Any GetBiggers here ever run into this? (If you have, post your thoughts).
I've been seeing this lately (last 4 months) where caffeine doesn't do anything for me anymore, and maybe even makes me sleepy?
Example, been drinking a couple of Bang Energy (or similar) at night (well, 5 PM is nite for me) hoping to stay up 'til like 9 PM maybe.
BY 7 PM I cant keep my eyes open and Im out like a light. (600 mg's of caffeine).
This AM (like most AM's), I had 3 coffee's when I got up (4 AM), by 7:30 I was lying down again and napping while the car was heating up. (On vaca this week).
(Wife came down for us to go to the gym and I was snoring while the car was warming up).

Tring to make sense of it by reading some articles, but unsure still. (Adenosine overload maybe).
How does coffee work to keep you awake? The caffeine in coffee blocks adenosine receptors in your brain from receiving adenosine, which is a neurotransmitter that causes fatigue. Although caffeine prevents your brain from receiving adenosine, it doesn’t stop your body from producing the neurotransmitter. Thus, when the caffeine wears off, there is a buildup of adenosine that will make you sleepy. In other word, your body have built tolerance to caffeine. (How Long Does Caffeine Stay in Your Body )
Caffeine isn’t making you sleepy, because it doesn’t impact how much adenosine your body manufacturers. It does, however, delay the effects of that adenosine so that you feel it all at once in a rush when the caffeine wears off. (Tip: how many mg of caffeine in a cup of coffee)
Odd... (Im actually going to lie down now).

I used to be able to drink a pot of coffee and move mountains for hours - but it doesn't work like that anymore. Part of it is getting older and part is tolerance.
Might try different timing and type. I switched from just coffee in the morning to a couple cups of strong black English tea and it seemed to help. A little different buzz suited for getting moving IMO.
Late afternoon/early evening working or workouts are all coffee...biggest cup I can get.

Depends of coffee quality/strength , far the best American coffee is freshly roasted 1 on Hawaii ...........
3-5 espressos by 10 am , :)
-
You've built up a tolerance to it just like any other drug, your adrenal glands and probably fried as well, your best bet is to give it up for a month or so, try to clear out your receptors. Caffeine is like a credit card, every time you drink a cup it's like you're putting your body in debt (energy wise) sooner or later you have to pay back that debt.
-
Logical thinking says you have built up a tolerance for caffeine.
Go cold turkey for a couple weeks. Just drink water.
At a minimum cut way back. Those energy drinks at 5PM are a bit much. What's up with that?
Also in the future skip any caffeine after 4 PM.
If you get tired at night go to bed. You need more sleep.
I drink about 4-6 cups of coffee a day. By 9 PM I'm starting to fade. I'm in bed by 9:30 PM most nights. Up at 5:30 AM.
That's 8 hours of bed/sleep and I wake up a lot during the night.
You're up at 4:30 AM so it's normal you'd be tired by early evening.
-
Do you have a.d.d?
If so caffeine can hav the opposite effect

Darker the bean = the less the caffeine
Not saying you, but people tend to think that the strong taste of dark coffee equals more caffeine than a light roast. Not true

Why do people drink this shit is beyond me
Never needed it

You have built up a tolerance, either take some time off from using caffeine or increase the dose.

They rate coffee 1-8 ( ?) , some brown can be stronger than black beans or vice verse.
Aroma of roasting cafes kills, when in Sydney I would travel 25km to 1 of roasting cafes.
Some cafes , use 'coffee aroma sprays', to attract clients.
I can't forget coffee roasting place near Hilo on Hawaii !, far the best American coffee ever !.
Loved standing espressos in Italy ,like places on Via Veneto in Rome, 1 cafe near Casino in San Remo, 1 near Stazione Centrale in Milan,Chez Luis cafe in Bordighera,................. :-*

No effect at all ,I zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz like a zombie at 11 pm !.

sometimes helps to mix pre workout type formulas as well, I know their all caff based, but i find if i rotate two or three of them, I get a much better effect than using just one.
I also dont drink coffee, I have also stopped using pre workout unless its leg day or pre cardio and I mean an hour plus. Just dont see the need to do small body parts and require a boost.

Addiction mostly. Most people tend to forget it's a drug with side-effects, tolerance and potential withdrawal symptoms.

I’ll have 2 cups in the morning any later than that it puts me to sleep. My wife sometimes drinks it about an hour before bed and sleeps like a rock

Where's our resident drug addict jail bird to recommend snorting adderall?

A certain popular 70s era bodybuilder at the original Gold's once told me about how they "used to drink" a bunch of coffee prior to training and then they discovered "NoDoz".
When you stop drinking caffeinated beverages you get the mother of all headaches that can last days... especially if you just pug that stuff down big time. OUCH! I could regale you with tales from the crypt about caffeine beverages but it doing so might turn you white with fright, LOL!
I have a cup or three of coffee a day and maybe a pop or iced tea with dinner. That's enough for someone like me.
-
I think you can develop a tolerance. I only train twice a week and take couple of caffeine tabs (400mg) an hour before training. Been doing it for years and it still gets me going.
-
OP, for how long has caffeine had little effect on you?

Seems like its been the last 4 months or so. IroNat the only reason I tried drinking Bang's (or similar) at 5PM is because I cant stay awake, by 6 PM I'm starting to fade, struggle to make it 'til 7 PM. Then sleep 'til 4 AM. (A good 9 hours). ON weekdays, not an issue, but on weekends it blows. I used to have insomnia, now it seems like narcolepsy, odd. Age thing maybe.
I guess its the tolerance thing like many mentioned. maybe Ill try weaning off, cold turkey sounds "not fun"...

Ha, ha ha, I said "Ween"... (Thanks for your replies)!

Not saying you, but people tend to think that the strong taste of dark coffee equals more caffeine than a light roast. Not true
Of course it is so, if you say so.."During the roasting process, a bean loses its mass. ... If you measure your coffee by scoops, light roasted coffee will have more caffeine, since the beans are denser than a darker roast. However if you weigh out your scoops, darker roasts will have more caffeine, because there is less mass." -wikipedia.
One of the facts of the matter. Then there is plenty of variations what people drink as coffee. If you drink an espresso, it have been extracted quite fast, so it has less caffeine. If you make your coffee in a mocca-pan, it has been extracted slowly, so it has plenty of caffeine. If you use cheap coffee and ordinary coffee maker, it has moderate amount of caffeine.
If you drink coffee & some energydrinks etc. crap, use booster which has high caffeine content + PED's, what you really are doing is pressure test for blood vessels in your brains by pumping blood pressures upwards ;D

Cold turkey probably isn't a good idea.
Just cut back. Nothing after 4 pm.
Had relatives visiting yesterday so I went to bed at 10PM (was fading bad) last night and woke up around 1 AM, then again at 4:30AM and finally got up at 5:30.
Must have woke up 10 times throughout the night.
Typical night.
-
powerlift, I have not read the whole thread. But, try not to consume any caffeine for a month and then start again. You could see if that makes a difference.

Yup. Same here, brother! ;D

Try Provigil. Much better than caffeine imo.
When I drink caffeine it is always first thing in the morning. Either 1/2 Monster/Bang or a can of diet coke. I don't try coffee at all or use pre workout crap. So if I need something to get me through the whole day, I use 1/4th tab of provigil. Since you are already quite used to stims, I would say take the standard 1 tab dose.

Yesterday, 5 espressos & 3L of black ice tea :)
NoDoz, lost on popularity ?. Truck drivers must be on something else ..........

Yeah, avoid having a natural coffee in favor of a chemically concocted Monster or Diet Soda - or better yet just use drugs, hahaha. Channeling ESF here for sure.

True, but I just dislike hot beverages in general. I don't even drink tea or hot chocolate.

This same thing happened to David Dearth. He basically blew out his adrenal glands. Fucked up his sleep patterns (made worse by also heavy coke use).
Possible treatment is to stop coffee cold turkey and start using theobromine as a well-being stimulant.
