I’ll start dropping this week until the Feb 15 where i should be down to about 235. It’s at that point where I start my real prep and personally cannot wait. Admittedly at this weight it’s no fun.

Is 38 too young to start on heart health drugs, assuming no symptoms are present?
I am pretty lucky to have no health problems yet, but pushing 40, I take nothing for granted.

I'm not sure how lean Coach can be at 58 [or how lean ANYONE can be, with age], but if he got to 170-lb in condition, he would look amazing. That is pretty massive for his height. There was a guy who I knew in 2001 who was 5'6" and 180-lb, and he was considered huge for a 20-year-old. It's not like 180-lb would even be small for 5'10". Georges St-Pierre was doing most of his best competitive work in fighting at around 185-lb, and he is 5'10.5". He looked like a mini-bodybuilder. As I said, I don't know how lean Coach can be at his age [i.e., does he want to take whatever is necessary to be extremely lean at his age], but 170-lb at even 15% body fat would be a solid physique for any age. And there is no reason why he couldn't be at least that, if not in much better shape.

My coach, Eryk Bui would go to about 225 in the off-season and compete around 205 at 5’4

Add to my comments the fact that you're a smart, highly successful, family (wife + kids) man with multiple businesses. You've got your shit together in this game we call life. Everyone who knows you is fully aware that you're capable of getting into contest shape at a moment's notice and have a history of being in fantastic shape over the last 3-4 decades, because you have raw determination. You don't need whatever it is that these contests give you. You've proven to yourself and the world enough times over that you are a master at this game of bodybuilding. Now, as we (and I mean you, myself and the other 55+ members of this board) get older, what counts is maximizing our time on this earth for the sake of our family and friends. I’m 6’2 and that’s the most I’ve been up to in weight, and I didn’t feel too comfortable. I’m around 215, 220 max, good shape, prob around 10/11 percent bf and clean

You're not getting any younger, Coach. You always strike me as very goal-oriented and wanting to achieve things. To keep moving forward. If you have the desire and the will you are on the right track and now is the time -- really the only time at this stage. One of the worse things in life is to have to look back with regret that you didn't do something that you wanted because you were afraid or just didn't believe in yourself. You can't go back in time and there are no do-overs. I think people aren't giving you enough credit though their heart is in the right place (at least some, there are always those that piss on everything). You're not stupid and keep a close watch on things and if there are real serious concerns it won't be ignored. Bulking up and being so heavy is the most dangerous phase of a "prep". It puts tremendous strain on the body. Now that's over and you are still alive. You will only get healthier now. Of course, the next "dangerous" phase is the final countdown when you start depleting water and all that stuff. You've done this enough times to know the risks of excessive depletion but it is done all the time in all sports where one has to make weight. You've done it and you've helped others do it. So I think health-wise the worse is behind you.

Unless you are joking, you have a very interesting way of looking at your health. If you weighed less, would you still need two blood pressure meds and Lipitor? Statins have some negative sides.
1. Muscle aches and weakness are frequently reported with the use of statins.
2. Abdominal pain has been observed in many individuals who take statins.
3. Rarely, statins may cause liver damage or liver failure
4. Some patients struggle with insomnia while taking statins, particularly a difficulty falling asleep.
5. Rhabdomyolysis, an extreme and potentially life-threatening form of muscle inflammation, has been reported in 0.1 percent of patients who take statins.
6. There are additional sides which are fairly minor or uncommon.

Normally people don't take medications for high blood pressure and high cholesterol when these things aren't a problem and may never be. No doctor who is legit will prescribe meds as a preventative rather than a treatment.

That was insane. When I saw Lee last year he was probably close to 250 and he’s an inch shorter than me. He told me his prep even at that weight was only 12 weeks with two hours of cardio per day.

You know...this thread seems pretty critical of Coach, but I appreciate that it comes from a space of genuine concern for his health.
Coach, you know that I've always been a supporter of yours, but I just think you have nothing to prove. I think you mentioned above being lean at 190-200, but if you were lean at 170-lb, you would be more muscular than 99% of men at any age! If you are comfortable at 200-lb and relatively lean, then all the power to you. Some men can be heavier and be more comfortable at that weight. I have decided that for myself, being 175-lb and relatively lean [compared to the general public - not by competitive bodybuilding standards] is more than sufficient. I can be pretty strong [for me] at that weight, be competitive nationally in my weight class in strongman, and overall, feel pretty good.
You obviously have a better capacity for gaining muscle than I do though. For example, even at 185-lb, my weight starts going straight to my stomach. So I absolutely can't be a big man - especially naturally. I suspect I could be 200-lb with a smaller stomach if I had some assistance, but I feel 175-lb for me is the weight that maximizes strength, fitness, and overall just feeling good.
Like I said, you are going to be more muscular than 99% of men even if you weigh substantially less. It's also pretty apparent to me that you are going to be a fit muscular man for basically your entire life. And again - you have absolutely nothing to prove.
I hope none of this comes across as jealous. It goes without saying that you have a better physique than I ever do. And I am impressed with your results over 50, or for any age really! You and tommywishbone are both inspirations to me. No hate here!
Let's not forget that you've already spent years as one of the leanest and most muscular men around.

When I started dieting for the Cal last May my beginning weight at prep was 213 and weighed in on the Friday before the show at about 193-4. When I stepped on stage after loading I was 202. Night show I was 207. I actually grew into my prep nicely.
I was going to do the Nationals (Masters) after the Cal in July but felt I needed more size with better conditioning to compete at that level. I took the year off to prepare for this coming July (Nationals). It’s been almost 71/2 months of training, eating and generally staying on task (yes, including Doctors check ups) and staying focused. The last time my BF was measured I was 238 at 12.8%. Since I posted this I’ve dropped 6lbs. BP was a bit elevated but it’s under control now.
The hiccups were caused because my digestive system was screwed up from all the food and constipated. Obviously at my age my digestive system can’t handle that much food. By the time another meal time came around, my previous meal wasn’t digested yet (for info on my diet see the “what did you eat yesterday” thread. My diet (before last week) was about 80/20 clean to dirty.
Cardiovascular systems checks out with the scans I had a few months ago with no blockage whatsoever. BP is taken 2-3x per day

Are you targeting a specific weight class? Or just letting the chips fall where they may? 238 @ 12% tells me that you could be in shape at heavyweight.

I completely understand and know in the back of my mind I'm too old to be this big and got carried away with knowing after the Cal I needed to put on size for the Nationals in July and then If I win whatever comes after that. Never been this big before while staying relatively lean. Like I said, I'll drop to about 235 before I start actual prep. Next year I think I'm done and will come down and stay around 190-200.

Kamal won our class and I missed the top five by a point. Yeah, I follow him. I absolutely love his positivity. Even though I wanted Lundsford to win I was just as happy when Kamal won

Incredible as it may sound, some people enjoy life by setting goals and striving to achieve them. When you have a drive, a desire, to do something, to accomplish something that's meaningful to you, it's not about logic or reason. It has to do with this ineffable quality that some men have that makes them different from animals. It's their spirit. Their soul.
There is more to life than just existing as long as you can just seeking pleasure and comfort.

big year this year hopefully, just a few things to get past and then Im going for a coupl big shows later in the year, agreed, the clock is ticking but I think things are falling into place, the age limits have been changed to over 55, I turn 55 in July so its a big advantage for me..

Most guys posting here who have never competed will never understand why guys like Joe,illuminati,or joswift and others continue to train to compete.
Just keeping it real .............not a knock on guys who`ve never done a contest,but competing can be a source of drive and always allows you to get in top condition...........a feat that is rarely done by just working out a few days a week.

It was so toxic when applying all parts of your body had to be covered including the face no matter what the weather was.
Point being, I worry (or at least think about) the latter effects of the work I did when I was younger bring exposed to tar, pitch, etc at that time than I do about training for bodybuilding. We have no cancers that run in either side of my family but the thought is always there. Make sense?

Regular bloods mainly for hematocrit, keeping it within normal ranges,(give blood to control) taking baby asprin. Elevated hematocrit is a big risk factor for old body builders for heart attack and stroke. Monitoring blood pressure on a regular basis, taking medication to lower it. Taking a statin or supplements to make sure ldl is not really high, getting Hdl up is always gonna be tough, niacin can be effective. If guys don't do any of this they can be walking around like a time bomb with hematocrit and blood pressure through the roof none the wiser, young guys can get away with this but 50+ very risky stuff....
And yeah heaps of people are fat slobs and can be just as bad, it's all relative... But if there's two of you and one is 250 juiced to the max and the other is 180 living a "normal" lifestyle chances are much greater the heavy one drops of the perch first.
But as I said I don't have anything against going after it at any age, what anyone does with their body is their choice.

I think Joe knowns what he's doing. There's a risk in everything we do, even trusting the polluted food industry, etc.
But some good points, just monitor the basics and do the things needed to correct anything suspect. Then after show is done, maybe cruise/TRT/clean out.
Family history and genetics are the number one things to look at. IF not much heart disease, then monitor as needed and be smart.
If lots of heart disease, I would recommend TRT only. Again, I'm sure he appreciated the concerns, many valid, but we have to live our lives

When your still young you can run whatever and 99% of guys won't have an issue, how many of us were juicing hard in our twenties, I used for years straight, up to 2500 mgs a week, the body takes it better at that age... This is accurate - Dec 23rd I was rushed to the hospital BP shot to 250 or 170 ( something.) I take 200 mgs of a blended test and NOTHING else ( vitamins not included.) I train 4 days a week and eat a plant based diet and run every day. My red blood cell count was so high, my heart was having a hard time pumping it - blood thinners and 6 days in emergency. Had I been taking BP medication ( as I should have ) I’d have been fine - but I paid it no mind. Biggest mistake of my life.

I generally agree with you but you can't say the hardcore bbing lifestyle isn't high risk, every individual is different has different genetic predispositions.
What I say again is that if you are above a certain age and don't take precautions to minimise the risk, there is no way of knowing if you are a ticking time bomb and could be VERY high risk..... Most will not be in this group but some will and some do die because of this, just because I don't know any specifically doesn't mean this does not happen.

JAGO, hopefully you are doing much better? Do you have a family history of blood pressure/cardiac issues? Does Dr. know about the test usage?
If so, what does he/she think about that?
Being on Test, do you do quarterly bloods to monitor yourself? If not, you may want to, good way to monitor hematocrit. PrivateMDlabs.com (and others) can be done for a fairly cheap cost.
(Most people get the female panel done as its cheaper, gives you all the needed markers, etc).
Even with taking care of ourselves, genetics rule and its tough sometimes to outwork/out-eat genetics. Shits just gonna happen.

A positive thing is that because all of a sudden I had extra time on my hands I started training again and I have been going strong for a full year 6 days a week. I'm dieting right now... got up to 232 which was the heaviest I've ever been. Down to 203 right now and planning to go down to 190 and will probably end up around 195 once I start eating more carbs again. Feeling so much better right now and that is at 5'11“. Currently no intentions of ever going up in weight that much. I'd be satisfied with adding another 4-5lbs of lean muscle over the next year or two and I guess I should be able to do this without going crazy on a bulk.
Have you ever tried a lean bulk? How much do you think this bulk gave you in terms of actual muscle?
You feel so much better in so many ways when not overeating and weighing less... yet I still did those crazy bulks for almost 20 years until I've realized this. It also seems that I simply don't gain that much actual muscle anyway, mostly just bloat, a bit of fat, bit of muscle..

Yeah I guess you are correct, there are most likely other factors like bone structure, cardiovascular system and so on. I guess height is just the most important factor.
And of course height to weight ratio does not say anything about your body composition. You can have a higher BMI while still being healthier because you are carrying relatively more muscle mass than someone else who is just fat with lower BMI. But I do think (not 100% sure though) that there are numerous studies linking excess body weight to shorter lifespans no matter what that weight comes from and I do believe that is true ... in general everything above one's individual "perfect" weight is probably unhealthy and will shorten your life... your heart has to work much harder, you have to eat more food which needs to be digested and so on. Most people who live a very long and healthy life are pretty light.
I guess though that as long as you don't get over let's say around 12-15% bodyfat and stay natural you are probably not going to exceed your "healthy" weight anyway.

I agree with you regarding BMI not being an accurate way to determine whether someone is technically overweight. Unfortunately, it's a handy tool doctors often rely on. I laugh when I see that my BMI suggests I am overweight. There is also some truth to what you say about what we weigh, whether it be fat or lean weight, it can be a dangerous burden on our heart health. Ultimately, we like easy answers to complicated questions.

I can probably tell you almost exactly (if that made sense lol) since I literally just did my first prep assessment before I start my real prep on Sat.
Last show in May I STARTED at 18 weeks at 210 weighed in at 193 the day before the show completely depleted at 4.8%
Official prep weigh in today was 236.2 at 12.1% BF. If the math is correct I would say I’ve gained about 23lbs in 81/2 months and I’ll actually grow more as prep goes on.

The only way to possibly square this circle would be that he's regained some muscle along the way that may have been lost from apathy, age and a sudden influx of anabolics.

I’ve zero distractions this off-season plus the supplements was a game changer. Not grms wise but the supplements themselves
I work mostly from home. The rest of the day is eat, sleep and train.

Didn't you say on another thread that statistically shorter people get hurt less often when they trip and fall because they are closer to the ground? On another note Coach is really tall for his height. I'll give him that.
