Whatever works is great. Me....I'd rather eat more often and eat less at eat meal. I'd say that works well. But, in he past few weeks I've added 5 lbs. to my twinkie frame. I hate it and I love it. At 5'9" 175 lbs. This should be about perfect unless the middle section gets wider and the quads retain their toothpick dimensions. I am going to go to my grave trying to change something about my appearance. This is the curse for anyone who ever got into bodybuilding.

Yeah! I totally agree with you on this one man.

I wake up between 7-8am and do not eat until 1-2pm. Then, I eat again between 6-7.
This whole notion of eating 6-8 meals is absolutely ridiculous. Cant believe I was duped all those years when I first started to lift.

& don't consume protein powders (food for idiots) ;)

Getting older myself [I'll be 38 next month], I am absolutely on the same page as you: eating is overrated.
Sure, yeah, to be the best bodybuilder you can be, you do need calories, but as far as organ integrity is concerned...I see an inverse relationship - more food = reduced organ health. This is possibly specific to the digestive system, but I suspect overeating ages all of the systems of our bodies.
I believe Mike Francois said something to this effect on the old Pro Bodybuilding Weekly podcast way back in the day. Either former Getbigger Tim Fogarty stated that colon cancer was almost always related to HPC [receiving anal sex?]. I can't recall if Francois had colon cancer, or some other colon issue.
Either way, your point remains - more food = more organ concerns.
Specifically your point on aging is one I subscribe to. I feel like I've not been myself these past 2-3 years, and I've disproportionately aged in that time. I think if I keep calories low now, start cardio [something new to me], and adjust my training a little to prevent injuries while still lifting heavy [heavy for me - and achieving this through longer warm-ups], I will be able to both get good results [for me], while aging at a slightly slower pace.
It's interesting seeing how much older some bodybuilders looked like than actual age. In 1999, Markus Ruhl was only 27 years old, and someone on here said he looked mid-60's in this photo. That may be a bit of an exaggeration - but I could see someone think he is 45 or 50 in this shot.
I'm willing to trade some quantity of life for quality of life...but I just don't think that taking bodybuilding to a high level really produces much of either. It's sad, but that's just how I see it.

Spot on..
Ultimately though its a balance of being lean and strong vs healthy/long life as genetics allow
Do you want to be lean, big and ripped or as healthy as possible.....
Blue Zone people aren't big, lean and ripped... they are more "skinny fat" types

Frequent meal eating puts the body in a constant state of digestion, which saps energy.
Anyone who has tried IF can see how high energy levels are in the morning, fasted state.

Man these yoga guys are flakes. Yeah, if you want to look like a string bean who contemplates the universe all day by all means don't eat.
Me- I'd rather eat like a horse, ride my bicycle 50 miles, lift weights for an hour, whatever, lol Look at the animal world- they all eat whenever they can because food is hard to come by. Only because the human race is genius level at making foods do we have to worry about some guy in a turban telling us when not to eat.
And um - no, humans don't work best when hungry. Most of the tech we have today is from people who stay up all night drinking Coke and eating pretzels. I worked at Xerox corporate research for a time and the highlight of our day was a 2 hour lunch with food and drinks a flowing. I believe the Roman Empire had the same approach. ;D

The best work is done hungry. Most don't eat breakfast or have very little and are most productive before lunch. After lunch is the afternoon energy drop where people take 5 Hour Energy or drink coffee just to make it to closing time.

IF is great, at first I lost some weight but was surprised that my strength remained the same.

I eat like a slob with no self control. Just had potato chips and a cookie. I think because I work out so hard is the reason I'm not a mess. Can I be better? Hell yes. My work ethic for cardio and lifting is on point. My ethic for eating is completely missing. I also drink beer three days a week accounting a ton of monthly calories. I will try to diet soon. I truly have never dieted more than a couple of days in my life.
I work in my retirement job in an office with a bunch of young women in their 20's and 30's. I think they try to out diet each other. It's rare that I see them eat at work. One might eat a half an apple. I think they try to out thin each other. The day after Halloween I bought in a ton of left over candy and put it in the office kitchen. The next day it was practically gone. These diet fakers were dipping into the candy like a fat kid eats cake. (sorry for stealing your line fiddy cents)

on average what do you eat when you do?
First meal would be like: chicken, roasted vegetables and rice
Second meal: mixed greens, peppers, onions, asparagus, broccoli, carrots (mixture of vegetables)
I should also add that I minimally snack throughout the day, but its minimal--piece of fruit or some nuts/seed, maybe a cucumber or carrot. Either way, its way less than the 6-8 meals I used to eat back when I wanted to be an IFBB pro. lol. I have not lost any size or strength either. Go figure.
Ive never felt better. I don't feel constantly bloated and tired. And, I actually poop better.

When I used to eat 6-8 meals per day, I always felt bloated and tired. What a waste of time and effort. I cant believe I listened to Flex Magazine!! >:( :( >:( :(

Me too. Bloated and tired all the time plus the inconvenience of stopping everything to eat every couple of hours. We thought we were dedicated and cool when really everybody just thinks you're an idiot living like this. You can build a great body eating and exercising like a normal human while having more time for other interests.
My 5,000 post! 8)

Yeah, eating every 6-8 hours was a waste of time. When I first started to train, I trained with a guy who I thought was natural. He was like 5'9" ripped the bone and weighed like 185. He won a bunch of national and state championships under numerous federations. I thought I needed to eat like him to look like him. I used to carry my food around every where. Always worried about eating every 2-3 hours. So much time wasted.

When I up my meal count, at least two of my meals consist of a protein shake. -Cannot be bothered trying to come up with 6 different meals a day.

a shake isnt a meal
meal
noun: meal; plural noun: meals
any of the regular occasions in a day when a reasonably large amount of food is eaten.
-
I eat nonstop throughout the day- small meals but nonstop. There is no "breakfast, lunch dinner" routine. So i guess I should weigh 500 pounds right now instead of my current 190 ,lol.
I swear I am on an anorexia board sometimes. More obsession about eating than just about anywhere else I read.
Intermittent fasting is yet another of the 10,000 "tricks" to losing weight. Newsflash- anytime you get hungry in the slightest your body is releasing the hormone ghrelin, or "growth hormone-releasing peptide". Hello, Buehler? This is a bodybuilding board. You WANT to release ghrelin.
Are you too fat? Then cut down on refined sugars since they spike insulin and artificially trigger ghrelin. If you want to keep eating Twinkies then your only other option is to calorie count. Then you can get or be lean without cutting back on sweet stuff. It just hurts a little, haha.
Note: drugs not included in this scenario. They throw everything out of whack.

Okay. By definition that is correct. So rather than have three meal where you feel stuffed, snack throughout the day. The nutrition in some protein drinks exceeds what you might be getting in the average meal.

Was still bloated and always felt full.

No added protein in the 2nd meal?

Sometimes I add grilled chicken.
Today I had chicken cutlets, beets and spinach. And some fruit and almonds.

Not sure what's going on, but in the last two weeks I've gained about 12 lbs. I don't think I am eating more or any worse than usual.
-
unless you are trying to add mass (powerlifter, open mens bber, football player/ etc etc)
fasting is the way to go; you will look and feel better.
-do not eat or even snack a little when you fast (it will spike blood sugars and make you hungry/crave food more)
-it will take you several fasting attempts to win at fasting. there is always trial and error. do an 18 hour fast and then work your way up.
-there are several different lengths for fasting so pick method to match your goals
-buying bottled water makes fasting easier - do not drink distilled water on a fast
longest I have gone is 3 days.
