DUNE (2020 Film)
Are any GetBiggers interested in this?
Hollywood is an utter train wreck nowadays, but I have a cautious optimism about this.

Dune (1965) - A novel by Frank Herbert
Set in the distant future amidst a feudal interstellar society in which various noble houses control planetary fiefs, Dune tells the story of young Paul Atreides, whose family accepts the stewardship of the planet Arrakis. While the planet is an inhospitable and sparsely populated desert wasteland, it is the only source of melange, or "the spice", a drug that extends life and enhances mental abilities. Melange is also necessary for space navigation, which requires a kind of multidimensional awareness and foresight that only the drug provides. As melange can only be produced on Arrakis, control of the planet is thus a coveted and dangerous undertaking. The story explores the multi-layered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, as the factions of the empire confront each other in a struggle for the control of Arrakis and its spice.

DUNE (2020)
Overall
Dune is an upcoming 2020 epic science fiction film based on the legendary 1965 science-fiction novel by Frank Herbert.
It will be directed by Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners/Sicaro/Arrival/Blade Runner 2049) with a screenplay by Eric Roth, Jon Spaihts and Villeneuve. Mr. Villeneuve said in March 2018 that he planned to adapt the novel into two films. It is an international co-production of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Hungary, and it will cover roughly the first half of the book. The film stars an ensemble cast and is scheduled to be released in the United States in IMAX and 3D on December 18, 2020, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Cast
Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, the scion of House Atreides
Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Paul's Bene Gesserit mother and concubine to Duke Leto
Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, a nobleman newly bestowed with the stewardship of the dangerous planet Arrakis, source of the spice
Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, weapons master of House Atreides and Paul's mentor
Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, sworn enemy to Leto and former steward of Arrakis
Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban, the brutish nephew of Baron Harkonnen
Zendaya as Chani, Fremen daughter of Imperial Planetologist Liet-Kynes and Paul's love interest
David Dastmalchian as Piter De Vries, a twisted Mentat loyal to the Baron
Charlotte Rampling as Gaius Helen Mohiam, a Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother and the Emperor's Truthsayer
Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, swordmaster of House Atreides
Javier Bardem as Stilgar, leader of the Fremen tribe at Sietch Tabr
Chang Chen as Dr. Wellington Yueh, a Suk doctor in the employ of the Atreides family
Premise
In the far future of humanity, Duke Leto Atreides accepts stewardship of the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, "the spice", a drug which extends human life, provides superhuman levels of thought, and makes foldspace travel possible. Though Leto knows the opportunity is an intricate trap set by his enemies, the Harkonnens, he takes his Bene Gesserit concubine Lady Jessica, young son and heir Paul, and most trusted advisers to Arrakis, also known as Dune. Leto takes control of the spice mining operation, which is made perilous by the presence of giant sandworms. A bitter betrayal leads Paul and Jessica to the Fremen, natives of Arrakis who live in the deep desert.
So it looks like the first film will end after the attack on Arrakis by House Harkonnen.
Interesting.

The 1984 David Lynch Dune film is really big in the online fanedit world.
Fans who go around re-editing movies by removing scenes, adding in deleted scenes from home releases, changing sequences, modifying special effects, etc.
They are many different ones that have been made from the 1984 film.
I've personally viewed like five of them.
Then there was the Sy-Fy Channel one from back in 2000. It was pretty good... and more accurate to the book than Lynch's 1984 film.
Lynch does not acknowledge the official longer version that had a cable television and DVD release.
He had his name taken off of it.
It was replaced with the non-existing Alan Smithee. ;D

I first came across Frank Herbert’s novel when I was about 12 years old.
I remember taking it out at my local library.
Encountered it again in high school.
One English teacher I had really loved it. He assigned it to us along with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy that year. He was also big into Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey.
I think that year we read Lord of the Flies as well.
Along with Star Wars and Star Trek, Herbert’s novel got me reading more science fiction.
I remember going to Philip K. Dick because of Blade Runner (“Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”) and Total Recall (“We Can Remember It for You Wholesale”) along with staples like H.G. Wells, Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke.
-
One of the few re-boots that will likely turn out on par with the original.
-
Apparently Liet Kynes could be gender and race swapped to be a black woman. A theory is that she and Stilgar could be the parents of Chani in this film version.
Lady Jessica is also rumoured to have a bigger role as well as the Bene Gesserit (even though they do play a big role in later books).

How many times can they re-make this movie?

This looks a lot like the set from "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade".
As for "DUNE". The old movie sucked big time. I'm not certain I can sit through another rendering of that tome.
-
But will it be as good as Children Of The Hunt (2009)?

They used that location in Mortal Kombat 2 i think :D
But yes, i think Indiana used it first

The original Dune was 1984 and I was around 12 years old at the time. Not really impressed, though interestig story line. (again I was 12, the only time I watchred it). Hope the new one (2020) is not all special effects and keeping to the original story.
Best TV scifi series so far, Battlestar Galactica (2005) with Edward James Olmos. No doubt there. The original 1978 version with Lorne Green was OK but more pop scifi, just my view. Watched the reruns.
Prometheus, and the follow up , both excellent scifi movies.

So in Hollywood 2020; I expect the male messiah will be cucked and the women in the film will be the real leaders and heroes. the bad guy will have an orange skin tone and be xenophobic. We'll have obligatory gay kissing scenes and in the end the proletariat will win ensuring free spice for everyone and no border controls on Arrakas.
Thanks China money and ideology!

Well....
Harkonnens are actually orange and xenophobic! :D :D
Paul Atreides mother and sister are very powerful women.
Duke Harkonnen was gay and had the hots for his nephew (just like Primemucus)

The Bene Gesserit are the 'real' leaders in terms of orchestrating and manipulating things behind the scenes, but their plans don't always work out the way they want them to....
And the Baron Harkonnen is homosexual and likes slave boys.

haha...good points. So Hollywood would have to make everyone straight, white and nationalistic just to stay ahead of the 'woke' curve!

It does seem that the character's gender has been changed from male to female.
The rumor is that actress Sharon Duncan-Brewster is playing Kynes.
There is some anger from the fan base.
Lady Jessica is actually quite prominent/important in the novel, so I'm not too worried about that.
But yeah, hoping for no ridiculous "woke" bullshit.

It's supposed to hold to the book, but there are already some differences.

Can't agree. Hated that show. Overrated beyond belief. Love the original. Definitely pop Sci-Fi, but classic.
Besides, best TV Sci-Fi series is the Original Star Trek. ;)
Prometheus, and the follow up , both excellent scifi movies.
Again, can't agree.
I was so hyped for Prometheus. Ridley Scott coming back to science-fiction. The online marketing campaign was legend. The whole thing screamed greatness.
Then the movie came.
A terrible letdown. A mediocre film at best.
Alien: Covenant is even worse. A garbage film.
The true sadness came from realizing that Ridley Scott had lost it.
-
I hope they add a whole new planet called "Wokeia" or "Urbania" or "Melonia" inhabitated entirely with Black people.
The Dindee Alliance.
-
I hope they don't go crazy.
The Liet Kynes thing is already annoying.

There was no shortage of major female characters, Lady Jessica, Irulan, Chani, and the entire Bene Gesserit.
-
Agreed.
And I think the reason for the small blowback.
If there's one book that already has a number of strong, interesting female characters it is Dune.
There was really no need for this.

No matter what, visually, especially with Villeneuve's excellent use of full-scale props, miniatures and practical effects with subtle use of CGI blending in, it should look amazing.

They can't miss. The original was so disjointed and cornball, anything they do now will shine.

Villeneuve has also updated Dr. Liet Kynes, the leading ecologist on Arrakis and an independent power broker amid the various warring factions. Although always depicted as a white man, the character is now played by Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Rogue One), a black woman. “What Denis had stated to me was there was a lack of female characters in his cast, and he had always been very feminist, pro-women, and wanted to write the role for a woman,” Duncan-Brewster says.
Dear God. ::)
One has to ask...
Did he ever even read the book? ???
“This human being manages to basically keep the peace amongst many people. Women are very good at that, so why can’t Kynes be a woman? Why shouldn’t Kynes be a woman?” Duncan-Brewster says.
Simple, lady.
It wasn't written that way. :P

I don't believe it was Villeneuve's idea to do this. It seems like the studio wanted another female character.
I think this was a compromise he had to make in order to have otherwise full creative control of the film.

Blade runner 2049 was a decent effort though far from perfect. Still good to see some attempts at legit sci fi coming out better than the trash that normally rolls out of hollyweird. Eg transformers.

He claims that he has.
-
"This of course was done deliberately for that purpose … to turn … it’s a turning point of the whole book, but … a pivot, you might say … and the very fact that Kynes, who is the Western man, in my original construction of the book, sees all of these things happening to him as mechanical things doesn’t subtract from the fact that he is still a part of this system because it is observing him. He’s lived out of rhythm with it and he got in the through of the wave and it tumbled on him.”

Saw it last night on HBOmax.
Much better seeing new movies at home.
Visually, the movie is great. Acting was scarce in that a lot more was devoted to action scenes versus acting. Not a bad part 1 to the series, look forward to part 2. Longer than it needed to be, but it didn't drag.
Main actors were kids. Probably won't be the best movie of the year, but I'm into dystopian type movies that take place in futuristic settings, so I'm cool with it.
