over-rated maybe i saw a few of his videos training the pros and npc guys, seems to me most of what he does is just change the mechanics of how they push or pull when lifting. like lat pull downs he makes them keep their elbows more foward other then straight down...And why is it all these pros use machines thoughts

if jay said it ,it must be true. ;D ;D ;D ;D

There's only so many ways to lift weights.
Basically he is a hand-holder and gives psychological support.
Why do pros use machines?
Machines have some advantages for bodybuilding.
They are comfortable.
They are convenient.
Less thinking involved.
You can focus specifically on isolation without using energy to balance the weight. Think leg press vs. barbell squat.
Gyms are full of machines now and lots of these guys have never used free weights.
You can endorse machines for money.
-
Charles invented a position in the "industry" (rep counting, grubby hippy, "its all you" trainer).
Gullible BB's (mindless) follow along and hire him. Bizarre...
-
Charles works the angles, gets in there and tries to isolate specific parts of muscle groups etc also tweaks exercises to take stress away from knees etc (Dexter) but yeah it's overhyped for sure.....
Pro's use a lot of machines for isolation, remember they don't care about functional strength only how the muscles look. You will find that when dieted down people that have only done compound lifts will have lots of weak points in their physiques, these must be filled by specifically isolating these muscles. Machines are good at this.

buying this book and actually reading it. would be much cheaper for them in the long run. ;)

;D joints only move so many ways , it's not rocket science. now nutrition and "supplementation" now that's a whole other story. ::)

Total waste of money hiring the guy.

He's probably expensive too (more expensive than other PTs)

I doubt most of the guys who hire Glass are readers.

He must be spending all that cash on drugs. Isn't he still homeless living out of his truck in the Gold's parking lot?

Oh please do thats what we are here for ;D

The guy is a charlatan.
Clearly, these pros would look like they do even without all of his special angles and hand positioning.
What a joke.

Great book.

Charles and I have been friends since the late 1980's. Spent more than a few Thanksgiving dinners siting around the same table.
Do this; go to Golds Venice, speak to Charles, arrange a few sessions. Come to your own conclusions. It ain't that hard. Tell him Thomas Pheil sent you. He might even give you a discount.
-
There's only 1 real question you can ask about Charles though...
Is he ?? (wait for it)....
-
Is he sexual???

Conclusions about what? I mean, as a natural, how much will my physique really change due to training with him? I mean, will all his special angles and different hand positioning really make a difference?

Not to mention that you can change the angles yourself anyway without someone "coaching" you.

whoa fella better slow down, that takes years of practice and training angles are no laughing matter you could hurt yourself and others around you...

What's funny, is that Im always "inventing" new movements that I have not seen before. Do I really need to train with Charles to make up new movements? ??? ???
-
There's only 1 real question you can ask about Charles though...
Is he ?? (wait for it)....
He looks like a gloriously homeless person who is so visually creepy that if you saw him in person, you'd be blown away. His features appear to be almost perfectly hidden beneath a scrubby beard. He's a vagrant man with dark hair and filthy skin. He's masculine in terms of his facial structure and physical build. The only flaw I see is that his training style is too perfect, which sometimes translates to being pretty...a term best saved for females.
Being homeless is great. But, it isn't enough. What else does he have going on? Does he have substance? Is he intelligent? Is he interesting? Does he have a good sense of humor? Is he compassionate? Is he romantic? Is he a winner? Is he sexual?
I've met bums who were so beautiful or handsome that at first that's all you saw about them. Once they started talking and you looked deeper, you were let down because you realized their homelessness was all there was positive about them. They were just a beautiful storefront on an outhouse. You cannot judge a book by its cover.
For his sake, I hope he's got more going for himself than just how unorthodox his training methods are.
-

You're right, I better go hire Mr. Glass.

Just a few degrees change in angle and your arms can become 20"+.
Without this arcane knowledge you are doomed to 14".

This topic has been beaten to death
Let’s put it this way, Ronnie, Phil, Jay, even dexter (before glass) all won O’s and major shows without training with him, the list goes on
The irony is flex wheeler, one of the most genetically gifted trained with him but no O titles to show for, Cormier, Dillett as well

With all respect, Dan, a dozen other posters voiced similar opinions. Why blast this one guy for saying the same thing?
Frankly, Glass does not impress me as a trainer. I watched a clip of him yelling, "Come on, Flex! Contrack! Contrack!," all the while it was plain that, in spite of Flex's grunting, the latter was seemingly struggling with pussy weights with sloppy form, then stopping well before anything truly challenging.
Everyone who he "trained" were genetically blessed dudes on plenty of gear. Using some funny angles didn't improve any of them. If anything, his prize student, Flex, was far better in 1993 than he was in the late 90s. Flex had some good showings in the meantime, but if Glass was fucking Yoda, Flex et al. should have continued to improve, yes? Didn't happen. The ONLY guy he toyed with who improved was Cormier, and Chris was more known for hoisting big weights than he was doing some weird backward lat pulls on a Hammer press.

glass' gimmick is that he can shape your muscles

How much does he charge you? I can't believe he's still there. He was a fixture back in the early 1990s when I use to train there. I wonder how old he is.
-
And Gunter I believe
Yes, Gunter came in at his absolute best working with Glass. He never achieved that level again and was robbed that year at the 2002 Olympia.

So, he never achieved that level again but was still working with glass?
-
His tips and tricks and different angles are useless - Athlean-X actually gives guidance based on biomechanics and correct movement and it’s all free on YouTube. Why the fuck anyone would employ Charles Glass is beyond me.

You are not working with Eryk anymore?
-
I think his bullshit can work to an extent...
It can help to mix things up, and glass's weird angles and positions do just that, especially if your a very experienced trainer that has stagnated in their routine,.. Like a lot of pro bbers would.
But you would probably want to switch back to conventional style training after a month or two imo.
-
Why anyone would pay this garbage bag for advices is beyond reason. I suppose it's just another method of massaging one's ego. You might as well just give your money to democRats.

Changing the angles can work but why pay someone else for the advice? Just do it yourself.

Yes, that is true! Charles prepped him for the show. I was at the Mr.Olympia that year as well and Günter had the crowd behind him. He should have placed at least in the top three.

I'm guessing Charles offers more than suggesting changes in hand positioning.
Many elite-level trainers offer customized input on:
Improving lagging body parts,
Developing and maintaining symmetry,
Nutrition,
P.E.D. use and sources,
Posing,
etc.
I'm not saying he's worth it; I'm not saying he's not.
But he's definitely more than the the average LA Fitness "trainer" who stands next to you and counts while you do your shitty reps.

do we have a gunther thread up? god damn

And Gunter I believe
Touche! :)
Of course, I wonder what else Gunter did differently in 2002 ;) Sitting sideways and doing one-legged hack squats while a grubby-lookin' Rastafarian looks on, occasionally offering gems of wisdom like "contrack!" or "do another rep" just doesn't seem as magical as FLEX magazine made it sound :D
On the other hand, if people want a professional babysitter and are so eager to pay Charles for that, they will probably get a somewhat better workout than on their own, and if he looks like a bum, he's a bum laughing his ass off when he goes to the bank.

Kids, pop in to Golds Venice. Grab a session with CG. Same price as a few vials of Test and some protein powder. You might learn something you don't already know. Even better, you might learn something you think you already knew. It could happen.
Give Charles my name. Send me a postcard when you're famous.

In Northern California... A low of $40 to a high of $80. 10ml. 250mg per ml. Seems the going rate. Cyp, Enan, Prop, all the same price.

Round it out to $50 and I consider "a few" as three, plus protein: 150+30.
If you can get someone of that caliber for $200 that's a steal. But I imagine, as Coach implied, the price schedule varies widely. I'm sure a lot comes in packages. Like a three-month prep pack or bulk package (like an actor having to put on muscle fast) as well as slimming programs. I imagine the big money is with celebs since they don't have to pay and it's covered by the studio. One trainer I know, who had his own personal gym about the size to two typical garages train a "B" celeb for 3 months and got 15 grand. Pennies for the studio nice for spending barely two hours a day, five days a week.
-
For decades it has been all about the drugs and their protocol.
"Guru" and "trainer" are just code for supplier/pusher. He's only there to give them their fits.
In an interview with [I believe] RX Muscle, Dennis James said that he doesn't just give the training program or diet [the sundae], but he always gives the "cherry on top" [which I, and some others online] assumed to mean that he is a hookup for the actual gear.
I think that was in an interview where he said he would charge $5,000 to do someone's diet. It would have been someone at a high level, and the implication was that the five grand covers the gear required for that contest as well - which could presumably run a few grand just for the gear over the course of the 12 week contest prep/diet.
So yeah, you have a point...unfortunately. But, it is what it is, and I think most of us who follow the sport the industry have come to accept that. :-\
-
I am. He does my diets and I do my own supplements protocols
Is Eryk turning 50 this year? Doesn't he look under 30? Lol.
Ron banned URLs to my website Bodybuilding Pro, so that it shows up as www.bodybuildingpro.com, unfortunately. I was stupid to have spammed it so much before, so I deserved that. But here is a link to Eryk's training DVD from my website. I can't believe he was 35 here:
http://209.29.131.27/erykbuitakingcareofbuinessdvdreview.html
I normally took screen captures from each DVD, but noticed that I didn't for that DVD! So I have attached a photo below. I was 24 when Eryk was 35, and I thought he looked younger than I did! They say "Black don't crack" [for example, I don't think Goodrum has aged at all since I first met him online in 2004], but it seems to be true for Asians too - or at least for Eryk in particular!
Joe - I noticed in my review that Eryk squatted 605 for three reps close to contest time. He was also a pretty light bodybuilder.
Eryk is older now, but does he still have a great squat like that, or did he get any injuries over years of going so heavy? I must say, 605x3 is pretty good, especially for someone I assume would be a 212 class competitor, and so close to contest time. I don't recall his form being bad either, so I'm assuming he went to parallel.
The attached photo of Eryk was when he was 35, or possibly even a bit older. Great aging Asian genetics!
[FYI - to Ron or anyone else...I have migrated everything to YouTube, so I don't run my website commercially anymore. It's strictly an archive of old bodybuilding reviews I've written]

I always liked Charles Glass`s ideas.
If you`ve been training for decades you know how redundant it can get at times.......with a guy like Charles tweaking things it can help to revitalize your enthusiasm even if it`s only in your mind or attitude towards your workouts.
I like some of his ideas.................sh oot me later right now I need my coffee !!
