jackson in the late 80's. The Wiki shows him still alive.

He did a Digital Muscle interview with Shawn Ray, shortly after winning the AAU Masters Mr. Universe. So, unless something tragic happened within the last 60 days since then, the Jetman should be alive and well.

They are just jealous schmoes who look like shit
You are the “maple leaf muscle” and remember not vascularity make the whores panties wet

Nearly anybody's legs looked like sticks, standing next to Platz.
