RIP Zhanna Rotar - IFBB Pro, and NPC/IFBB Judge

News of Zhanna's passing out here in Southern California has hit many of us hard.  She was 39 years old. She was taken off life support yesterday, Christmas Day, with her mom by her side.

Zhanna was an NPC Judge here in Southern California for years, and has been part of our friends and community since she moved down here from Seattle.

from Musclecontest - We are saddened, devastated and heartbroken that our dear Zhanna Rotar @zhannarotar has left us. 💔 She was such a huge part of our Musclecontest family for the last 19 years and we can’t imagine the upcoming years without her. Her energy was magnetic and she lit up the room from the time she entered. Her loving and passionate nature will truly be missed. Such a caring and beautiful soul, taken from us too soon. She will always be in our hearts. We will share information about her memorial service when we have more information about it.

She was hit by a car in Irvine, California a few days ago, taken to the hospital, but never recovered.  Last show she was judging at was the 2019 Masters USA two weeks ago out here in Los Angeles.

Video we took back in 2010 with Zhanna, interviewed by Timea.

Not married - no kids.

That pic is from Terrick, VP of Musclecontest, and his new baby, I think, that she was holding.

She had CHI with SDH and ICH.
She was in barbiturate coma and developed hydrocephalus after which she had transtentorial herniation,
pithed and was flat line.

Think it was hit and run. Hope they caught the bastard.

From Tamer El-Guindy (Musclecontest President)

I met Zhanna when I was 18 years old. Zhanna was only 16 and both of us were running for President of the International Club at school. We started dating shortly after and both of us ran for the Student Government. We used to take many classes together and of course, workout together. She was beautiful and her dreams were bigger than life. She wanted to go back to Ukraine and become President to help the people there. She truly had a pure soul.

After graduating we moved out of Seattle for a job opportunity in Baltimore where she and I were the #1 and #2 salespeople for Gold’s Gym. When we lived in Baltimore, we didn’t have much but we had each other and that was enough. We then moved to California together and owned our own Gold’s Gym together in Rancho Santa Margarita. At that time, Zhanna had just got her IFBB Pro Card and competed in her first Arnold Classic in Figure. We both started judging shows at Musclecontest close to 20 years ago.

I remember we had so many memories... I remember our first time at Gold's Gym Venice eating tuna cans outside after our workout. The time we celebrated the New Years of 2000. We grew up together, loved each other and were best friends. Even after we broke up we remained close and she loved my family as her own—Candice, Enzo, Terrick, Heather, Scarlett and Preston.

Her death is a tragedy that leaves a hole in many of our hearts. Earlier this week, she was crossing the street by her apartment complex in Irvine and was hit by a car. She suffered severe head trauma and was brain dead upon arrival to the hospital. She was kept on life support for several days with no improvement. We said goodbye to her on Christmas evening when she was unplugged from life support. We will meet again in Heaven.

Rest In Peace, Zhanna (08/02/1980-12/25/2019)

Hi Everyone,

My name is Bill and one of Zhanna's friends and neighbors here at The Village in Irvine, next to Spectrum Shopping Center.

All of us here who knew her well and a few that did not are completely devastated by the tragic news of her passing.  We are not completely clear regarding the details, but from what we can gather, Zhanna was either going to or coming back from the gym. We have many small gyms at our complex, but the nearest larger one is just 3 minutes walk across the road to Spectrum where there is a 24hr Fitness. Then half a mile down the road, a very large 24hr Fitness+. Zhanna would help train people at these gyms, as well as LA Fitness in the surrounding areas. So basically, everyone in the area knew her in some way or another.

From online reports and some closer personal ones, we believe she was struck by a car near where we live and suffered a catastrophic head injury. The hospital induced a coma and operated to relieve the bleeding in her brain, but after about a week, she passed away in her induced state. We are not sure if it was a hit and run, or other details but either way it is truly tragic and many people will be severely impacted for a very long time, and some for all of their lives.

Zhanna was a beautiful soul and she was friends with my 18yr daughter, helping her out in some of her routines for fitness, modeling and on the stage as a young professional singer. Tragically, we moved to the US because my 18yr son was hit and killed by a careless truck driver on his way to school in Tokyo and the pain for all of us was so unbearable we had to move from our home there. I'm British and my wife is Japanese, and I spend almost 30 years in Japan, so walking away from life there and the business I founded was all the start of many years suffering from PTSD, then grief induced depression. It is now eight and half years since our loss and only this year did the cloud of grief and depression lift enough for me to try and work properly again. It is still hard at 56yrs old, but I have to keep moving forward one day at a time.

So, losing our friend Zhanna has just made us all feel so sad again and everyone here is stunned and talking about it with total disbelief. To not see here walking around between gyms, pool parties, to the Village Market and around the complex is just too much to bear for many of us. We just keep welling up with tears and feel helpless. From my own horrific experience and training (psychotherapist), I can help some of the others around us come to terms more easily I hope, or help manage the pain.

After this posting, I am going to the gym for a session and will hold Zhanna in my heart and mind as I workout, thinking about her and how she has been the catalyst for so many people to live better and healthier lives.

Miss you lady and you will forever be in our hearts here. We will continue to train strong knowing that is what you would always want, with that charming smile and cute Ukrainian accent we all loved.

From all of us here at The Village Irvine.

Thank you Bill for sharing, and sorry to hear about your son.  This has truly been a tough few weeks for many of us here.  As some of you know, I lost my dear friend and colleague Jamie at age 41 two days before Thanksgiving. We had worked together for 20+ years at DNA Sports. She left Monday night at 7pm, and passed away in her sleep.  So Zhanna passing away with a needless death at 39 just whacks many of us around. Funny how you see someone, get a hug, say talk to you soon, and bam.

Come on man why all the medical lingo. Why not just say she had cranial trauma with subdural hematoma and bleed with resultant swollen brain and herniation. You are sharp no doubt but we are on GetBig not Medscape.

Update:

The driver turned themselves in after what was initially at hit and run.

Apparently, Zhanna was brain-dead upon admittance to hospital but kept on life-support until her mother accepted that all further efforts were not going to bring Zhanna back. It is believed she lost consciousness on impact and never recovered so unlikely to have suffered.

On a side note, I cannot attend the funeral because it will trigger my PTSD again, since I lost my 18yr son in a traffic accident a number of years ago. But my thoughts are constantly with her mother and I wish for her to get all the support she is going to need long-term.

Tragic needless loss of a wonderful person and we all miss her so much.

Take care everyone out there and remember about 14,000 people a year die in the US alone on the roads from texting (driving / walking) related accidents, even though I am not stating this was what happened in Zhanna's case, because I do not actually know. I do know however, several people who have lost their lives this way including a local 17yr classmate friend of my daughter. So as said, please take extra care.

Zhanna's funeral was on Sunday, and it was truly tough to be there to all that came to give their condolences. It started at 8am at the mortuary, then 11am at the grave site.   Some people came for one or the other, others for both.  Remembering Zhanna was why we were there, to pay our respects, and to say goodbye to someone that has been part of our lives here in Southern California for the past 15 years, as a competitor, as a judge, as a friend.

Zhanna was also beautiful, both in her sexy looks, and also because she cared for many, including the competitors and her friends.  Seeing a lot of people come was nice, as many of us  don't live in Laguna Hills.  Some even came from Vegas.  The morning part featured an open casket, which for some reason, took a lot of push for me to go up there, and say goodbye.

We had a funeral procession to the gravesite, 4 miles away, and a small ceremony there in which we placed a rose and a final goodbye.  Tears of remembering all the good times with had, and sorrow for realizing that you never know when your time is up, that we truly did not get to say goodbye in the way we wanted too. Tragic.   The toughest was seeing her mom and truly feeling on how hard it was for a parent to bury and say goodbye to their daughter.

I will miss Zhanna, seeing her in front of me at all of the local shows, taking pictures because it was a lot of fun, various candids.  RIP.

Its not smart when you are unable to communicate with your audience... Speaking needlessly in acronyms is a sign of true douchery.

Rip to this chick 39 is very young. Very sad.
